The Map - Star Wars Ahsoka

I kinda want to make one of these from scratch. I might try taking the ratchet mechanism out of a cheap wrench and integrating it under each lobe. Or 3D printing a similar mechanism. That way you get the same satisfying sound and tactile feedback that you hear when Sabine is turning the pieces of the map.

It doesn't "need" the Megaminx puzzle functionality- you only really need the 3 "wheels" for the sides of the triangle to rotate- similar to how the one on thingiverse is set up. I'm sure purists will want to build it on top of the puzzle- but if you're just looking for a cool prop that "works" it seems like it would pretty easy to make.

The engraving artwork on the other hand... that's a different story altogether....

Lol that could be next, never know
It's called a holocron!
Apparently it’s called a Skewb.

I can’t tell if that’s a physical prop or a 3d render. If it’s a render then it looks very real.
It's a render :)
I'm still refining the pattern. When that's done I can create the separate plates. The problem is that there are 62 pieces for the puzzle to be fully functional plus the risk that it gets undone and I will never manage to get it right again! Haha. So I'm now thinking of making it out of 12 pieces and only one or two parts rotating. Hardly any reason to use the megaminx after all. I'm not sure yet. What do you think? What would you do?

Well I wasn’t quick enough, so I’m waiting for the restock, my plan is to take it apart and then sculpt each scale with green stuff putty. I’m hoping to make the try point and pips in metal.

Then I will have to see if parts can be glued together before they are put back together, I suspect not so I’ll probably have to glue as o go, I only want the 3-4 faces to rotate. I’d be worried of getting it mixed up and never getting it back in the right place too.

If they don’t restock then I’ll just pick up an 8cm spree and do a static one.

I’m thinking of making a display base inspired by the stone pillar it’s placed on. If there is space I’ll add a green flicker led to the base.
