The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Here is a pic. Long enough to down the entire shield. Very flexible and you might be able to notice the holes I drilled into the ruler.

Question: it seems the majority is painting their shields vertically, attached to some rig, through the center hole. Some, spinning rhen for evenness.

Whether vertical or horizontal, how is everyone painting the edge of the shield? Is it just being painted along with the outer ring? Any recommended techniques to avoid too much paint on the outer ring?

i paint all my shield horizontally... never tried vertical. Vertical could yield better results but horizontal works just fine for me. The edge of my shields get painted at the same time as the outer ring. Generally the edge is fully painted after I lay the 2nd coat of red on the rings. It shouldn't need that much

I painted mine horizontally just fine. I just laid it down on top of an old bar stool so i could get at the entire outer edge easily.

Hey guys. Just starting the process of painting my shield. I live in the UK. The pictures drake posted of the paint cans are great but a bit blured, i can't seem to read there specific color code and this is a long thread :) could someone please note down the Duplicolor red/blue/clear and the Testor equivalents for me? I can then try to track them down :) Many Thanks

Ah, that's why I couldn't see any codes... simple as that. Thanks!

Edit... I hate living in the UK, can't get anything in this country :( I'll keep looking.

Just picked up my sled! What was funny was the guy at the hardware store even said... this would make a good cap shield ;)

Picking up some more supplies tomorrow and getting started on the stripping

I haven't even received my shield yet, but last night I had a dream (more like a nightmare) about taping and painting grooves, and overspray.

Crap. What have I gotten myself into?

Haha I was already thinking the same thing.

I love my wife... she made the following comment.... "wait you're going to start a cap shield?... what about finishing the other 9 projects you havent finished" haha I cant be the only one who has too many damn projects running at one time.

I just tested my clear coat on an extra star that I made and it seems like I lost almost all of the spun aluminum effect. You can see the one with clear on the left and the one w/o clear on the right. Does that mean I just put on way too much clear coat, or do I need to do something like wet sand it to get the spin back? Or, does that mean I didn't make enough of a spun effect in the first place?

Thanks in advance, these threads are an amazing resource!

It looks to be a bit of both.. more on the side that you didn't put enough spun effect on the star. You pretty much need to work the scotch Bright pad enough so that the original outer "skin" of aluminum is completely spun away

1.5 inches. You can buy them from Tandy leather. They are called belt blanks.

Man, I think I got a bum batch of sleds. I was able to take the two that were rusted the least and clean them up with stripping pads and a few hours of sweat and elbow grease. I got them to look *wonderful.* I did the first three nights ago & taped it up, then did the second this afternoon.

I decided to clear coat the backs today, then sketch out my lines tonight or tomorrow. Well, as I take the tape off of the back of the one I did the other day, I find that it has already rusted!! Good lord! My home is not humid, the humidity is 50% outside (which shouldn't matter, as I'm doing all of this indoors), and I used the same tape that I've used in the past & that others use here.

My only conclusion, given that two of the sleds had rust under the paint upon stripping, all four flash rusted within hours of stripping, and one has rusted under the tape within two days, is that this is simply a bad batch of sleds. Seeing as how they were given to me out of their boxes at the warehouse, I can only guess that they've seen some sort of action---stored in a humid place, caught in some flooding, carbon scoring from the Rebellion against the Empire, etc.

If they're rusting within two days of taping, I just don't think that it's feasible to work with them--there's no way the unpainted ring will survive waiting for a clear coat after painting the red & blue and the necessary wait time between the two.
