The 2009 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest.

Are the voting results going to be invisible until the end so that no one can boost votes for one that is in the lead or not vote for one in the lead to avoid letting it win? I think that all votes should be sent to you and not posted in the thread just to avoid any kind of "favoritism". Just my 2 cents...take it for what it's worth.

Either way, I can't wait to see what everyone's been working on.

Either way, I can't wait to see what everyone's been working on.

I have gave that a lot of thought. I pondered having everyone send me their vote via PM, and that way no-one has to worry about offending any friends, by voting for the "wrong" saber, etc. etc. However, by making it public, everyone sees every vote. That way there is no doubt of who voted for who, and that there vote was received. (and that way no-one can accuse me of a miss count, because they will be out there for all to count, and no-one can accuse me of any other kind of fowl play.) Plus we did it publicly when we've done these in the past, and it worked out ok.

I also debated if I should do it as a pole style post, or just have people post there vote. Wall, I think a Pole style would be nice, and neat, and it would look more official, I don't like the idea of every one seeing who is in the lead, at the top of the thread, before they see the actual sabers. (it's a psychological thing. ) I wouldn't want folks to see the pole, see who is clearly in the lead, and vote that way just to be popular, and what not.

So, each saber will get a number, and each person will cast there vote, by posting the Number they like best. It's simple, public, and old fashioned, but I think it will work ok.

I will also say this, I really want to make this about the saber and not about who is more popular, so I hope to keep every sabers owner publicly anonymous. (in other words I would rather folks not post pic else where, or say things like "mines number #5.") But then I've said that all before.

Well, unless, there is a time zone where it is still the 1st, that I don't know about, I'm going to call the entry period closed. and here are our 21 participants.

I have just 4 more pics to send to my Photobucket account, and a few final touches to put on my final draft of the post, and we will be ready to go for voting. (say, no more then an hour, or two.) I was going to wait until midnight tonight, but I know you are all dying to see the pics, and I can't wait to show you. :) (and that just means everyone will get a few more hours of voting time. :) )

Polls can be cheated with.....Posts are a little harder if you dont happen to have a lot of sockpuppet accounts.

How can they be cheated with ? you just set them to allow a single vote per member, the votes can't be changed by anyone.

I remember the Prop contest poll that Rodd.com had last year (?) All you needed to do was to press F5 and you could vote again.(Even Rodd.com told people that it was OK to cheat if they found out how to do it. That whole "contest" Sucked
But i guess that there is some other ways to make Polls and that they might be better.

The refresh thing doesn't work on forums, there's already close to 160 votes to count and still a way to go before the voting closes, if the staff started a poll there'd be no need to count and zero chance of a misscount.

When it comes to the poll. they can be cheated. For some folks, when you say there is no way, that's an invitation to find a way. I know because I one of those kind of people. :lol (well not when it comes to branking the law or anything like that.)

This way it was public, there was no chance of a miss count, because, If you don't like my count, anyone could count for themselves, and see if I was correct, or not.

I'm happy with the way we went on the voting, my only regret is for those that didn't get any votes. But, if folks were not going to vote for those sabers then it wouldn't have mattered what voting system we used. And that's a same because some of the ones that got no votes where very, nice sabers.

the other problem with a poll, is the psychological effect. The polls are always at the top of the thread, before the post with all the pics of the sabers. You might see how the voting is going before you see what your voting for. Plus, I was worried that new members that may have not done online polls before, might be confused by it. (I know, I know, they are easy to do, but I'm sorry, there is no such thing as "idiot proof" these days. ( )

All, in all, a choice was made, we went with it, and now it's done. :)
