Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

I never thought I'd ever say it,....but I'm not excited about Star Wars at all, the new stuff just isn't for me

Marvel is a different matter

Funny, I'm exactly the opposite. While I'm excited to see Endgame. I'm not as excited as I feel I should be. Episode 9 on the other hand. I can hardly contain myself, and I haven't even seen a trailer.

I'll see Endgame when it comes out on Bluray. I'm not watching Episode 9 at all, at least not until Rifftrax takes a crack at it.

I've gotta say, & I never thought I'd say this... but I've got to be sold on (or talked into) seeing this new Star Wars movie.
I literally have no interest in seeing it.
I am very much looking forward to seeing End Game, however.

I do have to say, that the best thing I've read while going over the last few days was NeoRutty ranting on Rose hickys. :D HAA!!! Just brilliant!!
& I wholeheartedly agree... we definitely don't need no Rose hickys!!!

Many share that sentiment about Episode IX.

EXACTLY where I am! Marvel has yet to make a bomb for me. Yes, some of the movies are better than others but even the lower rated movies are still so enjoyable! What a time to be alive to see all of these Marvel characters come to life on the big screen :)

Star Wars, well it has just not done it for me. I like them well enough and watch them but I am just not feeling it. I have yet to even see Solo. If you would have told me that there would be a day when I did not see a Star Wars movie I would have laughed at you! Episode 9 I will see but out of a sense of obligation not because I care one bit about what is going to happen and that is just plain sad.

I use my kids to gauge the excitement building up....I have a 19 year old son reared on the Prequels & the Originals...I have a 12 year old daughter who loves the Originals but laughs at the Prequels....she loved Ep 7....has loads of Funko Pop! Figures of the characters....they both loved Rogue One....but after The Last Jedi they both consider Star Wars to be naff & uncool....my daughter rolls her eyes when I mention Ep 9
Neither of them has seen the Solo movie despite my efforts & recommendations that I think it’s alright

We have Avengers Endgame booked for Thurs 25th....I have booked the day off & will pick my daughter up from school going straight to the Cinema....

Personally Star Wars has slipped into the traditional sequel syndrome....like the Jaws, Alien, Superman, Terminator, Friday 13th & Halloween films.....they used to be something original & special, now they rely on nostalgic callbacks

I am going to see Episode 9 in a theater- no question about that.
I have been disappointed by the new films, but I still find them enjoyable to watch.
It will likely be a hot mess considering the corner Episode 8 put them in, but I want to see it on a BIG screen. Regardless of how the story works out, these films do fill the screen with amazing visuals and I do not want to settle for the home experience the first viewing.

My son really wants to see Endgame when it hits the theaters- considering the last one was only half a movie I want to also.

I'll see it in theater because why not, after all I did enjoy TLJ even with all its flaws and I'm curious to see what JJ does, even if by the looks (or the leaks) of it I fear I'll end up in the haters side of this "divised fandom" nonsense :rolleyes:but the truth is the ending of TLJ, plotwise, left me with no interest on seeing what's next... I mean, broadly speaking it's still the Empire rules, the rebels are scarce and we know with hope and the Force they will prevail in the end, no big surprise or big questions to answer other than will Luke return as a Force ghost, will Phasma reappear, will the graflex be repaired with a C-clamp or just some gorilla tape... minor details :D
But specially I'll see it because it's the last with John Williams in it, and I think that deserves some quality sound equipment I don't have at home, even just to see if he leaves with a bang or a half-felt meh

Sadly even Williams score apart from perhaps two or three new themes has been sorely lacking in this new trilogy. Even the prequels got that right. I'm not even sad about my indifference towards the completion of the entire saga and this trilogy. They chose to engage with their fan base in a way that caused backlash by many. If their new movies continue to tank, then that's on them.

I'm probably not going to make any friends saying this.......

But all these people, here, YouTube, and elsewhere on the Internet saying they aren't going to episode 9. I have to wonder why? Sure they didn't like TLJ or whatever the case may be. But a fan, a true fan. Would go to the next film regardless. A true fan sticks with his or her franchise through thick and thin, through the highs and lows. They love their franchise. But it would seem that for so many that love is very very conditional. At which point one wonders if they ever truly loved it? Because to truly love something is to look past its flaws, it's shortcomings. Look at The Phantom Menace, it wasn't a great film. Yet the fans still went to Attack of the Clones, which was a worse film. And still the fans went to Revenge of the Sith. The Clone Wars film was less then stellar, and Ahsoka was very much maligned. But the fans stuck with it, and where awarded with some of the best Star Wars content. We Star Wars fans may not have had as many "bad apples" as the Star Trek fans have had, but we've had our fair share. What has changed? Why abandon your franchise now?

I plan to see Ep 9 in the theater but I sadly don't feel the excitement for it that I do compared to Avengers End Game. I'm much more invested in those characters than Kylo/Rey/Hux/Finn, etc. I've seen every Star Wars movie opening night/weekend since I could drive and always had a lot of hope, excitement and enthusiasm for each. Episodes 7 & 8 have dampened that but I wouldn't want to miss seeing Ep 9 on a big screen, although it may be just a week or so later.

If you look at the success of the previous trilogies you will recognize a scheme: Part 1 is the most successful. Part 2 sees a drop in earnings. Part 3's revenue is higher than part 2's but lower than part 1's. I suppose that the ST is no different. So I think that Episode 9 will do better than TLJ but not as good as TFA. I guess that too many people want to know how it ends, there might be even some who will watch it because it is "Star Wars" nonetheless just for the hype of it. Some could even regard it as the equivalent of a car crash: You really don't want to see it but the horror doesn't give you any choice.;)

I'll bite...

why do all these people (us, considering i'm one) have no interest? It's not rocket science.

  • (this one doesn't apply to me, but) 7 was basically a rehash of 8. You gotta start somewhere and I was fine with tit personally, but many dislike it on that basis
  • TLJ...oooph...the short version. The stomped on the OT just to do it. This isn't for you or anyone to agree with, it is the feeling of those who have no desire for 9.
  • TLJ leaves NOTHING open for expectation for 9. The flip side of that is they can do anything, however, that's NOT the position you're supposed to be in for a trilogy finale. To peak people's interest for a finale there needs to be things to do. There isn't. If there was never another SW movie, there would be no 'but what about....' plot lines left in the air.
  • They've billed it as the end of the skywalker saga....pfft...the ONLY way that happens is if Kylo dies and i can't imagine anyone will be disappointed when he dies.
  • Everything about 8 and how RJ and LFL handled it put off a lot of people.

Again, others may have additional reasons, but i think that's the gist of it. And this is an answer to a quesiton, It's not something to be refuted line by line, etc.

My personal short answer is this: I'm fine with Rey and Finn, on the fence with Poe, do not like Hux at all and do not like Kylo at all. They stomped on Luke 'just cause' and totally undid his character. Then couple that with no open story line and you get very little interest.

It's not to say it couldn't be good, but nothing i've heard yet fills me with hope.

I'm sure you have your own definition of a "true" fan, but it's in no way universal. "Love" is a pretty strong term, I love Star Wars the same way I "love" chocolate cake, conditionally. If you frost a chocolate cake with grease paint I'm not going to love it. At some point you might have kids, that's when you find out what unconditional love is for. Not some entertainment franchise, no matter how much fun you find it to be. Lighted up a bit bro.

I have no doubt it will make money. All the films have. They just won't be getting mine. They didn't for Solo either. I have no obligation to fund their work if I don't like it, especially if they insist on blaming fans when they call them out on their bs. It's taken me years to realize that I only care about the originals and some of the ancillary material and I have no reason to apologize for my opinions.

I've stated my reasons for not liking the new material in post after post over the years so I don't feel the need to justify it any further at this time. Either you read my arguments and accepted my stance, regardless of whether you were in agreement or not, or you willfully ignored everything I had to say about it. That's on you. The fact that I'm involved in discussions like these is proof enough that I'm a fan.

I find it condescending that my fandom has repeatedly been questioned along with others who may take my stance. Who are you to decide who is a true fan and who isn't? It's a nerd form of elitism. There is no other way to take that other than as an insult. These are movies for God's sake. It's not a religion. People act as though it's some sort of heresy if there is a dissenting opinion.

And for the record I've never disparaged someone personally for liking something I don't. I may have questioned their opinion or way in which they spoke to others but I never questioned whether they are a fan. In fact I've defended and befriended people who disagree with me partly because we are both fans.

When are people going to grow up and just learn to agree to disagree like adults?
