I might just be old fashioned, but when I sit in a theater to watch a movie I feel everything I need to know to enjoy it should be on the screen. It could be the opening crawl, spoken dialog or watching actual events unfold. Having to resort to to auxiliary materials for back stories and explanations is lazy film making (plus a cynical marketing technique to force fans to buy the other crap in addition to the ticket prices). It was annoying with the rebooted Trek and seems to be a trend now.
If you don't have enough time in the movie to tell us what we need, then trim some of the extra scenes which do not contribute to the plot (cough cough Canto Bight) and make room for it.
