"The smaller and more interconnected we make these stories, the less credible the stories become." Not only that, but I find it makes the story less INTERESTING, too. We've seen all this before. Now you're just recycling it for the " 'memba this?!" factor. It's a callback for the sake of a callback and it usually signals an otherwise crappy story. Although I suppose we could play chicken vs. egg over whether the callbacks-for-callbacks cause the bad story, or are brought in to shore up an already bad one...
