The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

I still haven't purchased the Blu-rays and won't till I get the originals.

Me neither. I have had zero interest in SW since 2008.

But like many, I would be willing to shell out some cash one last time if they release "Star Wars" (not Ep.4, not "A New Hope"; the good old, unaltered '77 Star Wars) on bluray. And the first film is all I want.

I'm waiting for Disney to release the "Archival" edition of the OT as well, but until then I'll say Fan edit/restorations are the best way to see the OOT on an HD screen. They are real , and so is Santa ;)!
Should this still be the Boycott Thread? :lol

I enjoy fan edits.

Ok. And....so what? I mean, why are you defending them? Do you think they need defending? You like 'em. Someone else doesn't. And....that's about the end of it, no? Instead, you seem to be riding to the defense of fan edits in general, as if their honor has been besmirched and it's up to you to restore it. I don't get that.

I mean, basically, someone else said "Meh. Fan edits. Don't care," to which you responded with "Hey! Don't you insult fan edits! Fan edits are great!" When I say "Where's your dog in this fight," what I'm asking is "Why are you defending something you dig just because someone else doesn't dig it?" Who cares if he doesn't like fan edits? What's it matter to you?

As far as I can gather, he has undone a lot of damage.

- No Greedo shooting at Han.
- No Jabba the Hutt scene.
- No dumb Mos Eisley antics.
- No censorship.
- No feature length blue filter. (That's a pretty big one)
- No green lightsaber.
- Chewbacca gets a medal.

That's nice. He's also doing other stuff like adding this and that. I mean, the way I see it, he's doing the same thing as Lucas, just getting rid of certain changes while adding others. It really IS just another fan edit. It's one fan's opinion of "Look. I made it better" instead of "Look. I made it what it was." For those of us who want it to be "what it was," SOME of what he does is terrific. The rest, though, is just more screwing with something that didn't need screwing with. It's interesting to see what someone else thinks is "better," but in the end, I and others who dismiss fan edits -- because we want the originals back -- just don't really care. It's a fan edit. E for effort. But gimme the originals.

I guess I'm considered part of the problem. I bought the blurays and watch them. I hate the changes, especially the musical scene in ROTJ, but the unaltered DVDs that came in that boxes set just look so bad on a 60" TV.
I'd rather look at all the stuff I do like in 1080p and suffer through the stuff I don't like.

I actually LOVE what they did with Bespin in ESB.

For me, I have two main issues with the blu-rays.

1.) They have all the extra crap from the SEs, which I don't like. It's interesting to see the revised deleted scenes, but honestly, I'm sick of added CGI and extraneous scenes that really don't improve the film. I want it back the way it was, and every time I see the extended Mos Eisley entrance, or the Jabba scene where they repeat half of the exchange between Han and Greedo, and ********* Greedo getting off a shot, it diminishes my enjoyment of the film. I actually don't LIKE the SEs, and I'm not really able to "settle" anymore for them. I'm more able to "settle" for the low-res version, ugly though it is on my 55".

2.) Even if the SE stuff was removed, there's still a bunch of technical flaws. Bad color timing, lousy "restoration" work like sabre coloring being inconsistent, etc. On the '04/'06 DVDs, flipped sound channels for the rear in some cases. It's just really shoddy technical work, and it's embarrassing. Plus, LucasFilm repeatedly said "No, that's how it was supposed to be" which is total BS (particularly when they later changed it). It pisses me off that Lucas can't admit when he's WRONG, and when it comes to this technical stuff, he's WRONG. His guys did a crap job, and he should bloody well own up to it instead of repeatedly fleecing consumers. Lowry Digital, which did the restorations, has done some FANTASTIC work in the past, so it's likely not their fault, but rather that it was a rush job or that LucasFilm took 'em back and messed with them themselves.

In this case, "half a loaf" is no good because the half I have is moldy and is flavored weirdly with additives I really don't like the taste of. So, yeah, technically it's bread, but not any kind I'd want to eat. Why should I pay for it?

Well said:thumbsup, I have high hopes that Disney will see the wisdom ($$$) in doing a proper restoration. GL's ego seems to have gotten in the way of this for a long time:unsure
Now this thread has me hungry for non-moldy bread!:lol I'm going to watch the Original ROTJ while I finish my "Advacaned action saber" :lol:cool:devil

There's a difference between saying "I don't like fan edits" and "It's just a fan edit". One is a personal preference, while the other is a dismissive generalization. Garlic's posts seems to be quite insistent on the latter since he's obviously making the point to everyone else.

Too Much Garlic said:
- I'll just restate my point: just another fan-edit. Sorry, but that's all it'll ever be.
- it's just another fan-edit. And nothing anyone say will change that fact.

What I find funny about these posts is that Garlic thinks he's telling us something we don't already know or have already accepted. Yeah, they're films edited by fans and they're not sanctioned by the studios that made the originals. That's the whole point. And as for your "as if their honor has been besmirched", well...

Too Much Garlic said:
- Fan edits are further bastardization of the original source material

That's why I defend fan edits Solo, because vague comments like that only serve to give fan edits a negative reputation in general. Just because they're not the original doesn't mean they can't be good, worse or in some cases better!

Ok, but again, so what?

I mean, let's say TMG or myself or anyone else here says "Fan edits suck." Categorical dismissal of the entire body of work of fan edits. Across the board.

Why do you care?

Let me try to explain my confusion here. As far as I know, you don't actually MAKE fan edits, and you are not, yourself, Adywan. You just happen to like 'em. Again, that's as far as I know. So, other than liking the stuff, I don't see what the personal connection is to fan edits.

Yet you seem to take personal offense to the point where you feel compelled to defend against the attack on fan edits. Why? DO you make fan edits, and we're just not aware of it? ARE you actually Adywan? Did you contribute to making these things? Or are you basically just a fan of them?

I guess here's what I don't get: Why is one's fandom about a particular thing also a personal identification with that thing, to the point where an attack on the thing itself is an attack on one's person?

Like, I know you're an Aliens fan. If I said "Bah. Those movies are crap. Total crap," would you feel personally attacked? Would you feel the need to get in my face about how they aren't crap and it's rude of me to dismiss them or whatever? I don't actually think they're crap, of course, but I'm curious here. Is the attack on the subject of your fandom an attack on you?

If it isn't, then why are you getting worked up about it? Why bother getting into it with TMG at all? Why spend the time or energy? If you haven't been personally attacked, are you just kinda in the mood to have an argument? If not...then why not simply dismiss TMG's dismissal yourself and say to yourself "Whatever. Pearls before swine."

I see stuff on here not infrequently that I disagree with, and sometimes that I want to fire off a knee-jerk response to, but I also realize -- after taking a beat -- that it's just someone's opinion, and isn't an attack on me merely because I happen to like whatever they happen to dislike. Ergo, there's no point in my defending the thing they dislike JUST because I like it. I didn't make it, and other than my fandom, I have no personal connection to it. Thus, an attack on it isn't an attack on me, and therefore doesn't warrant a vehement defense on my part. They dislike it. I like it. And life goes on.

So, I say again: where is your dog in this fight?

I told you why I care. I like fan edits. Isn't it human nature to defend what you like?

I like fan edits.
Good for you. I find them mildly amusing, but most of the time, rather boring. If I want to watch Star Wars I'll watch Lucas' original versions, as close as they have been made available on DVD.

You get in my face without actually reading what I commented on. Adywan's cuts are just like any other fan edit: it's a fan edit. That's all I said. I find it funny someone gets so worked up about it and heralds it as the second coming above all other fan edits. It's isn't.

It's. just. another. fan. edit.

Please read that carefully. IT IS NOT A DISMISSAL of fan edits - THAT is the meaning that you imbue it with. It is a very simple statement that they are simply, just another fan edit. One, in my eyes is not better than the other. Your problem for putting more into that statement than there is. You like fan edits. Good for you. Enjoy them.

Guess we have a different opinion on what is mildly amusing then.
:lol:lol:lolThis is a monty python sketch!:lol:lol:lol personally I find the word bastardization more than mildly amusing :)!
I wish I knew how to do a screen grab but ......hey where did Hayden go? :confused:lol:popcorn
