Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

I really don't care, the only thing that would excite me would be a remastered 4K release of the Original Unaltered Trilogy

J

Now that Disney is going to own it, I'm sure that's top of their list. It would be printing money.

I do not know if it is possible anymore to get the original edition converted to 4K.
One of the motivations which resulted in the Special Editions was that the original film stock was deteriorating badly and needed to be restored. The restoration project spun into a CGI development project with a reedit of the film. That was years ago, there is a good chance there are no surviving quality prints around of the original version to use anymore.
I hope there is, Don't have a 4K system but I would love to get a great copy of the first release

I've been dreaming if that for years now but I fear it will never happen if George has anything to say about it.

If they have all the cut scenes from the OT that have been released on the blurays they certainly have or could re edit a cut of the original films. Lucasfilm saved everything. Just because George didn't want to release the original cuts doesn't mean they don't exist in some form.

Just cuz I like to bring "balance" I'll state for the thread that I STILL dig what they did with Luke - not the thrown lightsaber, not the milk drinking... but every other character trait.

COME AT ME!

Man if he was "Luke-dalf the White" it would've been SO BORING.

I dunno... Maybe I'm just a dude that suddenly had everything crash around him and can see how quickly you can go from Mr. Good Times to "EVERYONE CAN JUST P!$$ OFF!"

I straight up love Luke in TLJ... so I guess that whole bit was directed at guys like me. Heck I wanted to see Luke full dark side...

The milk drinking is the only thing I LIKE about the last Jedi lol

On a serious note, I’m with ya bro. I liked like saying f the world (galaxy) I’m out, giving up and living in solitude.

I was just hoping he’d have a change of heart to start to train Rey.. really hoped to see the knights raid the island and start killing the little bird nuns, and burning huts until luke comes out of the shadow to kick @$$

Kinda like Mr. Miyagi’s entrance in karate kid 2. When they are beating up Daniel son, and destroying Miyagi’s garden...

Heh...

It is not so much if they exist but what condition might they be in?

IIRC a lot of those deleted scenes added to the BluRay were in pretty rough shape

I have been there since 1977. Been a fan ever since, all the ups and downs. But I firmly believe that the OT was a product of its time in the world, and that's hard to replicate. The "feel" of the OT is what I think most us want; the idea that we just saw a solid, good, entertaining film that caught us off guard and made us think. SW did this. TESB did this, with one heck of a sucker punch at the end. ROTJ did NOT do this, it was more of a rehash with a tidy bow on top. IF SW and TESB were a great steak dinner, then ROTJ was a cheeseburger. Filling, but not the same quality.

Lucas got exactly what he wanted for the PT. What we saw on screen was his directorial vision, AND his editing vision (right down to splicing to different takes from two different actors into one scene). There was good content there, but buried in the muck of his vision. But it was HIS vision.

Under Lucasfilm (really, I should say KK), the tides have changed. Outside of merchandising, I never felt that any of the 6 SW films Lucas did were exclusively for box office receipts. And even with the PT, social media was NOT the Wampa that it is today. Now, every spoiler/rumor/telephoto picture/key grip anonymous comment is immediately posted and then reposted as gospel.

Lucasfilm/KK want to make a "good" film, sure. But it's all about the Benjamins. Opening weekend draw, overseas numbers, DVD/Blu-ray and digital sales. Bad initial returns make board members and executive VPs-of-xyz department very nervous. Stock prices flutter, and people loose their jobs in the ensuing panic. KK answers to a Board of Directors, not the fans. So we live in a world of accelerated hype before a film, put butts in seats, then quickly get to digital distribution and DVD/Bluray before the embers have completely died out.

I really hope that JJ Abrams retcons the snot out of TLJ, but who knows? Seems to me there are some easy plot points that would satisfy old fans (like me) and new SW filmgoers, and still eave room for a unique story. Granted, this is all moot now that principal filming has ended:
1) Give Rey a background.
2) Have Kylo interact with Vader or Anakin, in some way
3) Bring back Luke, the "real" Luke character (we know Hamill is in the film, but is it a 30 second cameo a la TFA?)
4) ASK HAMILL HOW HE FEELS LUKE SHOULD BE USED AT THIS POINT (see above)
5) Give Leia a self sacrificing, meaningful death
6) Either redeem Kylo, or have him die fighting full of dark side rage. No Phasma or Fett outros here.
7) Close out the 9 film saga with our 2 droids

Under JJ, my biggest concern is NOT that Episode 9 will be a bad film, but more of a "sterile" one, a filling but ultimately lukewarm cheeseburger.

There is no doubt I'll go see Ep IX.

I'm a movie fan . I loved watching films since I was a kid,and I like the stories that they might tell me about the world , fact or fiction, and I get a real thrill from scifi/fantasy films particularly because they take me into the realms I've never dreamt of.
So I will go and see it .

But, I have very little hope it will fix the disappointment I feel after TLJ

I've been to see any number of films that have often failed to live up to my expectations. There are a surprisingly good number that have passed (to judge by my DVD collection), and there are a certain special few left me with that rare elated feeling that I had just watched something utterly fantastic and special on screen for a brief couple of hours.

The OT Star Wars still does that.

But TLJ did too much damage for me to care very much about the next one.

It did not grow characters stories, it reduced them by making terrible decisions with the plot that only the very uncritical would accept. It really added nothing but simply recycled huge chunks of the OT .It didn't operate like the universe I once respected or recognised and it made inexplicably bizarre and stupid choices throughout its telling.

And thats where Marvel with the MCU has ultimately and effortlessly won me over. It gives what were once quite simple "comic book" characters and storylines consequence ,interest and real depth. I really care about the outcome. I've rewatched all of them leading up to "Endgame" and enjoyed every single one (and that's twenty odd films!!!) .

Thats not true for Star Wars any more.

Given that SW Celebration is likely to drop some footage, be it a behind the scenes reel, possibly even a teaser trailer and some cast interviews dropping hints about IX I just don't feel or sense any strong interest in it any more for myself or here.

My only hope is that it ends the Skywalker story in such a way that it allows the SW universe to reset itself and they are then in a position to move it forward. There was so much potential in it and the stories it could tell and I am still left feeling hugely disappointed that that has been largely wasted.

Sometimes i think it's more the way those opinions are stated--on BOTH sides--that keeps the divide alive. Like, if I like something, and someone continually says what i like takes a dump on something they like, how can that EVER foster a feeling of 'agree to disagree"? It's inflammatory language... it's stating one;'s stance TOO strongly... using words which are designed to be micro aggressions toward those who hold the opposite opinion.

And I'm not pointing fingers or laying blame with this. we have ALL done it. I'm simply saying that i feel very often what prompts many to continue the argument is an emotional reaction to how something is said to them. "Your movie takes a steaming dump on my beloved franchise", "I love this movie so much, and anyone who doesn't is a complete dimwit who must be either mentally ill or not a true fan", etc. extreme statements... completely unnecessary, and almost assured to continue to divide people.

I have defended my love for the ST often, and Psab for example has continued to disagree with me. But They do it in a civil manner, and almost never use inflammatory language when disagreeing with me. I have almost never used it in return. (nobody is 100% perfect) so it *CAN* work... as long as neither one is either spoiling for a fight, or intent on asserting their opinion above the other.

kristen jones and this is why I enjoy the dicussion with you because you always remain civil and are all about the unity of the fandom above your own ego! Despite my opinion being opposed to yours I try my best to not only remain civil but to remember that at the end of the day we are all fans and more importantly we are all people. Joek3rr drives me crazy sometimes with his approach, but I too consider him a friend and fellow fan.

I know we will never agree on this topic and if what I said was taken as a sleight, and this goes for anyone who loves the new films as long as they haven't resorted to name calling, then I sincerely apologize.

We all have strong opinions here. I know I can get pretty heated but it's never my intention to belittle someone. I try to choose my words very carefully so that they focus on the ideas presented and not the person behind them.

I don't care what George wants. He doesn't have the rights to it anymore, Disney does. Disney doesn't have to consult George and I think it's about time to stop giving a damn what George wants.

I'm of the opinion that Star Wars works best as one trilogy and not as a franchise or series. In that regard all I've wanted for over ten years now was the original theatrical cuts in a properly restored hi definition format.

I'm happy that I have my laser disc tranfers, but it would be nice to have hi def versions. I think it would be a smart marketing move for Disney too. There are director cuts and theatrical cuts that get released all the time. Look at Blade Runner. Why can't they do that for Star Wars? It would make money. Tons of it.

The other films have great moments but the original Star Wars is still my all time favorite. It has everything hitting perfectly and takes you on a journey- you really feel like a innocent farm boy who gets pulled out of his nice predictable world and into a vast universe.

There are elements of every installment that I enjoy but there are only three that have worked for me as complete stories.

On a day that has actually provided the world with a picture of a Black hole, here's another mystery. How JJ is going to save SW:

I think this highlights one of the major reasons the new trilogy has problems. If they had at least a rough outline on where things should go and end with the trilogy, then we wouldn't have the mess we are stuck with. They could have just made standalone movies instead of trying to fix everything with the last movie

"With two years to make the movie for a pre-ordained release date, and no script in hand, Abrams asked Argo's Chris Terrio to co-write the script with him. And even then, there were challenges... "It was a completely unknown scenario," he explains. "I had some gut instincts about where the story would have gone. But without getting in the weeds on Episode VIII, that was a story that Rian wrote and was telling based on VII before we met. So he was taking the thing in another direction. So we also had to respond to Last Jedi. So our movie was not just following what we had started, it was following what we had started and then had been advanced by someone else. So there was that, and, finally, it was resolving nine movies. While there are some threads of larger ideas and some big picture things that had been conceived decades ago and a lot of ideas that Lawrence Kasdan and I had when we were doing The Force Awakens, the lack of absolute inevitability, the lack of a complete structure for this thing, given the way it was being run was an enormous challenge."
