The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

I just made my 500th blog post at The Project Workbench!

Today I removed the last of the floor pan and the firewall. Well, actually, I disconnected it. It's too heavy to remove. I'm going to saw it in half tomorrow, and then it'll be gone.

I've also filmed the next episode of ROTMM. And I already have one in the can, which should go up in a few days.

The Project Workbench: 500th Post! Floorpan and Firewall Disconnected.

This is great, I've been looking at this with interest although I've only scan read it.

So your dropping a full grp Batmobile body on this chassis & you have to cut & lengthen chassis & the propshaft, Does the body come with all the body to chassis mounting holes built in specificly for that chassis?? & do the body manufacturers specify how best to approach the cutting, welding & reinforcing of the chassis or do they leave that bit to you??
& finally are you doing the metalwork & welding yourself? & if not why not :)

looking forward to seeing this finnished (y)thumbsup

I will not be lengthening the drive shaft. The engine will be shifted toward the tail the same distance the chassis is stretched. The body does not include mounting points or anything like that. I will have to put those in myself. Each builder tends to do things differently, and there is no right or wrong way. Wait, there is a wrong way. lol. The way that doesn't work is the wrong way. But you know what I mean. Many builders have come before me, and I will be following their lead, taking the good and ignoring the bad. I'm going to be doing almost all of the metalwork myself. The initial stretch will be done by a pro, as that is ONE set of welds I cannot afford to get wrong.

Minor update, thanks to the suggestions of forum members, I have listed the scrap parts on craigs list for free pickup. Hopefully someone will reply.

Good luck with the scrap, Matt.

When you get to the next stage, You need to get a grinder, a pack of thin cut off discs, and some flap discs. For safety, you will need some uvex goggles (or safety glasses AND full face shield) and a dual cartidge respirator with pink cartidges.

Always use your guard and grip, take your time and you'll be fine.

Believe me, it will make your life a hell of a lot easier.

Its even more complicated than I thought!
My trade is classic car restoration (17 years) & most of my work was in the fabrication/welding area so I can understand the scale of this job.
Its a hell of a job to be taking on without experience, Hats off to you Sir!!! :thumbsup your a brave man!
The welding/fabbing's one of the best bits, I'm glad your not leaving it all to someone else :)

Matt, this is impressive! You have raised the bar for anyone here! Well done my friend!

Hey Matt! Great stuff.
I LOVE this project! I haven't been on here much (at all?) since Comic Con and this was the first thing I found when I opened the site back up. Very cool.

While you have things apart, get pieces that you will re-use stripped and plated, painted or powder coated. It is so much nicer working with clean parts and you will protect them from rust. There are tons of places in Santa Ana that do (or did, when I loved in the OC) galvanized and other protective platings as well as the anodizing, and powder coating.
You want this thing to last and if you have to go back in and do repairs, upgrades, etc. It'll be more like you are working on a new car.

This is such an awesome project! If you have times when you need several hands to lift body parts on and off or other labor, please add me to your list. I can't always get away, but I would love to help on it!

To add to what others have said, great job so far and Kudos for taking on a project of this scale. Truly awesome.

Yo! Thanks for all the offers for help and kind words! I am certain I will be following up with anyone who offered to help :)

Today I am doing airbag research. i've found a company that sells a great kit, which is specifically designed for my chassis. It's been recommended highly by other bat car builders, and it looks great. Bummer is it's about 3,000 for the entire set up, which is more than I was hoping to spend.

SURPRISE! A project that's more expensive than initially anticipated. That NEVER happens!! next thing you know, it'll take longer than I originally thought too! I'm cursed!!!! :lol

I picked up one of those too. I need to finish it off. Killer prop.

BTW: MORE VIDS!!! I'm getting addicted to this progress.
