The Official Boycott Star Wars Bluray thread

Oh yeah, you guys were going to boycott the Blu-ray edition unless George releases the original editions on Blu-ray.

So, how did that work out for you guys ?

Worked out great actually. I bought them for cheap, never opened them, turned around and sold them for a profit!

Lucas's depression with the finished film - especially Gil Taylor's lighting ( Kurtz and Taylor practically fought on set over this)

I'll have to re-read that book. I don't remember much talk about him not being happy with the lighting. I wonder what the problem was, it looks good to me.

I like the additional ties. I don't think the Imperial March fits. I've never been a big fan of that piece of music.

Still a proud member of this club, and holding strong!

If I can just add that the Empire Strikes Back Revisited is on schedule for release this year. Adywan's donation drive is almost done and he says his work on the battle of Hoth is ready for showcasing.

There's nothing fantastic about the Adywan cut. It's just another fan-edit and in the same vein as the SE's - adding unnecessary stuff. And if I had to choose, I'd choose the SE's!

I just read that and laughed out loud. Sorry, but it's not "just another fan edit" as it's leaps and bounds above any other fan edit I've ever seen and it is 1000x more enjoyable than the SE as well.

Not many changes there. It's going to be hard to make too many changes in this one.

You know someone is doing a good job when the changes are barely noticeable. Few things you should note in this clip.

- Color timing. The film is a LOT LESS blue looking.
- New Imperial walker approach, including an entirely redone binocular view.
- The rebel officer who says "Echo Station, 3TA. We've spotted Imperial Walkers." has had his mouth adjusted to look like he's actually saying those words, and is given a few extra frames to finish his line.
- During the shot of the Snow Speeders taking off, large red markings on the front and side of the speeders have been added.
- The only seen once "red glow" from the lead AT-AT's cockpit has been re-colored to match subsequent shots.
- New reveal shot of the Snow Speeders showing a more consistent number of speeders to match the unchanged fly over shot.
- More Snowspeeder cockpit readout details.
- NO SNOWSPEEDER COCKPIT TRANSPARENCY! This is one flub that the Special Editions stated in detail that they corrected, but didn't. Even on the BluRays.
- Wicked cool addition of an AT-ST trying to shoot down two Snowspeeders.
- The AT-AT seen through the window when Luke says "Alright, stand by Dack" has been removed.

Wow!

Just watched the ESB:R Hoth battle.

Very cool, I like the addition of the AT-STs.

I think all the additions really enhance the scene without detracting from the original intent too much. A lot of thoughtful finishing touches have been added.

Even though i have not seen the whole film, I think so far this is much better than his ANH:R effort.

Did he have to add an AT-ST to every scene?

Well, when you establish that the AT-STs are walking in formation with the AT-ATs, you have to stick with continuity. It's kind of like saying "Does Luke have to have a bruise on his head in every scene?".

AS much as I appreciate Andywan's work it's the original or nothing for me. Even with all it's flaws. They add to the piece IMO.

And I agree to, but it's always fun to watch something familiar through the perspective of someone else. I think each person's rendition of Star Wars adds a little something to the piece that's different from all the others. The Phantom Edit in trying to make the film a more serious piece, the GrindHouse presentation of the original trilogy to look more worn and torn and even editing the entire saga to start with Episode 4 and 5, flashback to 1, 2, 3 and ending it with 6. I don't look at these fan edits as versions that should compete with the original, but just as entertainment to see what their work adds to the final product.

Even Peter Jackson talks openly about fan edits in his Lord of the Rings commentary, even saying how if anyone wanted to edit all three movies into one big movie, the ending credits to the Extended Edition of Return of the King would best fit that criteria.

This. The Adywan stuff is a nice little curio, the same way Lucas' various iterations of the SEs are.

I want the originals. Cleaned up and restored, but the originals nonetheless. You want to clean off screen grit, fine. You want to adjust the color timing so it doesn't look like Pee Wee's Playhouse (I'm looking at YOU, 2004 editions...), fine and dandy. I'm ok with removing matte lines, although even that I could go either way on, because it's a showcase of what was capable in 1977, which I suppose applies to any of the various effects "clean-up" work.

What I really want is a restored, high-resolution transfer of the films in the version with which I grew up. I don't need extra this or that.
