The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Man, I think I got a bum batch of sleds. I was able to take the two that were rusted the least and clean them up with stripping pads and a few hours of sweat and elbow grease. I got them to look *wonderful.* I did the first three nights ago & taped it up, then did the second this afternoon.

I decided to clear coat the backs today, then sketch out my lines tonight or tomorrow. Well, as I take the tape off of the back of the one I did the other day, I find that it has already rusted!! Good lord! My home is not humid, the humidity is 50% outside (which shouldn't matter, as I'm doing all of this indoors), and I used the same tape that I've used in the past & that others use here.

My only conclusion, given that two of the sleds had rust under the paint upon stripping, all four flash rusted within hours of stripping, and one has rusted under the tape within two days, is that this is simply a bad batch of sleds. Seeing as how they were given to me out of their boxes at the warehouse, I can only guess that they've seen some sort of action---stored in a humid place, caught in some flooding, carbon scoring from the Rebellion against the Empire, etc.

If they're rusting within two days of taping, I just don't think that it's feasible to work with them--there's no way the unpainted ring will survive waiting for a clear coat after painting the red & blue and the necessary wait time between the two.

What's the weather like there? Where were y keeping them? The humidity will accelerate the flash rusting

It's been in the high 60s to mid-70s, though it's 84 today. I've kept them on the first floor of my home.

I may experiment with clear coating both sides right away (after cleaning up the one that's already rusted some), then taping, marking, painting and re-clearcoating on top of the base clear coat. My worry with that is that taping on top of the clear is going to muck up the base clear coat, though I suppose I can always remove that layer with acetone before painting.

Every sled I've encountered flash rusted after removing the paint.

As for my shield, I got the red painted this morning. Going to get the blue done tomorrow, and clear Friday so it's ready for Dallas Comic Con this weekend

Looking forward to comparing shields with you Kevin!

Well, decision time. There are a few imperfections on my red. The finish is perfectly smooth, and the color is great. Those spots are going to bother me, though. I don't think I'll have enough time to strip it and repaint before the weekend. Looks like I'll be sporting a "good enough" shield this weekend

Kevin,

What would you suggest to combat the flash rusting? Gonna be working on my first sled soon and I'd like it to go as smoothly as it possibly can.

Thanks,
Aeric

Hi guys just a quick question before I start masking my shield up.

Where should the colours finish?

Blue Circle, Blue Groove

Red Circle, Red Groove

Silver Circle, Silver Groove

Red outer circle shield edge

Any advice would be great.

In a perfect scenario the grooves are all half and half.

Blue circle, half of the groove blue, other half red, red circle. Etc

Sans clear coat, and still need to attach the star

Well ive failed to get either Duplicolour or Testor in the UK :( just not going to happen.

Im going to try to find a good UK equivalent. Has anyone done any research into the specific pantone colours used for caps shield? Every photo, they all look a bit different. Does anyone know the pantone colours of either the Duplicolour or Testor paints?

Testor's should have a hex color chart that could be converted to pantone.

I'll see what I can find in my model stuff but google maybe the faster and better bet.

Well, unless I'm mistaken (it's one of these colors) that leaves you with:

-Testor's Candy Red : #D40022

-Testor's Hot Rod Red : #D3005A (This looks incredibly pink to me, but that could be my monitor)

-Testor's Transparent Blue : #0057AC

Not finding the transparent red, but I'm pretty sure it's one of those two options. Thanks for the source!

If I don't get the straps done tonight, they'll definitely be finished tomorrow. I'll shoot some "finished" pics tomorrow afternoon after the clear has been applied :thumbsup

I'm about to start really working on a sled/shield. I've cut off the rolled edge but that's as far as I've gotten so far. But I had a question I haven't seen. Any suggestions on how I might make the grooves between each stripe? Or at least something that looks like it? The steel is so thin I don't really expect to be able to have a deep groove in it but something that gives the impression would be great.
