Re: Sucker Punch
Have any women chimed in on this yet? What is their point of view on the film? The way I see it, it was marketed as a guy film and failed but I think in the end what we got was a chick flick! :lol
From a girls POV... my bf actually didn't want to see it and I've been excited since the first trailer. I've always been an anime, sci fi, fantasy, costuming, videogame, geeky type-girl and so I thought I automatically fell into the main demographic for the movie. And I borderline hated it.
The opening scene was freaking INTENSE and I thought it was going to be a great movie. But that was about the only good part in it.
I really disliked the double-introduction. The real world intro into the Lennox House was kinda creepy... and then they were like " scratch that, we need a more interesting, colourful, girl friendly ( as in, appealing to girls... obviously not more friendly to the girl characters ) story... let's redo it as a Moulin Rouge ". It felt like as opposed to these multi-level fantasies, they just kept changing their minds or switching ideas or just had too many and wanted to use them all so it ended up a big, spliced up bunch of sequences that were just annoying to assume what actually happened here and there, inside and outside of fantasies and how they correlated.
The fact that the 2nd level sequences were in only Babydolls mind when she danced and apparently hypnotized people with her gyrating was just stupid. ( Though, I can TOTALLY imagine an amazing masquerade skit that's incredibly intense and upon the Babydoll cosplayer starting to dance, she busts out with this
:lol Right? )
The action sequences were good but they were just... there. Nothing seemed to connect. If I had seen each portion of the action parts on youtube, I'd think they were awesome but they were just too abstract in the movie.
I get what they were trying to do with the whole thing, but I think it was done too carelessly. I didn't like that it all connected to the real world but that no answers were actually given as to what happened ( other than everything Babydoll did looked freaking insane and spur of the moment acts of violent outrage ... which they very well may have been... I guess...? ). Again, I know that everything does connect, and I like movies that make you think, but I feel like they didn't know how to show it themselves so they left it to us to make it up because they didn't feel like doing their jobs.
Also, I hated that bascially ALL of the characters had no development. In particular, Amber was a wimp, Blondie was an idiot, there was really no reason for Rocket to... you know. And the whole intense opening scene was for naught considering she was 'never the main character' ( What? Wtf? ) and her arc...well... basically there was none ( like the others ) and so she finished off with nothing. Quite literally.
And did anyone notice the actual lack of dialogue? It seemed like each character ( except Blue ... who just kept reminding me of Bernard the elf from 'The Santa Clause ' [
this guy ] ) only had 4 lines. That being said, the dialogue that WAS in it was horribly bland, dry, and uninteresting. Totally boring.
... And I didn't like that she killed the baby dragon. I really, REALLY didn't like that part. Or the momma. They didn't do anything wrong!!! They could've at least made them insanely ugly monsters instead of cute dragons fumbling all over the place. D:
And I think that even if it had been post converted into 3D it would have been cooler. At least more entertaining. The fight with the robots and shattering glass everywhere ... it felt like it was supposed to be 3D. And I think it may have been the only redeeming quality of the movie ( except for the costumes ) because it would have made it have some novelty.
Oh, and there were too many closeups and shaky cam to even appreciate the costumes. *rage*
And that is a woman's point of view.

And I wanted to like it. I really, really, really wanted to really, really like it.
