Necroing a bit, but just got this on DVD. Did see it in the cinema, liked it, but not as much as I could have. Seeing it again, I decided I must have been in a bad mood the first time. There's a lot to like, just to choose a few random examples:
* general respect for Herge, especially the nice mechanism at the beginning, taking us from dot-eyes to real ones. It's not a transition as such, it's just a sweetener - good one though. I thought it overdone first time around, but now I like it.
* the cars, oh my god, the cars.
* the ships, oh my god, the ships. My father's a writer but as a young man he spent years at sea on old tramp steamers like the Karaboudjan; he loved this movie.
* the action is often Spielberg in Temple of Doom mode, but isn't as overly frenetic as I thought first time. The tank chase scene really is beautifully done...I think it was a bit overwhelming on the big screen, but it's great at home
* just absolute ****tons of background detail from the comics
* storylines and characters from several books nicely melded
I had missed the Guardian's negative review. Really, if ever there was a time to sit back and say 'we're getting a treat here, this is complete gravy', this was it. The review is well off the mark, IMO.
Haddock absolutely IS a big scruffy kid in this movie. He spends most of his screen time more than half cut and when he's not drinking he's useless. The only thing that's off is the relative absence of the pipe, but it is in there.
Oh, and there's a full size German V2 rocket standing in a corner of the Sheikh's palace. Why is it there? I have no idea but I love it.
