So everyone is selling the same thing at different prices!
Many of those sellers are money-grabbing sweatshops based out of extreme low-wage countries. They steal images from one another or make up different ebay accounts in attempts to show themselves off differently for different people. (Some will be put off if a places appears to be too "cheap" and others if it appears to be too expensive, so they provide both storefronts.) In general, many such places have
zero eye or care for accuracy if they can get away with it. Just ask someone like Kurt Struss of the Dredd group who struggled for 1+ years to get a place in Pakistan to make accurate Dredd suits. He got there in the end, but man... what a struggle. The first armor vest I got was sewn with panels upside down!
A lot of the time when I have contacted these places with a special request or
offer to help them make something more accurate (including the Star lord jacket) they just say "not interested". (That's why I ended up making my own.) I would be extra wary of the places that just use stock photos from Hot Toys. (It was rampant with Nick Fury's coats as well... none of the places I looked at showed the actual jacket they made and none of them realized that it was waxed cotton, not leather.) Another thing to keep in mind (if you care about such things) is that many of the mega-cheap leather places likely use less-than-healthy methods and chemicals when prepping their leather. I'm sure a proper leatherworker can clarify this (I'm no expert) but there is even some talk in some places about potential health risks regarding low-quality leathers being worn directly against the skin (without lining) due to possible chemical residue.
Now, take the above as you will. There ARE exceptions and you will sometimes find a maker that you can work with. But if you see the exact same photo in several places and it sounds too cheap to to true... well... you know. : )
A good way to do a cheap'n'cheerful replica jacket would be to get a twill jacket (like a denim jacket) and dye it red as a starting point. Use plastidip or something on the arms- maybe roll them with thick latex to get a leather-like texture like when you're making a Batman cape. (
Or get one of the cosplay places to make one for you with a body out of denim.) You can easily use some bleach to get the orange weathering (or just use an acrylic rattle can of spray paint). Use clear spray paint and a stencil (such as a metal sheet with holes) to do the gloss pattern effect (even an inaccurate pattern would still be more like the real jacket than a perforated leather body). You can even mask off the areas where there is no pattern. Do the embossing yourself as well... it's not too hard and a couple folks here have shown how it's done.
