SyFy's Heroes of Cosplay

Really, the best people to make a costume/cosplay show out of IS the people on the RPF.
Y'all's are the most talented and kind people I have ever met. :I

Cosplay community is just full of horrors, meanwhile ;___;

Stick around, sometimes this place will surprise you.

I enjoy watching the homemade you tube music videos of cosplay more than this show. If they documented a couple cosplayers building their suits from concept to finished product, that would be something to watch. I like to hear the back stories and see the amount of hard work that gets put into costumes...much like many of the RPF builds I read. Those are the people I consider "heroes" of cosplay. How do these people afford to go from con to con failing at contests? I say rename this show "Failures of Cosplay" to match the content of the show. The judging is such a joke. You have YaYa asking people how they built it like she has never tried that before. The other judges are just there to fill the seats. I hope they kill the series quickly.

The show is embarrassing to me.
The people on the show do not represent me.

I love making costumes, because they are a great way to show my artistic skills.
When people want to see a painting, or sculpture they have to go to it. With costumes the art comes to them.

I have just recently got into competing in cosplay contest. I have had some success, but all while staying outside of the cosplay community.
I suppose that is because I frequent this forum instead of cosplay boards.

This show has me reconsidering the hobby.
Maybe I will pick up sculpting models?

Oh yeah.. Then Ghost Shark shall haunt ya...WWWWHHHHHHOOOOOOO :devil

I didn't even think this was a real thing, I thought we were just making up really dumb ideas for other things they could use besides tornadoes, snow, etc.

But
Lo and behold
It is on my damn tv

What on earth

managed to watch the 2nd episode last night.

in the end i was really willing victoria's dress to work.. damn loose connections, i know that problem all too well :D she really does give her other half some stick though; comes across as quite nasty on the show. i'd bet she's no where near that bad really.

jesse's costume didn't impress again, nothing really ground breaking there. (not bashing his efforts at all.. never would, but if he wants to set himself up as a prop builder/costume maker he really needs something special)

and you know what.. as much as i like monika, i do agree with the judge that she didn't really get into any character when she walked up. exactly as yaya said, she just walked up, struck a pose and job done.

strange seeing riddle in real life though.. she seems sweet, almost vulnerable in her passions yet so powerful and strong in the photos i've seen.

one major bugbear i have with the show now though is yaya. i don't know if she's really like that or the show hams it up but man, does she seem to be really pompus and self righteous. as if its up to her to decide who's allowed to do what in cosplay. :/

that whole 'talk' with monika.. i had myself thinking 'sod off, let her do what she wants to do'

as well as the jessica bashing. just no need for it. jessica said on her page she turned down the show to avoid the drama and gets sucked into it regardless.

the 'issue' of becoming elitist is so raw at the moment and this kind of bashing does people no favours.

this all said, i'm sure its hammed up for the show and made out to make it sound worse than it actually is, but unfortunately this is the impression i'm left with.

regardless, i'm interested in watching it. i'm pretty new to finding out all about this scene so its still interesting to me, but i do know to take it all with a pinch of salt :)

...now if only he'd make more videos of him drunk in his workshop. THAT is the show that SyFy should have made! :lol

That video was what finally convinced me that I could do molding and casting which in turn led me to do8ng other things.

And I also liked Chloe. A lot. She was doing it at least partially for fun. I agreed with her that people can dress up as whatever and whoever they want. But you should at least be aware that some people will make fun of a fat Spiderman or anorexic Lara Croft. Although I think in the new game she is supposed to look like a real woman, but you get my point.

Sent from my Etch A Sketch.

Chloe strikes me as someone who has everything handed to her because of her looks. Of course she's happy.

I think we just don't buy into our own hype so much.

Like, ZOMG, made this unique costume I am the chosen one, or ZOMG, I am the Joint Chief of Cosplay.

I've said my beef with this show with friends/on other posts. It's just... disingenious.

And alot of the hobby is. There are a literal TON of people in this hobby that treat others like crap, beat them down, have unneeded competition between them. It's ridiculous. Too many people already have an inflated head. If you have someone going around crowning themselves with false titles, that doesn't help the problem.

Yes, yes, I'm the Mayor of Model Airplane Painting!

I'm the Duchess of Crochet!

*major eye roll*

Yeah, yeah it's a reality tv show. With all the tripe out there on tv, why in the HELL would you want to exacerbate the issue?? Granted parts of the show...and a very small part, show case amazing craftsmanship, the PBS documentary really showcased that best. No drama, no competitiveness. Just people working in their homes. That's the jist of it. Of course the crazy, getting ready in a hotel room is a perfect representation of what really goes on, but the competitions aren't.

Turning the hobby into a sport is kinda stupid. I get that people love to compete, that's cool, but alot of people don't. Having a show surrounding the competitiveness in costuming, like I said, isn't really helping the problem. That's what people have beef with the most, I think. Too many people are getting down trodden by the competitiveness in making and wearing costumes. Instead of seeing a wonderfully put together costume and thinking:

"Oh man that's beautiful! I really want to learn how to do that, what an inspiration!"

Too many people are really thinking: "That bitch, I made that too, and now I have unneeded jealousy and hate! RAGE!QUIT! THIS IS THE THUNDERDOME NOW."

Granted that's been a gradual shift for the past 10 years in conventions anyway, but now people don't know the difference between a stage and a con floor.

And the dinner where they're slightly bashing people? Chloe was the only one who got it right. Who cares wtf you look like! I look like literally NONE of the characters I make costumes of. I'm not their body type, height, eye color....wtf ever. Don't care. I want to create a costume for the sake of creating it. The learning, (and grieving) process that goes into it.

I get that some kids might be excited to get into costume making by watching the show, but they're also going to be looking at a few false idols on the show. Again, what alot of people fear, is that kids with costuming aspirations will see what some of these girls are saying and think: "Well I have to act like them, have fake boobs and center all my costumes around sex appeal."

Yes, half of it's SyFy's editing, but most of it IS real life. Just look at alot these girl's portfolios and you'll witness it. Is there anything wrong with being sexy? No, but there's also beauty in mystery. I guess I'm one of the few who thinks a fully clothed piece, that has had months of beading, embroidery and sewing into it, is far more interesting than a boob-centered costume. THAT'S more costume porn to me.

"Oh god...look at that cartridge pleating. UNF."

Another thing that really bothered me, was the girl doing Merida, that had to go work out....to portray a chubby teen??

Just...that's not the reason why people protested the "sexified" Merida several months back. Of course it's good to be healthy and work out and what not....but really? REALLY??? That was...I just....can't.

Anyway...besides the point, I still don't like the word "cosplay". I still associate it with anime, as that's how I learned about the word. Maybe that's a huge reason I don't like the show, either? Eh.

I'm not doubting the talent of some of the people on this show, they've clearly displayed it. But you can't sit here and keep blaming it being a reality show, and that the editors are at fault.

You signed the contract. You can't tell me you've seen at least one reality tv show. You knew what to expect. And despite what they edit together, what came out of your mouth, came out.

I don't know you from Adam, and I'm not watching the show, so I don't get a lot of the specific comments about the show itself....but that was awesome.

:thumbsup

:cheers

So I thought I'd give the show another chance, and sit through the second episode, after letting it sit on the DVR for a few days.

Man, what is up with these people? Maybe I'm missing something - is YaYa supposed to some sort of ambassador between the costumers and the "normals", or some "Queen of the Cosplayers"? I don't get the reverence or fear, that the other costumers have for her. She can't fire you from cosplaying. She can't tell you what to do. She's 1 of however many judges are on the panel. At best, she's 33.33% of your concern. Shouldn't an "ambassador", be spreading the "awesomeness of cosplay" to non-cosplaying people? By hanging around and judging cosplay contests, you're preaching to the choir. It's like handing out sales flyers, to employees of your own store, but not to customers outside. Most cosplayers already agree with your concept of cosplay - that's why they're there.

Maybe it's the editing, but why did she try and throw Victoria under the bus with the "who made your costume?" question - the answer, to which, she already knew? If you're going to railroad the competitors, then maybe it's best you don't have contact with them, prior to the contest. How do you consider yourself an unbiased judge, at that point?

Though, I did enjoy the complete hypocrisy of YaYa being mad at Monika and Jessica, for dressing sexy. Let's be honest, your booby costumes made you queen of the dress-up nerds. Don't get mad if others start stealing your thunder by using the same tricks.

Now, just a question about the show, in general. Shouldn't the producers have found competitors that routinely place, or win, these contests? Right now, from what I can remember, in 6 possible placings (over the 2 episodes), only one hero (or pair of heroes, to be accurate), has even placed. That's a 16.6 win percentage. What kind of Heroes are they, exactly? Seems like a little more homework on the producer's part, would have made for a more accurate title. Or change the title to "People of cosplay - who whine more than they work".

I think the thing to consider here is that their work timetable has been severely truncated in order to generate the costumes for the chosen conventions. I don't know anything about the contract, but I did work in marketing and advertising for a while and I can imagine there was a lot of this in the contracts they signed. Things like "Must complete X new costumes for X conventions on X dates" and they have about 2 weeks to toss together new work.

Taking the scheduling into consideration it's difficult to place at all when you're rolling up next to people who have spent weeks or months on their costumes and only compete in one convention. 2 weeks is barely enough time for some paints to fully cure, let alone prepare a competition-leveling costume.

I would imagine from a production standpoint this faster scheduling allows for greater stress, greater drama, more juicy bits for TV. Jesse's vacforming circuit breaker issue is something I've done in the past too, but it's also something you figure out the first time you run your machine. Force people into an immediate turnaround then film the resulting chaos. Makes sense, really.

Whaaaat, no way.
Really? :O

You have no idea........

There used to be so many d**ks and a**holes on this board we didn't hardly have and female members because of all the baiting, trolling, arguing, and knock-out/drag-outs.

It's actually much better now.

I think the description of first episode is funny...

Six of the world's most innovative and passionate cosplayer get ready for Portland's first cosplay competition.

In the world??? Yeah right!

yeah, i laughed at the world renowned part.....

i only knew three people in the first episode....and i knew one of them because some people mistaken her for being a male in drag.....
