Sucker Punch SPOILERS!

Re: Sucker Punch

gotta admit it looked like a jab at those of us that found something in the film to admire. There are discussions at length on films here that are far worse than Sucker punch! :lol

Nope, no jabs here....To each their own.....

You liked it and i DIDNT. Im not going to say you are wrong...every-one has their own opinion....

just for now on, any movie you comment on, I wont take you seriously and your view will have no merit because you liked this crappy film ;)

Just basically saying to me, that this movie isnt on the same level as Inception...

Very good and I concur. I admit, its tough to live with the fact that I liked this film... perhaps I shouldn't admit to that in public! I'm not worried about my opinions not having merit... I'm the first to admit I have no relevance! it was not great but it was fun.. I went in with low expections and it met those expectations precisely :lol ... and certainly no Inception!

Re: Sucker Punch

Have any women chimed in on this yet? What is their point of view on the film? The way I see it, it was marketed as a guy film and failed but I think in the end what we got was a chick flick! :lol

From a girls POV... my bf actually didn't want to see it and I've been excited since the first trailer. I've always been an anime, sci fi, fantasy, costuming, videogame, geeky type-girl and so I thought I automatically fell into the main demographic for the movie. And I borderline hated it.

The opening scene was freaking INTENSE and I thought it was going to be a great movie. But that was about the only good part in it.

I really disliked the double-introduction. The real world intro into the Lennox House was kinda creepy... and then they were like " scratch that, we need a more interesting, colourful, girl friendly ( as in, appealing to girls... obviously not more friendly to the girl characters ) story... let's redo it as a Moulin Rouge ". It felt like as opposed to these multi-level fantasies, they just kept changing their minds or switching ideas or just had too many and wanted to use them all so it ended up a big, spliced up bunch of sequences that were just annoying to assume what actually happened here and there, inside and outside of fantasies and how they correlated.

The fact that the 2nd level sequences were in only Babydolls mind when she danced and apparently hypnotized people with her gyrating was just stupid. ( Though, I can TOTALLY imagine an amazing masquerade skit that's incredibly intense and upon the Babydoll cosplayer starting to dance, she busts out with this
spiderman-dance.gif
:lol Right? )

The action sequences were good but they were just... there. Nothing seemed to connect. If I had seen each portion of the action parts on youtube, I'd think they were awesome but they were just too abstract in the movie.

I get what they were trying to do with the whole thing, but I think it was done too carelessly. I didn't like that it all connected to the real world but that no answers were actually given as to what happened ( other than everything Babydoll did looked freaking insane and spur of the moment acts of violent outrage ... which they very well may have been... I guess...? ). Again, I know that everything does connect, and I like movies that make you think, but I feel like they didn't know how to show it themselves so they left it to us to make it up because they didn't feel like doing their jobs.

Also, I hated that bascially ALL of the characters had no development. In particular, Amber was a wimp, Blondie was an idiot, there was really no reason for Rocket to... you know. And the whole intense opening scene was for naught considering she was 'never the main character' ( What? Wtf? ) and her arc...well... basically there was none ( like the others ) and so she finished off with nothing. Quite literally.

And did anyone notice the actual lack of dialogue? It seemed like each character ( except Blue ... who just kept reminding me of Bernard the elf from 'The Santa Clause ' [ this guy ] ) only had 4 lines. That being said, the dialogue that WAS in it was horribly bland, dry, and uninteresting. Totally boring.

... And I didn't like that she killed the baby dragon. I really, REALLY didn't like that part. Or the momma. They didn't do anything wrong!!! They could've at least made them insanely ugly monsters instead of cute dragons fumbling all over the place. D:

And I think that even if it had been post converted into 3D it would have been cooler. At least more entertaining. The fight with the robots and shattering glass everywhere ... it felt like it was supposed to be 3D. And I think it may have been the only redeeming quality of the movie ( except for the costumes ) because it would have made it have some novelty.

Oh, and there were too many closeups and shaky cam to even appreciate the costumes. *rage*

And that is a woman's point of view. :) And I wanted to like it. I really, really, really wanted to really, really like it. :(

Re: Sucker Punch

We ALMOST left after an hour, but decided to stay. Just one of the worst movies I've ever seen in a theatre. Just shockingly bad.

My God, just..... just wow. Not as bad as Attack of the Clones though! But only "not as bad" by a tiny margin.

Re: Sucker Punch

Actually, I think the movie would have been much better of they had taken out the entire "real world" intro to the asylum. Basically as soon as she walks in the door it changes to the bordello and we don't actually see the nasty, decaying asylum until she's been lobotomized. THAT would have been a cool twist ending, if we hadn't even known that it was an asylum, but we just thought her stepfather sold her into slavery or something until the end. Fan edit, anybody?

I'm going out to dinner now, but I do have a review to post, and yes, you do have a point.

Re: Sucker Punch

I liked it. It probably helped that the reviews I glanced through made it sound as if the movie was just terrible.

Yeah, it is a lot of style of substance. Yeah, it is more than a bit of mindless fun. Sometimes that's all I need... the story held together enough. Lots of flash, lots of wow, lots of fun. Waaaaaaaaaaay better than Inception.

Over time, I can see this movie developing quite the cult following. Just had that kind of feel to it.

I too, thought Rocket was the 'it girl' of the bunch... she had a certain panache. I was shocked when I checked IMdb to see that was Jena Malone. Jena 'Gretchen Ross' Malone of Donnie Darko. Wow.

Loved most of the soundtrack, too... but, when you do a cover of the Pixies 'Where is my Mind,' along with 'Sweet Dreams,' and 'White Rabbit' - well, that just equals win.

Agreed. Normally, even though I'm a female, I would like most of the things in this movie. But it was underwhelming for the most part. I kept thinking it was going to turn into some weird musical.

Also, you know how I know the dialog must have been written by a man? Because women don't refer to other women as "you guys". Well, none that I know anyway. And they said it a lot to each other in the movie.

Re: Sucker Punch

If you have ever seen the movie 'Franklyn', I thought it was similar. The real-world/fantasy world part. Interesting to say the least. Once you..idk.. 'get it'.. it makes a lot more sense.
Not horrible, not the best. See it in theaters though. I couldn't imagine watching it at home, even on my 42".

Re: Sucker Punch

I haven't seen it. It only opens next week here in Australia. =( . Keep it coming guys!

Re: Sucker Punch

Well, I just got back from watching it. I gotta say I went in not expecting too much after reading some of the reviews and was pleasantly surprised. It's not the greatest movie of all time but I think i'll keep my ticket and get the DVD. Does it need fixing? sure it does, there's a lot of things I think that could've been done different but c'est la vie.
The visuals I loved, concept I dug, execution wasn't all there. I mean hell, Babydoll didn't talk for at least 15-20 minutes in the film; and she was all we saw for that time frame. Matter of fact, there wasn't a whole lot of dialogue at all.
Fell in love with rocket though, kinda hard not to.

I took the three fantasies as this:
Nazi Imperial Soldiers and General - Her manifestation of her stepfather and the minions he gets to do the dirty work.

The dragon is referenced to be Baby-Dolls feelings toward her helpless sister and mother, and coming to terms with it all.

The faceless robots to be the orderly's. They are of no importance and don't deserve a face.

Just my two cents.

oh and Risu, that would've been a great approach to the movie.

Re: Sucker Punch

Who ever posted that they got sucker punched was right. We saw it yesterday killing time before we had to get to the airport.

I swear this movies target was the Anime/cosplay/12YO girl/Sci-fi nerd. Anything out of this demographic will probably want to walk out of it. My wife said if they actually show her dancing, were out of here. I had to agree.

The main characters acting was horrible, period, painful to watch. thank goodness she only had a few lines. 300, Watchmen, Sin city....good flicks. Sucker Punch, sucked. Way too many 'groan moments'.

Re: Sucker Punch

If there were ever a tongue-in-cheek, over the top action film. About a squad of hot chicks in power armor fighting giant radioactive 'communist' monsters, set in the 1950s with a psychobilly soundtrack...I would be so there!

But...

From all of the trailers I've seen 'SuckerPunch' looks dour, humorless, and tedious. :p

Re: Sucker Punch

I'm still looking forward to seeing it despite what folks have said. I may have to wait to see it on Netflix since I can't make it to the theater very often but I'm definitely looking forward to it. I don't get the hate some of you folks seem to have for Snyder's work but whatever... I loved 300 and Watchmen and I think he'll do a good job on Superman too.

Re: Sucker Punch

Go in to the flic with teh right frame of mind and you will be golden.
I saw 300 expecting nothing but action and some cool shots that's exactly what I got. I went into sucker punch with the exact same mentality and I left very happy. I went into Paul expecting fart jokes and some brit humor and a geekout fest and it delivered.

Keep your expectations in check and you are fine.

I have certain directors I see for certain things. JohnCarpenter (campy fun horror), Ridly Scott (great looking scifi), Pete Jackson (epic sweeping fantasy), Zach Snyder (fun crazy action). I go to each for thier respective specialties. And for the most part I'm not disappointed.

Zach Snyder is no Ridley Scott but man he can make a frame of film look amazing. And I'd put sucker puch up against any of the Matrix sequels which blew chunks in my book.

And at least Sucker Punch was an original idea.

Re: Sucker Punch

i wasnt pleased with this movie at all. I enjoyed 300 and like Watchmen. It seems as though Snyder keep using the same type of super slow motion then fast frame action(is this all he knows?). It didnt really work for me in this film.
