Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [Completed!]

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Ha a lighter! genius! I'd be worried it'd light something on fire but that worked really well!

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

My buddy Josh came over today for a bite to eat. He is about my size, so before we went out for food I forced him to don the power armor and let me see it walking around. It's really awesome to see it 3rd person. I was like a proud papa.

Here are some pics I managed to take when I wasn't being giddy.

I had the same thought. I would be giddy to get into that suit.

I don't know if someone else already asked this but what is the little washer for on the right leg?

Its just a foam ring added for embellishment. It has no purpose. It's white so it sticks out like a sore thumb right now.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I have another test video for everyone. I made a number of small improvements. Firstly to the boots. The base of my stilt was lengthened, the boot body was given extra height to hide my shoes. I also changed up my thigh rigging a bit and added padding to the interior of the thighs to make the leg movement more natural.

In the works are refining the chest rigging and fixing the gaps in the cod nearest the thighs. I need to add some padding to help keep the chest from climbing up to my chin due to the added weight of the backpack.

Enjoy the video.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

Detail work this morning. I fixed the gap between my thigh armor and my butt. That should look much better now. I also added a banner detail to the right shin and carved a small skull for my backpack. Sorry for everyone so eager to see some paint, I can't stop improving things!

Whos got 2 thumbs and shiney new ABS purity seals? THIS GUY!

I drew up some purity seals in 3D and printed them out of red ABS plastic on the 3D printer. A light bath in some acetone to melt them a bit and BAM! Tough as nails purity seals. Sorry for my enthusiasm, I am slowly learning 3D, and I am pretty excited about how successful this was.

I might make a few different ones. I could easily make some with chapter insignias, etc.

Acetone melts away all those pesky lines.

Great idea with the acetone dip. I never would've thought of that. :thumbsup

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

How does the acetone bath deal with really sharp edges? For stuff like the skull it seems perfect, but I've always been afraid of doing it since most of my 3D printed parts are rather sharp and angular.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

The purity seal is magic. Any chance of getting it onto Thingverse?

Cheers,

If you want to keep your edges super square this might not be the best idea. I guess it depends on how precise you need the part to be. You could do it carefully and still hold a shape well. I did this one with a brush and found it pretty easy to control, but I will be using vapor in the future.

Re: Sylgian's 40K Space Marine [WIP]

I've been watching this through Lexicanum and therpf now for a few days (lurk lurk). As someone prepping to go down this same path myself, I realized I have a question!

When you ordered your Foam, what dimensions and thickness did you purchase? Looking at the website you listed, there are some decent price differences. And while it looks like you got 1/2 inch, 3/8 is easy to misjudge.

FOR RUSS! AND THE ALLFATHER!

Yeah that's what I assumed.

Good luck with the vapor method, I lack an adequately ventilated area to attempt that in!
