The Definitive Peter Quill/Star-Lord Costume Thread

im really tempted to return the eBay jacket and purchase the one you have. But I know as soon as I do, an even more accurate jacket will pop up somewhere!

Well, if it was a custom order trading-plus won't want it back, but if it's a standard size and they have a return policy on the auction then you'd have more luck. I have to try to sell mine outright since it was custom sized - the overall length is an inch short due to the collar misunderstanding, but still looks ok. I might darken it to make it a little more attractive to the buyer as well.

This is my first cosplay that included weapons of any kind, and I'm concerned over weapons policies. Is anyone giving their blasters an orange tip? Some cons say "futuristic" or "obviously fake" guns don't need it but other cons say all weapons need the orange tip. Thoughts??

It depends where you are and what Cons you're planning on going to. I'm a little fuzzy on the laws in the United States on the orange tips ( I heard they were going to be chaning it), but I know here in Canada despite what the majority of the population believe and what many Cons have in their Weapons/Costumes policies orange tipping your prop guns is NOT a guarantee that you are safe from having your prop confiscated or finding yourself in trouble with the local authorities. Every place has a varying degree of how strict they are and unfortunately when it comes to the police it is a per-case, per-attitude law. One cop could say it's acceptable and another could slap you with a hefty fine. I don't know if there have been any serious incidences yet, but someone could easily apply orange paint or tape to a real gun which is why it doesn't have any practical legal standing. Even within the borders of the Con venue you're not necessarily safe as police can often show up to ensure local by-laws of all sorts are being adhered to. And even within a Con the volunteers and staff may have opposing views on what is acceptable and what is not, even after an item has been peace-bonded. It's quite a stressful situation for all involved due to the vagueness of most policies.

The best advice I can give is that yes, the more obnoxious and fake looking the gun the better, it's better that it's "broken", that is, that it cannot fire, not simply that it has no ammo inside of it because NERF guns can be modified to shoot some pretty nasty projectiles made out of heavy and sharp materials. Check your local by-laws instead of relying only on the policies placed up by the Con, unfortunately, people who run the Cons might not have familiarized themselves with their city's by-laws and are giving people the benefit of the doubt to behave themselves.

Another rule of thumb is that if it looks like the real deal at 25 feet in the dark you probably shouldn't bring it out in public with you, whether or not you'll be in low light areas is irrelevant. I hope that helps, if you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

P.S. I will not be adding the orange tip to my NERF blasters because I've already discussed this with my local Con's weapons compliance lead because they do not look like real guns (as well as the fact that I already mentioned that putting an orange tip on is sort of useless). And I might be putting electronics in mine which would render their ability to fire ammo obsolete.

Risu, where are you finding the dimensions of the arm patch that you're referencing?

I think Risu's measurements are pretty close, but I got slightly different using the 1" elastic strap on the jacket:

Annnnnd.... GDit this jacket is too big! NONE of my provided measurements were used - everything is 1 to 2 full inches over the lengths I gave them. Here is hoping it was just a mixup - looks like they just sent me a straight up size 48 (my custom sizing was based on a 44 at that); hopefully an exchange can be had fairly quickly - this one took 16 days from payment to package. Ouch.

i did the same scaling for the patch, using the same picture and one I took myself. The numbers came out a little different. After shrinkage though, my badges come out at 2.1875" x 4.375".

My Star Lord jacket from Pakistan is finally here. It is synthetic leather. Am OK with that. Was just a tad north of $100 USD with shipping. Ordered on Sept 27 and received on Oct 7. Bought on eBay HERE. I am 5' 7" around 145 lbs and bought a size MED. Fits perfect. No alterations needed. Good foundation to start customizing.

Here are various lighting options for the Star Lord RED eyes effects I have been tinkering with.

1. RTGS Products 20 micro RED LED string lights. If too many LEDs cut off what is not needed. 3 to 6 LEDs per eye. $6.25 shipped. NEG is the bulky 3 "AA" batteries holder. LINK HERE

2. RTGS Products 20 micro RED LED string lights. Not yet available to the public. Was given this free sample to tinker with. Powered by 2 CR2032 watch batteries. Looks like a winner.

3. RGB LED controller. WOW feature is the 24 button remote control. Customize to your need. We have on order a T-connector to add another 4" LED. LINK HERE

Has anyone found a good way to secure the blasters to their sides? I've looked around at Home Depot, but couldn't come up with anything I was really happy with.

I'm using these! Just glue the small piece to the handle

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the great resources! This Halloween will be my first cosplay experience, and I'm pretty pumped. I wanted to post some before pictures of the materials I have, with more on the way. I also wanted to publish my plan of attack to hold myself to it.

Most excited about the cassette player I found on eBay: just as boxy and nearly perfect match when inverted. The buttons will be lower on the case as a result, but I'm going to add the orange button on top, and hollow out as much of the case as possible. I'm going to slide in my cell phone so the headphones attach to the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 on repeat. Also going to add an LED to the tape door so you can see the cassette in all lighting conditions.

Blaster is on the way, looking forward to repainting it...

I'm going to take the Star Lord mask you can buy and augment it with cardboard as per the awesome walkthrough already posted, or that's the plan anyway. If the back assembly for the helmet goes well, I'm going to repaint the entirety. The front looked pretty daunting, so I want to use the pre-produced version as a base. If nothing else, I'm going to add a red LED on the inside of the forehead of the mask.

I ordered some spats to customize and put over my motorcycle boots. Really excited to get to work on them. I am saving the boot rockets for absolute last. I want them either done the right way or not at all; I'll just add the 'plate' shown in the pictures if I don't create the actual assembly.

Any input is appreciated, thanks again!

Got the helmet today. Disappointing. Paint job is a little better then the Rubie's 3/4" vinyl mask. Item was sent in a DHL baggie only and it was flattened. Anyway it looks to be some type of thick rubber material. Was expecting a hard solid helmet. Negative is how the back is done. Cut in half with a stretchy strap with one side of the helmet missing a chunk?! it would have been good to keep that section in place vs cutting it out!! The Glow Glass effects looks cool and you need to tape it inside yourself. powered by 2 CR 2032 batteries. In the pic the protective paper is still on hence the lack of brightness from the lights. I have emailed the seller and see if they have sent the wrong model. If this is indeed the final product i will return it. I think i will just up my budget and go the 3D printed helmet way :)

Just an update. Seller is paying for the return shipping so it is going back. Just dropped off to the PO. If you have a 22" diameter head it will be a fit tight and if you wear glasses forget about it. It would have been passable if the back portion was not cut out and cut in half. IMHO would have been better sold as a whole solid piece and let the customer cut it into the 2 halves and mount with some type of a hinge, velcro and or rare earth magnets. Hope this helps with your Star Lord cosplay.

i was thinking of buying the etsy jacket as well......any sggestions on what size i should get then? I asked them an they said they would remove the patch if i left that in a note.

Well, they told me they'd do my measurements if I left them in a note, and did not, so repeat the note with your payment, in an email, in the etsy transaction, everywhere.... If you can wear an off-the-rack jacket in a given size, go for that size - I have a feeling mine would fit a guy who normally wears a 48 jacket, for instance. Me, I'm short and stocky and have shortish arms, so normal sizes never fit me right. The jacket looks good - not perfect, but quite good - if juuuust a touch overpriced. It's 75% of the price of my Heron Wolverine X1 jacket, but more like 65% of the jacket-per-dollar, if that makes sense. Were it perfect to my measurements like the Heron, I'd be totally satisfied with it until such time as a completely perfect one hits the scene, if it ever does.

I believe it was 16 days from order to receipt, so yes, decide quickly!

this is what i'm thinking for the painted/modded nerf blaster, but i'm having issues w/ my 3d printer (aka it was delivered monday and i haven't had time to calibrate it yet) & the blasters are being painted, so don't want to use my calipers on them right now, so can't get exact measurements & adjustments done

(model overlaid on a picture of starlord's pants)
HolsterModel.jpg
this would be the right side clip, with the parallel clips grabbing the guard between the triggers, and the perpendicular shelf supports the weight of the blaster to keep the other clips from sliding up & hitting the triggers.

sketchup file's been shared here if someone else wants to grab it & tweak it for everyone to use.
