Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Exactly. And while that may all be more extreme than Disney suits are willing to do, it's that principle that should be kept in mind. "The smaller and more interconnected we make these stories, the less credible the stories become." Not only that, but I find it makes the story less INTERESTING, too. We've seen all this before. Now you're just recycling it for the " 'memba this?!" factor. It's a callback for the sake of a callback and it usually signals an otherwise crappy story. Although I suppose we could play chicken vs. egg over whether the callbacks-for-callbacks cause the bad story, or are brought in to shore up an already bad one...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah they should not go to any planets we've already seen, except Coruscant. I think if you really have to the only person you need to see is Luke. He could just be there to hand out the mission to the new kids and show the audience that he rebuilt the Order. Maybe he would have to show up to help deal with whatever end battle that would happen.

One thing that bothered me about the prequels was the Jedi headquarters being on Coruscant. The Jedi order should have been separate from the seat of power and watched from a distance while keeping their objective...and no I don't think Lucas intended that as a plot point(maybe he mentioned something about it in an interview or wrote it on a bubble gum wrapper). There was no logic behind how the Jedi were portrayed in the prequels, they were just scatterbrained and undefined. I would love to see more of the spiritual nature that we saw in TESB.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Tatooine is the home planet of both main characters in both trilogies, it makes sense that they would go back at least once. That said, I don't think we will see Tatooine. Unless, of course, Luke's child is born on Tatooine...but since I doubt Luke would ever go back there, that would be stupid, so i hope not.

I said the same basic thing a few pages back. That's how i see obi-wan and palpatine being in it.

Somewhere in one of the prequel movies Lucas casually explained that (well, sort of explained it) through some of Yoda's dialogue; the Jedi's ability to use The Force was diminished and, though they didn't really know the exact cause, they believed it was caused by the presence of the Sith.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If someone played a prominent role in overthrowing an empire, I think they would have significant places in society afterward. Do you NEED Han, Leia, or Lando? No, but encountering them wouldnt be awkward. I guess you could say you don't even NEED Luke, but might as well say you don't even NEED Episode VII.

I NEED Episode VII.

So the Jedi are so ineffectual they can be weakened just by the presence of two...count em two Sith? This means their powers of observation are lessened to the point that no one can see the obvious fact that Anakin is a few cans short of a six pack? The Jedi suck...give me the dark side any day, although they don't seem to be much better. Maybe the force is overrated.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I took it to mean it wasn't the mere presence of two Sith but rather the rising influence if the Dark Side which allowed for the return if The Sith.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It's really just a poorly written aspect of a poorly written trilogy. We can try to make it make sense all we like, but in the end, we're the ones having to fill in the blanks because it's just not that well written.

"Well, they became weakened because, you know...the Dark Side."

"Wait, so TWO Sith guys show up and it screws up the Jedi's ability to spot a bitter loony? Seriously?"

"Well, no, not exactly. More like the Dark Side is influencing more stuff throughout the galaxy."

"How do you figure? I mean, we never see that, really."

"Well, it's implied, isn't it? I mean, Dooku is working with Sidious originally, and each of them is basically leading a war with opposing halves of the galaxy, so, there. Dark side everywhere."

"Yeah, but it's not like they are shown ACTUALLY manipulating anyone USING the Dark Side. It's all just implied and suggested and hinted at in very, very oblique ways."

Yeah, it's really just not that well written.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

When you think of it, all of Star Wars is full of hype and things being blown out of proportion. The biggest are probably Stormtroopers, they're implied as being elite forces, the Emperor's feared shock troops, even Obi-Wan suggests that they are expert marksmen yet the only thing they seem to be able to hit is the broad side of a barn or more specifically, the broad side of a Jawa sandcrawler. When it comes to shooting at people though, they're some of the worst shots ever and their armor is so ineffective it doesn't even protect them from primitive stone age weaponry. With troops like that it's a wonder how the Empire actually managed to capture Leia's ship at the beginning of Ep. IV much less not managed to completely lose to the Rebellion much earlier on.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Personally I just don't harbor a lot of animosity towards the prequels. Certainly they are not perfect and lack the sheer joy if the OT, but I enjoy them and always have.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

At this point, I don't have animosity towards them, per se. I just don't think they're good or effective stories. They're light shows -- and cool ones at that, in many cases -- but little more.

But even by that standard, they're not as effective as the OT, and, I think, require a good bit more "post-hoc" explanations to fill in plot holes or explain away inconsistencies, and eventually I just can't help but roll my eyes and say "Oh, screw it. They just aren't very good films. Let's move on."

I thought it odd that Mace Windu would say something like "The Dark Side of the Force surrounds the Chancellor." but later when Anakin tells him of his discovery Mace is surprised and even doubtful; " A Sith Lord?
Anakin Skywalker: Yes, the one we've been looking for.
Mace Windu: How do you know this?
Anakin Skywalker: He knows the ways of the Force. He's been trained to use the Dark Side.
Mace Windu: Are you sure?

no Mace.. all the clues and the fact that I would come to you and tattle on someone I am close to (but you wanted me to spy on) shouldn't be taken seriously! :lol
I mean come on... Palpatine should have been suspected much earlier.

Obi Wan: " The Council doesn't like it when he interferes in Jedi affairs." .. "Our allegiance is to the Senate, not to its leader who has managed to stay in office long after his term has expired."
ANAKIN: Master, the Senate demanded that he stay longer.
OBI-WAN: Yes, but use your feelings, Anakin. Something is out of place."

something is out of place? hmmmm, and you are looking for a Sith... someone who is manipulating things from the inside.. hmmmm, Palpatine likes power, managed to stay in power, has Anakin's right ear... seems to get the entire Senate on his side no matter the decision... hmmmm nah, couldn't be him... he's just an old man. :unsure

Those Jedi are smart ones aren't they? Palpatine must have been using the Force IQ Destroyer power on them.:lol

Considering it's the end of August, 2013, I am going to be the first to say this will be the longest thread in RPF history. Even more then the hot convention girl thread in the OT forum. :)

Just imagine the posts when a screenshot hits, then a trailer, and then the debate after release.

It's certainly the longest thread with the least amount of official information.
