SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

Ahh only 118 signatures needed left on the petition!
I'm beyond curious to see what they respond to these guys sending it.

Ultimately they have something that works. They're getting viewers and even all the costumers that are getting riled up over this will still tune in every week just to see what they do this time and get pissed off all over again. They'll never change the format to one where they show everyone building their costumes and then compete because to your average Dick and Jane, that's boring as hell. Drama and sex sells. The fact that the show is pissing people off is probably causing them to salivate because drama is delicious.

Also, this show isn't really geared to us, to this specific demo.

If you take just about any Sci-fi con, except maybe Dragoncon, the % of total attendees versus attendees wearing costumes is what- 90% regular to 10% cosplayers? 80% to 20%?

Now think about how many Cons there are each year, and the attendance for each one and the total yearly Con attendance.

There are more people who are 'familiar' with Cosplay but don't dress up personally or really know that much about it versus costumers who go to Cons.

The show's demographic is non-cosplayers and 'regular' people who read about Sci-fi Cons in the local paper.

People who have no real idea what making costumes involves.

I've said my beef with this show with friends/on other posts. It's just... disingenious.

And alot of the hobby is. There are a literal TON of people in this hobby that treat others like crap, beat them down, have unneeded competition between them. It's ridiculous. Too many people already have an inflated head. If you have someone going around crowning themselves with false titles, that doesn't help the problem.

Yes, yes, I'm the Mayor of Model Airplane Painting!

You madam are a liar! I am in fact the Mayor of Model Airplane Painting and I've never even seen you at the meetings! :lol Seriously though, most costumers here seem more than happy to help each other out. Either that or the RPF has friendlier people, I don't know.

Yes, half of it's SyFy's editing, but most of it IS real life. Just look at alot these girl's portfolios and you'll witness it. Is there anything wrong with being sexy? No, but there's also beauty in mystery. I guess I'm one of the few who thinks a fully clothed piece, that has had months of beading, embroidery and sewing into it, is far more interesting than a boob-centered costume. THAT'S more costume porn to me.

Part of me says if you can pull it off and you aren't self-conscious then go for it. As a guy, yeah that's cool, but I think most of us are just amazed if an attractive girl is into the same thing. I'd be just as impressed if you made an accurate version of Princess Leia's Endor outfit!

I'm not into cosplaying, and if I made a costume it would more likely be for Halloween or to display on a mannequin. I always check the costume section though because some of the stuff being done is really impressive.

Alright sir, PUT ON YOUR FIGHTING TROUSERS! THERE'S ONLY ROOM FOR ONE!

:lol

No but these forums are full of supportive people. But there are trolls and asshats looming in the darkness :p!

It is just a TV show with scripted drama and fake time limits to keep the attention of the masses, who generally have the attention span of a gnat. As a costume designer/special FX artist I wish they would show more of the actual building process, but we are in the minority as far as viewers go. I would rather watch this than most other shows. Faceoff is even worse with he drama BS and stupid judges. I also love Making Monsters and Monsterman was cool. I am just glad there are such shows.

Also, I was a bit disgusted by the Poison Ivy cosplayer's (and they were right, she's no cosplayer, she is a model and a poor one at that) mother. She should have just put her foot down on that costume. What is that girl, 16? Even one of the other contestants pointing out she had clear camel toe going on with that costume. That's a girl who has realized that her sexuality is getting her attention and she's whoring it out as much as possible. The "haters gonna hate" **** shows just how immature she is. Her mom should just pull her from costuming if she's going to be doing that. When she's 18 and doesn't live at home, she can do whatever she want, but that mom needs a reality check, she's the mother, her daughter does not tell her what to do.

I believe Monika is 20. While I agree she is quite immature (seeing her on TV confirmed some pretty low opinions I've had about her for quite a while), in the end it's her body, and her costume, so she can make it however she wants.

What I found silly is how the show focused on the fact that it was either sex appeal, OR craftsmanship. Why can't it be both? It's perfectly possible to make a well constructed, sexy costume.

As Volpin said earlier, the deadlines for costumes seem a bit tight. I was finding the costumes pretty lacklustre, but from what I could tell the Portland and ECC conventions were only a week apart. It takes me months to build a good costume, and these guys have to do it in 1-2 weeks. It's nuts; no wonder the quality isn't on par with what we expect from the RPF.

I missed episode 1 and caught 2 during my recent hospital stay. I have to say that there's not much to like about this show. YaYa Han comes across as a total bitch. It is clear she is upset about that jessica girl being so popular because of bobbie costumes, but that is exactly what YYH does. She seems to have somehow made a career out of a hobby and can survive off making costumes from crappy anime. Good for her I say.

I didn't really like any of the competitors, except for the girl who made Lady Deetz/Sandworm. I thought it was creative. She seemed to have the best view of how to to treat others, even 300lb superman. She seemed to be in it all for fun. Costumes is not some super-important, taken-so-seriously hobby that it needs to have ambassadors and councils. The Tron legacy girl could have been less appreciative of her boyfriend, but it would have taken some effort.

And the two that wanted to make a career out of it...get real. Steam Trooper was STUPID. Just because you put some goggles and brass on something doesn't make it steam punk. Hellgirl was cool, but nothing revolutionary IMO.

Being that it's reality tv, most of these costumes were made 1-2 years prior. With clever editing, it just looks like they're making the costume. They show you a rolled up sheet of Worbla, someone sewing what looks to be the similar fabric, messing around with bits...

Then POOF! Costume.

While I wouldn't put it past them to do something like that...particularly with the stuff that wasn't shown on screen (they only show them making 1 piece of each costume...ie: the only thing they showed of Hellgirl was casting the hand. Not the body suit, the skirt, the wig, etc, etc) it still doesn't expain the lacklustre costumes. I'm honestly surprised that they would compete in the master category at a convention with simple costumes like that.

Just about all the people in the show are capable of creating much better costumes than we've seen them make for this show, especially for the most recent episode where all the costumes weren't really that detailed. I feel like they deliberately chose easy costumes to make for the earlier episodes. Maybe they were trying to spend more time on more extravagant costumes for bigger conventions in later in the show? Who knows.

On a completely different note, since this hasn't been brought up in the thread yet (as far as I know), have you seen what the show's executive producer Mark Cronin said about male cosplay?

“Male characters tend to be simpler – lots of body armor and weaponry and spandex and capes… They’re usually nowhere near as interesting and intricate, or sexy and cool, as the costumes worn by the women. And, let’s face it, female sexuality is a big part of comic-book art and a big element in the Con world.”

I feel like it just goes to show that he still knows nothing about cosplay, even after producing 6 episodes about it. I find this statement, and the lack of decent male representation in the art completely offensive (and including 1 amateur male cosplayer as an afterthought that doesn't interact with the rest of the cast members doesn't count).

On another note, did anyone else laugh as hard as I did when they showed the "harness" Hell Girl was using to hold her tail, after mentioning that she just had to "turn it around?"

Remember earlier when I mentioned that site full of naked cosplayers?

I'm pretty sure that harness came from her nightstand, based on what I've seen of her.

I hope it got a thorough cleaning before it was used for the costume then. haha

...and this website sounds both fascinating AND terrifying to me, like a car crash involving a clown car.

Nick,

I caught that one too... I wasn't sure if I heard it right until the close up shot.

I have to admit though, it was definitely a clever solution. If she hadn't cut the hole in her skirt so large it would have been absolutely perfect.

.....Now that you mention it, I think it's pretty clever. :lol I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever do a costume with a tail.

I had a good chuckle but then started wondering if she already owned it or bought it for the costume.

I'm going to watch the upcoming one from MegaCon to see how the behind the scenes and actual contest compare to what I saw sitting in the audience and will maybe call it quits after that.

Even if she didn't have it before, she has it now for whatever purposes she deems fit. Hopefully she wouldn't just leave it on her nightstand like James Kenobi 1138 hinted at...might be a bit of a shocker to see -- say -- on a first date. :lol

I'd actually be really curious to hear your feedback then on the next episode, since for the first time we'll have a true third party opinion to tell just how much editing is going into the contests themselves. (Like whether or not they are sweetening the crowd reactions in post production)
