Boy, I'm only three episodes in and already this show is a chore to sit through; I just keep dozing off. I want something to latch onto but everything is so...thin. I find that the show has the same problems I had with the movie. Just...longer.
While I admire the attempt of a fantasy/adventure done with puppets, it just doesn't work. By its very nature, puppetry is limiting. Yoda works in ESB as an effect and a character because he isn't seen and doesn't do much. With the show, and the movie, we're with these things the entire time, and everything is shot in a way to hide it's a puppet as much as it can, which hinders the film-making. The show and the movie are all in close-ups and mediums, which makes the world feel very small. And being in close-ups and mediums, we're naturally drawn to the faces on screen. I guess it's an "uncanny valley" thing because the closer it looks to human, the more it's going to have to try to convince it's real. Having hair, realistic eyes, and skin textures; things that closely resemble human features, but static-y puppet mouth flaps, it just doesn't look good. They mention in the making-of documentary for this show that there was CG help added to the facial expressions, but I guess that was ultimately dropped from the show due to budget.
Had they put the same amount of effort into the writing as the fabrication work, I think I wouldn't be as harsh as I am. It would at least give me something to latch on to, but---"They're absconding with the essence!" Even George Lucas doesn't write lines that stiff. I want to admire the craftsmanship of it all, individual aspects I can, but I don't care about the characters or the story, so it ultimately serves nothing for me.
