The Definitive Peter Quill/Star-Lord Costume Thread

Here's the latest on my current kit build. I've only just started laying out and sizing the dark grey details.

I hope to have a first print to show this weekend.

Do we know anyone who makes screen accurate pants?
No one is making them commercially as far as I know. Some folks have found motorcycle pants that have a similar style, but nowhere near accurate in terms of details.

Aside from a few minor things where I had to improvise for fit and such, I came pretty darn close in regards to details. I'll be showing off my entire suit as soon as I have time to do a proper photoshoot and have something more "complete", since my ensemble is far from finished. I'm still cranking out raw prop pieces for the most part and still have the trenchcoat, vest and bag looming ahead. (Not to mention a 1:1 Groot and Rocket with gun!) As far as patterns go I don't really have anything to share. I made mine by cutting up a pair of combat pants as a base pattern, then just modifying everything around them as I went along with and iPad full of photos next to me. I don't have anything even close a finished blueprint drawn up, just a plastic bag of cutouts and scraps that I'm not even sure I could make heads nor tails of now if I had to make a second pair. (The jacket I made is kind of in the same situation. I never made them with any thought of making more copies. It was all done in a mad blur over several weeks.)

Those are really nice. I wish I had seen them before I got the ones I did. I got the Xelement Black Stonewash Denim Motorcycle pants. They were the first ones I could find cheap and in a size 44. But they were really long for me and I had to hem them.

We just got this bad-boy assembled today. (And it comes -full assembled- cough. None of this stitch your own bs)

What kind of color do you use that requires you to wet the leather? I've been doing leather work for years using water and alcohol based dyes and I've never needed to do that. The trick is just to use a sponge brush.

What leather are you using to die when wet? Veg-tanned leather of most grades will harden on you if you wet it and then saturate it with dye. Wetting can also cause blotting.

And my most sincere apologies, never meant to take a pot shot, only to simply state that we can save hours of stitching time.

I'm not talking about soaking the piece. Just lightly dampening the surface. I've never had it harden the leather, and it actually gives me a more even color. To each their own.

I haven't had water harden the leather unless it's hot water. But yea, a foam sponge brush, give it a shot.

Kevin is correct. It is beneficial to wet veg tan leather when using alcohol dyes. Alcohol dyes go on MUCH darker on dry leather than damp.

For instance (these were down and dirty dye jobs for quick tests, but they get the point across)
With wet

Dry

Both are Feibings light brown alcohol dye

I will usually lightly dampen my leather prior to dying with a wool dauber for even coverage. You will get blotching though if the leather is too wet, so don't over-do it.
