The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

Someone who works for Lucasfilm will have a plan and have the masters for the original OT they had to get before adding additional effects to them

That wasn't how it worked. They only scanned the scenes they were redoing for the SEs, at first. Those new scenes were then output to film and cut into the original negative - so it has been recut (or 'conformed') to the SE standard.

It could be undone, but that doesn't seem likely. If we're ever to get an unmolested HD copy of the film someone will have to find a print in good condition and telecine it privately. But I imagine that'd be expensive, and we still wouldn't have the colour-correction etc etc. And the sort of people who do that sort of thing tend to enjoy keeping the results in a vault, but telling people about it... :lol

George Lucas didnt rape my childhood, he just took something that was very special to me when I was young, and made it uninteresting!

I know this has all been said, ad nauseum; but I am tired of seeing the "latest" version of Star Wars (Fill in episode number), and boxed sets that purport to be the definitive version, etc. Lucas knows that many collectors will buy anything he puts out just to be able to open the door to their mother's basement and gloat to the world that they have the best Star Wars collection in the universe. Pathetic, really. I will be NOT buying this one.

Tinker with the PT.

Leave the OT ALONE!!!!

The cliP of Vader sayin NO in Rotj... I'm finally over it. That scene was awesome. Vader may wear a mask but it was obvious what he was thinking. That scene was perfect as is....

Dear god this is LAME!!!!

So yeah.

I had a look at that petition. It's too curt, too hostile in tone. You don't ask for a favour by saying 'you have a duty to.. etc.' He'll screw it into a ball and throw it in the bin for sure.

OK, if this has been said, fine.

If not here it is, and this is from an insanity level SW fan:

I didn't invent Star Wars. I love Star Wars. George Lucas, who invented it can do what he wants to do with it, up to and including cut it to ribbons.

Do I have to like it? No.

Will I devote an instant of my time on this earth to bemoaning this fact more than for a few minutes? No.

I have the old ones and the new ones. I'll probably get the new one too, just to see the extras. If that makes me a pig eyed philistine.....OK, I can live with that. I've been called worse.

I will not tell anyone not to vent their rage (though I agree with the sentiment that the use of Rape and Nazi in relation to a kids movie is abjectly stomach turning, ignorant and lacking in creativity and/or sensitivity) about the changes. Do it. Go on.

But think of this:

For every moment you sacrifice in rage over a movie/book/work of art evolving, you are giving up time in your own life to create, love or change your actual circumstances for the better. That choice is yours.

What matters to me is what I get out of it, and what I got out of it till the SEs in 97 is gone now.

First, It is not gone. :rolleyes You can still watch the OT in its original form. I don't think even GL has the stroke to collect and torch every copy of the OT ever made.

And what YOU get out of it? What about what the person who invented it gets out of it? Hmmm..... Imagine if you wrote, directed, sweat and invested all of yourself to create something, how would you feel if I an audience member told you that you could never revise it, change it or do anything to it because it alters what I get out of it? You would be annoyed. Bottom line.

Picasso painted over his own work because he didn't like it enough. It was his business, not ours.

Artists do not exist to please. They inform, they create and hope that others appreciate it, but don't lose a lot of sleep if others don't.

I acknowledge George Lucas right to tinker with his property and to sell copies of his modified editions. That does not mean that I like what he has done. George Lucas is a git, but he a right to be a git as long as he does not harm anybody.

What I think should be illegal is to sell a new edition of a movie without labeling it as a new edition. The 2004 box set was labeled as the "Special Edition". In my opinion, that should have been illegal -- because it was false advertising. It was not the "Special Edition" that we saw in theatres back in 1997 -- it contained yet another edition with more stuff done to it.
The same thing applies now in 2011: The "Original Trilogy" BluRay set contains neither the original trilogy nor the "Special Edition" nor the 2004 edition: it contains yet another edition and Lucasfilm should be legally required to label it as such on the packaging, on the discs and on the inserts.
If Lucasfilm misleads only one person (who isn't a total nerd like me who keeps up with the news) into believing that the BluRay discs contain the old Star Wars movies and that person buys the discs, then harm has been done. There is a big chance that a lot of people will do so.

Lucasfilm's deception and attitude is actually what angers me the most about the changes. I was not this riled up back in 1997, because then the changes were wildly advertised and very much expected. I was disappointed at the low quality of them, yes, but not angry.

Illegal? Don't we have enough frivilous laws on the books? :rolleyes

Special Edition could mean anything when thrown on a DVD - bonus features, HD, anything.

Yeah, in it's glorious non-anamorphic 2.0 audio presentation using a lackluster laser disc masters.

Yeah, but imagine what his earlier work would have looked like if we could see what he painted over. Imagine what it could have told us. Art is more than just the artist's vision. Who wouldn't want to see that? One special Bonus Feature I love to look at is Stanley Kubrick's storyboards for Spartacus. One of the most visionary directors of all time, and he couldn't draw a straight line to save his life. But you know, I love looking at it. Reminds me that even the best artists aren't good at everything, but they're not afraid to show it off.

Still, I guess like Picasso, there won't be a true version of Star Wars...... until Lucas is dead. That's a sad point to look forward to.

I'm all for intelligent / healthy argumentative discourse, but this thread makes me laugh. I guess I fall into the group of a-holes that doesn't really care. I have the originals on VHS, I have the Special Editions, I have the new DVDs, and I'll buy the Blu-ray just to enjoy the sharper picture and for the fun of identifying the changes. If for some reason I am incredibly butt hurt about what was done to these films on Blu-ray, then I'll just pop in the originals. Not a big deal. I love Star Wars, and to me it's a masterpiece, but I can't have the reaction that some do that it's like someone's changing the US Constitution. It's a movie!! Contrary to what we believe, it's George Lucas' film, and he can do what he wants with it.

The only thing that peeves me would be the absence of the original, uncut/unaltered movies added to the Blu-ray. No excuse for not including those, but that won't stop me from buying it. I only want those for prosperity though, to pass along to my kids so they can see it how I saw it.

To be honest, I don't think I ever want to watch the original / unedited VHS versions again. The same reason I don't want to revisit black and white TV.

All you freaks calling for a boycott... You can do what ever you want....

My take? I have all versions. Grew up with them all too... from a7 year old at the first release of SW, to skipping school to see ESB... I own the originals, as I'm sure you all do too.

Good for you.

But, you know what? I love ALL the additions. I love all the bad and the good.

Ya see, I'm growing with the changes. I've see children's eye light up with the prequels. They are the new generation.

And I cannot WAIT to take these Blu-Rays home to introduce them to the OT, with ALL THE CHANGES.

Sorry to burst a billion bubbles, but.... SW grows. The new fans are as young as we were back then. They deserve the changes and will (hopefully) eat them up to go along with the prequels ;)

It does grow indeed. Good Point!
