The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

One more thing, those of you who have had a shield professionally clear coated, did you guys attach the shield before or after clear coating? Any reactions to testors paints? I work with kids and sometimes let the kids handle the shield for pics, so I'm trying to figure out ways to make the shield more durable, easier to handle, and safe. Thanks guys.

I had the star, shield, and brackets professionally clearcoated separately. Then final assembled.

Valor did you strip the clear coat from the star area of shield before attaching it? Oh and il be contacting rolo and you soon as my health reimbursement comes back.

Painting is one hell of a process, But I think I'm getting the hang of it. here's an update from taped on stand to my fifth and final coat. So far I'm impressed with the turn out, but I'll see later today in natural sunlight. Overall I think a clear coat job would really make this look professional. But that remains to be seen. Thanks again for all the help, advice, and support, everyone! I'll be painting the red rings tomorrow. I imagine that's when the real difficulty begins.

Looks gorgeous. Love that blue.

Thanks, Valor! Blue came out great. I had a rough start today. Sliced open my leg cutting up cardboard for a back drop. 3 stitches, minor set back haha. Came back and began painting. Just finished up the red, which was definitely a more daunting task than blue. Very difficult to spread evenly on the coats. after the second coat, I started painting half the shield and spinning it and painting the other half. Overall though, it came out better than I thought it was going to. I used 6 coats for the red. Can't wait to epoxy the star and mount the harness tomorrow!

Looking nice! The kid in me could never wait until the red was done drying to peel the tape off the blue and clear ring. I always wanted to see the full effect asap. Haha

Lmao thanks! I've been debating over the last few hours to just peel off the tape and see how it looks. But I keep telling myself, "just wait, tomorrow will feel like Christmas morning." haha. I have to leave the house or something.

I will tempt you further... pulling the tape off doesn't effect the red drying :)

Have any of you guys traveled on an airplane with a metal shield? Have you checked it in or shipped it to you? Any problems at the airport? Im trying to figure out which route to go

This worked. I stayed up all night attaching the stat and the brackets. Hahaha. Overall, I'm really happy with it and I cannot thank everyone enough for the help--specially you Drake and Valor for the parts and advice--Couldn't have done it without either of you. One thing though--upon close inspection there are nicks and marks I'd like to get rid of or clean up. Is there any touch up paint or buffing process you guys recommend?

That looks awesome man! Congrats! Haven't put a clear coat yet have you? It's almost a shame to put on a clear. I really love how it looks raw. I've actually talked myself into making one more shield this time with inner rings and a full bracket.

What kinds of nicks/marks? Close up pics?

Spray the red and blue you used into small jars with a straw and let it degas, then you can use it as touch up paint

Okay, I plan on painting this weekend so I just read through the entire thread. I just have a few questions. I don't think I have the time to build a rack to hold the shield vertically, so I'm thinking of clamping a rod to a weighted table and sticking the rod through the hole in the blank shield to paint. I think that will allow me to spin it as I paint. Anyone see a potential downside to this?

I plan on using Dupli-color Metalcast MC200 - Red Anodized and MC201 - Blue Anodized is there a recommended clear coat to use? I know drakeprimeone used duplicolor perfect match clear coat, but I'm concerned about using any gloss would make it look too glossy (as is my experience with using glossy paint) I saw Krylon clear coat satin mentioned many times so I may go with that. I haven't read too much concern about clear coats so I take it that any is fine just depending on the effect you want?

Also what's a good wait time for letting the paint dry before masking over it for the next color? I know the can usually tell you but I'd like to hear anyone's general experience with that. I'm not sure how much warm weather I'll be getting this weekend and it would be great to condense the time if I can.

I've never painted a shield in a vertical position, they have always laid flat. So long as your spray passes are even and clean it shouldn't matter. It will pretty much be at your comfort level.

Clear coat is pretty much your preference for the effect.

I usually wait 24 hours between painting the blue and the red. Taping up sooner and you run the risk of pulling up the paint.
