The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

Check my most recent thread. You could take a dremel and copy my rig. If I remember right, the sleds are about a 1/16" thickness, possibly slightly more. You'd have to be quite careful. Maybe chemically etch it? Pretty sure they're just mild steel.

the closest I've gotten to it is overlapping the blue in the red slightly so there is a shadow and the illusion that there is a groove. check out post number 636 and there is a picture of me holding a mini shield that will show you what I mean

That's a clever use of the overlapping! Really does look like you have an indent right there, especially since it covers the shininess of the underling steel with two separate layers. But what about the silver and red? I suppose he could overlap with a darker shade (add black/grey) and lighten the top? Give the illusion of depth? You're way better at painting than I am, I always go the mechanical/physical way out. With etching using an acid like distilled white vinegar and a car battery charger, it would be quite easy to get depths around a 1/32 of an inch, and not horribly time consuming on that grade of steel.

I works love to see the results of an acid etch! That sounds really cool

Wow, the overlapping really does look nice. Maybe I can pull that off. You're painting skills are pretty remarkable.

Alright! So I'm officially collecting supplies to start painting. I want the "Winter Soldier" finish, which from what I can tell will be achieved by using the Testors paint. So before I head down to Hobby Lobby I wanted to know:

Will one can of the "Candy Red" be enough for the shield? I'm sure one can of "Transparent Blue" will be enough, but I'm not so sure on the red. And could the same be said for the clear coat?

You will need two cans of red. One can off clear should work unless you are planning to use it on the inside as well

Why wouldn't one want to clearcoat the back? It too could get fingerprints and discoloration.

Good info on the two cans of red. I just assumed one would do it.

You would but you can use a less expensive krylon clear on the inside as opposed to the more expensive testors clear

...because it's just for protection, and not for looks?

I would think I'd go satin on the inside (especially since I know I want satin on the outside). Curious if anyone has any opposing views.

Krylon makes a satin. The brand testors as a whole is more expensive considering you get a little bitty can. Look at mtrixmans shield on here. He used testors clear on the outside and krylon in the inside. Either way though. You can go testors for the un painted side

Well, my can of clear sputtered halfway through the first coat, so now I've got several spots all over my shield. Not a very happy camper to say the least! It will have to suffice for tomorrow though. I'll strip it after the Con and repaint

Why not use a can of Krylon from the start? Does it have to be Testors on Testors? Or Duplicolor on Duplicolor, for that matter?

Do some tests with the different paints to make sure you won't have any compatibility issues, but no it shouldn't matter. I use the Duplicolor red and blue with a Rustoleum clear.

So mtrixman's shield is with the testors? Does that include the red/blue as well as the clear?
