The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Battle damaged...

Wow very nice work! I have to admit I wasn't a big fan of the stealth shield but your battle damaged version looks great! The bits of red really work well! Did you end up going with testors or duplicolor?

Jax, those shields look sick! Mind sharing the shade of blue you used for the rings on the stealth shield?

I used Dupilcolor.

For the blue I used... See attached picture. Used mainly the lighter color with the darker as shading.

thank you for the compliments.

I need someone's help.

I'm trying to locate a shield that has been painted with Duplicolor, but has a satin clearcoat.

Can someone refer what post has this? Or link me?

My shield is here and it's crunch time. I want to paint this weekend. Thanks for your help.

(As an aside, is there a tape better than Frogtape for pushing into the grooves for cutting, without tearing?)

Here is my old shield painted with Duplicolor and satin clear.

I'll get my new shield photographed once I get it repainted. For the grooves I use frog tape "delicate surfaces" (it's yellow instead of green) and it works very well

So I'm just starting out and since Comic Con was already here I went with the TFA Steve Rogers uniform scene from when he first finds the shield in Howard Stark's lab.

Good to see you here! We talked shields at the Pannaus Props booth Sunday. Let me know if I can help in any way :thumbsup

Thank you for sharing, Kevin. I'm not sure it's the pic, but it almost looks like Testors paints in that picture. Does the satin clear really take away the anodized look?

Does anyone else have their Duplicolor shield with satin clear to show off? Or link me to some pics? Thanks.

I can still see the anodized look. I can also tell that is duplicolor. I could spray you a sample of duplicolor with a satin clear later today on some aluminum. Kevins pic is accurate to the look you will get if you do duplicolor with satin clear

Thank you, Drake. I look forward to seeing those.

Jax I'm very curious how you achieved the peeled off red patches.

Mustard... Painted the complete shield red, blue and silver. When it completely dried I masked off everything except the red... Applied Mustard...sprayed blued...when the blue dried I scrubbed the areas where the mustard was and the blue paint came off with it.

That's brilliant! Tell me,... was it French's, Gulden's, or Grey Poupon? :p

I guess any water soluble thick liquid would work.

Nice painting trick. Thanks.

Haha that's awesome. So that means there is red underneath the blue ring. Which further means that the paint isn't anodized, correct?

Are there any opinions on clear satins? Do they vary from brand to brand? I want as delicate a satin look as possible-- one that won't obscure the anodized look.

Also, if an area was already cleaned with acetone and then taped, do I need to acetone it again when I uncover it for painting?

It's a good idea to re wipe down with acetone the areas that you pulled the tape off of incase there is lingering residue. As far as a delicate satin look that will probably have more to do with your spraying technique than the actual brand you use.

Thanks. I think I've determined how to do so without accidentally wiping acetone on a freshly painted area. Just took some thought. Heh.

Any recommendations on how to lay down a delicate satin coat?

I went to Lowes yesterday and the only clear satin they had was their house brand-- Valspar. I wasn't sure if one satin was as good as another, and since I haven't even painted yet, I held off. Got the acetone and Frogtape Delicate Surfaces, tho.

Oh,,and that reminds me. The guy at Lowes didn't know what this piece of hardware was. Hadn't seen one in four years. I couldn't find it on the shelves either. What is the name of this item, and where can one commonly find it? Thanks.
