The Definitive Peter Quill/Star-Lord Costume Thread

Shoe polish! Genius.

I was trying to pre-emptively come up with a way to darken my jacket if it was too bright when it arrived. Looks awesome man!

Edit: I just realized this is my second ever post on the RPF. I'm way more of a lurker than I thought.

Thanks guys! I'm very pleased with the final product. I may add one last light layer, as after shining it slightly some of the polish wore off. Next up with be weathering my motorcycle pants and satchel.

Which type of motorcycle pants did you get? I'm still undecided on those.

I've been following this thread for a while but haven't posted anything yet. Just paying attention to all the reference :)

Hi Penrose I bought the same motorcycle pants as user ErkNinja. Link to his thread here with pics and 411. May not be screen accurate but a good solid foundation to work with.

Quick update, I've received the TheJacketMaker jacket (from Etsy) - I will take more pics when home this evening, but right out of the gate I like it way better than the trading plus jacket, personally (of course, it was 2x the money...)

Pros and cons:

+ The red is nice and dark. It has been gone over with sort of a sloppy brown overlayer - purposely sloppy so it also acts as visual distressing as well, not like they were trying to dye it evenly and simply failed.

+ The additional details are there - the paneling/patterning on the left sleeve flap, the oval grommeted sleeve straps instead of the sliders with buckles (note: the trading plus jacket also has these), and even the patch on the left sleeve flap. I need to see some screenshots to know if I need to fade or distress that part.

+/- The snake-scale patterned leather is more visually accurate from any distance at all than the perforated. It's not as accurate as screenprinting your own triangle pattern for sure, but I think it's serviceable. The reason it might also be a negative is that I sort of think there is too much of it - i.e. panels I don't think were patterned in the film jacket are so here; the only non-scaled leather on this jacket is the sleeves and sleeve flaps, but I think on the movie jacket the sides under the arms, and the side panels of the back, also didn't look patterned. Still, looks good.

+ it's fully lined, with a dark copper/light bronze colored satin

+/- The fashionweight leather is very soft, not sure how sturdy it'll be

- The leather dye sort of stops at overlaps - meaning if you look under the sleeve flaps, even just under the edges, you see the original, pale-red leather color. I might try to remedy that on my own but I'm not totally sure what to use

- It's ever-so-slightly big even though I gave them my measurements. I don't think it's anything I can't deal with though. I am slightly afraid to try the hot water shrinkage treatment because I don't know just how water safe these colorants are.

Still I really like it - here are a couple quick cell pics from the office.

That is a really solid looking jacket, and I dig the snakeskin pattern, though I do agree there's a bit too much of it going on - it's distracting on things like the straps under the ribs on the side. Still, looks leaps and bounds better than the trading plus one!

Is the patch just sewn or glued on? I would scrap it in lieu of one of the offerings in the junkyard. It looks like a cheap add-on compared to the rest of the jacket.

The patch is fully embroidered and sewn on. I will have to check out the JY offerings, but this one is at least a quality patch. If it's not accurate enough then that's a different story, but it's at least not just something printed and stuck on.

This is my first cosplay that included weapons of any kind, and I'm concerned over weapons policies. Is anyone giving their blasters an orange tip? Some cons say "futuristic" or "obviously fake" guns don't need it but other cons say all weapons need the orange tip. Thoughts??

As long as they are "peace bonded" (triggers ziptied back so they can't be even dry-fired) I've never seen anyone have a problem with more realistic guns. Then again, I'm using Dragon Con as the main example in my experiences - I've seen far less of the realistic guns at the smaller cons I've been to (never been to SDCC or NYCC, for comparison). I had Borderlands guns that weren't even peace-bonded but of course they're more obvious. Friend of mine does a couple Western based costumes and his revolvers look real enough, but again they're ziptied.

That jacket looks great! If I had the extra cash to throw around I would have definitely invested in that one!

Heh, I didn't technically have the cash to throw around, but for some reason I really want this costume to turn out amazingly - I can't remember the last time I was this *into* a specific costume. Of course, I'm also hating the fact that I don't have all the time and skill to make everything myself - I'm getting a raw foam helmet premade, having a friend 3d-print the boot rockets for me, and am modding the nerf blasters, for instance. There will still be parts of my own 'junk build' style, but I actually feel guilty about using things made by others!

That Etsy jacket looks pretty nice. A couple details off, but the patterning should definitely be on the side panels and straps. The only difference was those panels were considerably darker on the real thing. The biggest failing of that jacket is the patch. It's insanely massive. I'd be curious to know the dimensions of it, but it looks like maybe 6" x 3" when the real one is 2.25" x 4.5".

Anyone got another source on where to get cheap, orange foam ear pad headphones? The Sound LAB ones at Juno Records linked to earlier in this thread appear to be sold out.

I just found this pic showing that, indeed, the patterning is on the sides and straps!

I can try to darken those panels up for sure.

As for the patch - I couldn't tell that it was far too large but I was just happy to see that it was included. Let's see... yes, looks like 3x6", but a lot of that is border - might be able to try to blend some red into the edge to reduce the visual footprint. Overall it doesn't bug me tho. I do want to add the silver edge drybrushing to it, too.

Risu, where are you finding the dimensions of the arm patch that you're referencing?

Hey everybody what's a good sealant to keep all these dye layers on the leather, instead of, say, on my car seats? I did a test wet-rub on my jacket and some color came off on the napkin, but I can't tell if that's full-blown color or if it's just maybe some excess on top of fully-cured dye...?

=0)

I know how you feel! I'm getting my Star-Lord helm from the run happening on this forum, I had a etsy user make me an orb out of a styrofoam craft ball, I've purchased the half-chaps, boots, pants, bag, and jacket from various places. I also just repainted the Nerf quad blasters. I did manage to repaint an inaccurate walkman and make it look much better. So yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'll probably try to make the belt buckle myself, out of craft foam.

im really tempted to return the eBay jacket and purchase the one you have. But I know as soon as I do, an even more accurate jacket will pop up somewhere!
