The 2009 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest.

I really, really, REALLY, don't want to turn away any entries for not haveing the requirments. I konw it may seem silly, but the rules, are the rules, and everyone else has taken the time to follow them.

Since I can't delete the post, I'll simply note that I should read email before replying in the forums....

Well crap, I didn't make it. I had too much "real life" keeping me from working on my saber. I thought I could hammer it out tonight, if I had one more hour I could do it. I'll post up pics of it when I'm done, just for kicks. I can't wait to see everyone else's sabers.

My thought on the voting is that there are thousands of members here each with a potential vote...and out pittly little votes probably won't count for much in the long run.
I think we should vote for whatever we want be it ours or another or whatever...
One vote per person though.

I am leaning towards the idea of having each of you voting for a saber other then your own.

Most of the time when I see contests like this the participants aren't allowed to vote. Any way is fine with me though. :) Looking forward to seeing them all!

i think builders not being able to vote or are allowed to vote, just not for their own saber is a good idea, otherwise everyone's saber would just get +1 vote (and therefore overall wouldnt make any difference anyway to the scores)

HM, all very good points. Had I had the forethought to have thought of this, I really like the idea of not letting the builders vote at all, but unfortunately I did say in the rules that voting would be open to everyone, weather they made a saber, or not. So.......... This year since I can't change the rules mid stream, I'm going to ask that you each vote for a saber other then your own. (hey I said you get to vote in the rules, but I didn't say for who. ;))

Like it's been pointed out before, if you all just vote for yourselves, it would just add a +1 across the board, witch would make you just as even, as if there had been no votes from you at all. Besides, after seeing the sabers, you may feel that one is better then yours, and then to vote for yourself, when you know some one else should win, would be kind of wrong.

Next time, will make it so the builders don't vote, but this time I think it will be fine if each of you vote for a saber other then your own, that you feel deserves it.

as one of the builders, i wouldnt have a problem with you making it so none of us could vote, but others might get nitpicky about it i suppose

anybody else use an ovulation predictor? :wacko

I did spend waaaay too long examining the OP while in line at the checkout counter. Ended up not buying one as it struck me as more of an 'automatic door admittance control panel' type greeblie. Now the actual EPT was much more interesting. I told my wife to wash that very thoroughly after she is done with it.

That awful (yet slightly true) joke leads me back to the thought that a lot of the stuff I bought specifically to build my lightsaber for this contest was still able to be used for its intended purpose.

While it is true that several items were torn apart and heavily modified, in most other cases it was the packaging, and not the contents, that I was after, and in one case I only needed a few bits out of a package of 50, or so, pieces.

In fact there is one item on my finished saber where I used so little of the actual product that I could probably return it (assuming Dollar Tree even does returns) to the store in good conscience.

There were a few things that I felt bad about wasting just for the packaging, so I was looking around the house for other ways to keep the contents usable, like new containers.

So how many items did you guys end up buying, planning to use it for your lightsaber, and end up not using at all? I have several, some of which might be useful for another project, and most of which will probably end up in the trash. At least there were some that were not meant as measuring cups, but will be put to use the next time I need to pour resin.

I have no problem with an entrants must vote for someone else rule. I said my final saber was better than my original effort but I know there are some real craftsmen, erm.. craftpersons, here and I am under no delusion that mine will win, place, or show.

Also I was able to create 500 sock puppet accounts during this last open enrolement period.

Second that!

But since we're allowed to vote, I will definitely be voting for someone else's saber.

Totally... My 4 receipts say I spent $27 total plus tax. 3 of those items were not intended for my saber (like candy for the kids) and a few were duplicates to allow multiple attempts at a difficult part. However, on the final saber the $$$ value of the items actually used was significantly less than the $20 limit. In fact if the limit had been $10 I'd still be good.

I can't wait for the pictures to come out!!! I'm really looking forward to how my "newbie" shapes up compared all the pros on here. I'm cool with not being able to vote for my own as it's not likely to be "up-there" and it would be morally reprehensible to vote on a saber that wasn't the best, in my opinion.

Good luck everyone

This raises another question though. Do the builders have to vote at all? If a builder doesn't vote isn't he or she in essence taking a vote away from one of competiton? I intend to to vote but just thought I'd ask the question

:) Yeah, you'll be fine. :) Just send them when you can tomorrow. :)

Sent.

As to other points made (but unattributed as it is late and I am too lazy to track down individual names):

As far as voting goes, I have no problem with the "entrants can't vote" sentiment--it makes sense--but I also understand the point of not changing the rules. I know I'll be voting for someone else's (assuming I will be able to pick a favourite), but if I'd have thought about it I'd have gotten my wife to join the forums during open enrollment so my saber would get at least one ;)

As far as items bought and unused, none. Though I did use only one item out of a pack of 57, eight items out of a pack of 132, and less than half an item from a pack of two. Figuring that way, I spent less than $1.50. Wow, this is sounding worse and worse :lol

I see your point, but I can't make people vote, especially when I didn't make that one of the rules to start with. All, in all, we have so many members, and hopefully, so many folks will be voting, that it wont really matter who each of the builder vote for. (but it would still be nice if each of you vote, because it's your rite. :) )
