The Mandalorian (TV series)

Meanwhile me without a Twitter account and having checked out from The Mandolin and SW...

Yet if the story was truly great it would have transcended all those problems. Look at ANH. By all accounts it should have never seen the light of day.

Often some of the most successful movies have the odds stacked against them. Look at JAWS. I'm not suggesting Solo is the worst film, just that the factors you listed would have made little difference if the story was airtight.
Honestly, i don't think so. People made up their minds way ahead of time. That flick had a lot of missteps along the way. There comes a point where you dig yourself too big a hole to get out of. I think setting out to make it a comedy was a bad decision that doomed the whole thing. It's not that you couldn't set a comedy in the SWU, but not for Han's supposed origin story. Add a casting choice that no one agreed with and the folks at ILM not getting that a comedy would't work for this until way too late in the game and there you go.

I went in not expecting a whole lot and i enjoyed it. I caught spot bits of the original comedy version and was glad they didn't go that route. I never really could see alden as han, though.

I'm not denying those factors played a part but the idea of Han Solo needing an origin story felt unnecessary from the outset. It added nothing to the character other than a checklist to get to what we already knew of him in ANH so by its own premise it was nothing more than filler. There's nothing inherently wrong with filler, it just lacks any substance.

Even when it was announced as going into production I think most fans reacted with a resounding , meh. It was constantly referred to as the movie no one asked for. Which means the concept of an origin story for this character wasn't needed. Add in all the factors you mentioned and it was almost guaranteed to fail.

I wasn't speaking directly to Gina's firing, but to the general mindset, and the current trend.

The recent acceleration/expansion of "cancel culture" is extremely dangerous. And the problem in this specific case may not ultimately lie with Disney, but with the fans calling for her firing. Ironically, that's exactly what Gina was pointing out in the post in question.
If they wanted her fired , they were not fans they were just trolls.

Regardless of how you feel, I can understand Disney trying to protect their brand from controversy. It is all because of Twitter outrage. They "fired" James Gunn for Twitter outrage so we shouldn't be surprised.

Bingo. This is just Disney protecting their brand, which they have every reason and right to do. It's the smart business move here.

The question now becomes what do they do with her character, ie. How do they write her off the show?

Kill her off? A throw away line about how she's living out her life on some nowhere system?

My guess is that they will write off the character in a pretty minimal way. I don’t think we’ll see any sort of emotional death scene, as the logistics of it wouldn’t really work.

After that, I wonder if there will be a new character introduced who fits pretty much the same mold- some sort of tough ex-Rebel woman. That would be a way to continue with whatever role Dune was supposed to have, without having to figure out casting someone new.

If they kill her character there would be outrage. If they recast her (will never happen) that will create outrage. I think the smart thing for Disney to do is to simply make her character irrelevant to the story and move on casually as possible as if nothing ever happened. It is just like the time I saw "City of Angels" on Broadway when, during a scene transition, a prop pot fell off the moving kitchen set and clattered into the next scene. The actor simply walked up to the pot and flung it deftly stage left and proceeded to give his line.

There won't be outrage because there's no reason to do any of that, nor is there any reason to "fire" Bill Burr. These characters are side characters in a TV show that pop up for a handful of episodes and then leave. There's literally no reason for them to appear again other than fan service.

The silver lining behind all of this is that the show can't rely on shoehorning Cara Dune appearances in just to goose fan interest. Instead, they'll be able to focus on new experiences and other characters who actually have a reason to be there aside from "people seemed to like your episode, so we brought you back!"

Understood what Gina was referring to, but it was ultimately completely simplistic and historically ignorant.

A person who does publicly post making the same point multiple times, but with genuine clarity and incisive insight is Tim Kennedy. Gina did it quite clumsily unfortunately.

As an aside, I do see a lot of well known people in the world decry people trying to "cancel" them, without the merest hint of irony that they are on tv saying it. That irks me, as it reduces the impact those who are genuinely being hounded etc, should be making by pointing it out.

I hate that nonsense. "I'VE BEEN CANCELED!!!" wails the person on a national television broadcast. "WHAT ABOUT FREE SPEECH?!" cries the person banned from a private platform.

These people faced social consequences for their behavior, and there are no protections from that.

Nobody at Disney seemed to care when Pedro Pascal made a holocaust comparison.

That's because Pedro's comment was completely different.

The issue isn't simply "Hey, did you reference something about the Holocaust? YOU'RE FIRED!!!" It's the context of the message, plus her past behavior. They didn't fire her over a single tweet. I guarantee you they fired her over a whole range of content, likely about which she'd been warned.

And if you don't believe me, take a look at what else happened to her: the agency that represented her dropped her. That doesn't happen just because you said something unpopular one time. My guess is that she had a bunch of stuff lined up, but had been warned, and the agency tried to advise her to cool it, but she shot her mouth off anyway, got herself canned, and in the process cost the agency a bunch of money for not listening to them. So all their work in helping to get her the gig goes out the window just because she couldn't pour herself a piping hot mug of STFU.

This kind of stuff strikes me as highly unlikely to happen based on just a single tweet, even one like this which is....incredibly insensitive and idiotic. It makes way more sense if this was the final straw in a long pattern of behavior about which she was warned, but about which she also couldn't control herself. That, I would bet, is what gets you fired from your gig, cut from your spinoff show before it gets off the ground, and dropped by your agency.

I just realized that "lol" looks like a TIE fighter.
Was totally just thinking that.....they mention a x-wing but put a tie fighter...ha

My brother wasn't happy with her leaving the way she did, so he cancelled his Disney + account.

Some of you need to be careful. Opinions are posted now that cannot be argued without going DEEP into banable territory. Resist the temptation. Mods have proved before that they are not lying about the rules of this forum. Just because a post is still up doesn't mean they are OK with where it's going.

All I will say is that they should be treated equally like others have already mentioned. It seems like if Hollywood deems you are a "right" thinking person you can get away with saying all kinds of things (or sexually assaulting lots of women...) as it has been shown with the girl hosting that High Republic thing on starwars.com. GC's latest comment was an extreme example, but there was nothing anti-Semitic unless there's something worse than the quote I read. It seems more like they were looking for a way to get rid of her because they don't like her politics so they used this as an excuse. I just wish they would all shut up and keep their personal politics to themselves.

Again, I don't think this was about the content of a single tweet. I think this is about repeated tweets that potentially impact Disney/LFL's business, and, probably, having been warned to chill the hell out...and then ignoring that warning.

This is less about content and more about business. I don't think Hollywood really gives a damn about the politics of the talent. I think they care a great deal about not alienating their fan base, especially on a family-friendly show that's meant to hit as broad a demographic as possible.

Ask yourselves why her agency dropped her. This almost certainly isn't a one-time occurrence. This is business, and she committed the cardinal sin: she messed with the money, and likely after having already been warned.

This would be no different if, like, she kept talking about weird stuff with baby sea turtles, and Disney said "Gina....the sea turtles stuff...you gotta knock it off. It's just too weird," and she said "Screw you guys, I'm free to talk about sea turtles all I want!" Well, you are, but you are also free to find yourself another job because we told you already stop talking about the sea turtles online.

But 90% of the Disney era Star Wars is NOTHING BUT fan service. I mean in all honesty they likely won't address her character. After this last season I'm not going to bother even watching the show anymore anyway. I'm just glad I got to see it for free and saved myself a few bucks.

I find it amusing that people are canceling their Disney+ accounts over this. THIS was the final straw??? Really? As if the last 4 years of controversy coming from Lucasfilm and the deluge of mediocre/ horrendous content wasn't enough to get you to stop supporting them financially?

She should have put it in star wars terms and showed padme saying this is how liberty dies....that's where she messed up. Or she could have said ya know in star wars the palpatine convinced everyone the Jedi were the bad guys....and made a point that way.

Then again my tin foil hat conspiracy is maybe she wanted to get fired because disney gave her a bad deal and the easiest way out of a contract is to get cancelled by saying something they can't ignore.

I’m more offended by the incredibly short, sparse seasons and episodes which Wandavision is quickly proving will be the norm for any D+ show

That would make sense...except for her getting dumped by her agency, too. I kinda doubt someone intentionally sabotages themself to quite that degree.

Re: the fan service thing, yeah, to a point. I thought a bit much of it crept in to Season 2 with characters from Season 1 appearing again, but I think they've set up some really interesting stuff for S3. And the "fan service" aspect of that is, I think, pretty low-level, given that Clone Wars isn't well known by most people.

But as for people canceling their D+ accounts, I think the service was (1) wildly popular when it first launched and widely adopted, and (2) Verizon has a deal where you get, I think, a year free when you sign some contract level, so a lot of people probably had it anyway. Kinda like that U2 album everyone wound up with from Apple a few years back. My point here being that I suspect the people canceling the service probably don't use it for much of anything anyway.

I, on the other hand, would not cancel the service given that my kid LOVES a ton of the shows on it, even if I never ever watch it again (which I'll still do, because I like a lot of the stuff on it, too).

That, I think, is more a function of budget.

I'm not really bothered by it, to be honest. I'd rather be left wanting more than feeling irritated at how shows drag on and drag out stories. Keep it tight, tell your story, get in, and get out.

damn, there goes half my hat. It's ok she can start an only fans and do Cara Dune sexy cosplay....that should make Disney Happy.

Wait so does this mean they can't sell her merch anymore? So disney lost her and they lost the ability to sell her characters merch?

You'd think they could have easily just done a "The view and opinions expressed by Gina, do not necessarily reflect those of Disney and Lucasfilm."

I mean is it not weird that someone has to choose between thier career or expressing their opinions and beliefs?

Disney/LFL owns the rights to that character. I'm sure they also have a deal with her likeness in respect to that character. They can probably still sell merch with Gina's likeness as Cara, but...why would they?

Many, many people in the entertainment industry have contracts with "morals clauses" in them. They choose to take these deals knowing full well their employment can be terminated for things they do outside of their job. Hell, the terms at the RPF state you can be banned for things you do outside this forum. You did know that, right?

No, not in the least. Like, I'm an attorney by trade. I'm not in the habit of telling my clients what my politics are. My twitter account could be found, I suppose, but (1) nobody cares about me enough to try, and (2) I keep a separate twitter account for my professional stuff (which I barely use). My point is that I don't go broadcasting my politics. I keep it to myself.

And the thing is, nobody's forcing her to either keep it to herself or broadcast. It's entirely up to her. She could run a twitter account that just talks fan stuff and never touches politics. She could go hard-in on MMA discussions, focusing entirely on technique and theory and whatnot. But instead, she decided to post political stuff, and it got her in trouble. Again, likely after she'd already been warned to chill out.
