Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release) (Spoilers)

He could have gotten 100% correct if he'd had more patience with his material.

You don't remember him insisting that Luke was the villain of the story? He went to great lengths to cram what was known of Hammill/Luke into what was known from production art and story leaks, and indicated that the images of Ren (whose name was not known at the time) represented Hammill. With each post and tweet and message board conversation, he became more insistent that this was the direction of the story. It was all based on his own speculation (as usual) informed by drawings and bits of information, but when people took Occam's razor to his theory he dug in his heels. He said Hammill's beard was contractually-obligated (borrowing from Hammill's interview joke) was a ruse; that he was following the production to Ireland, to England, to California, all in the fake off-hours beard, to throw off fans - all in bizarre support of his own guess at what all those pieces might be pointing to.

This was the beginning of it: http://makingstarwars.net/2014/10/huge-rumor-star-wars-episode-viis-father-sized-moment/

It's par for the course - you're rolling the dice reading their news, and Jason's attempts to mislead his competition (and their readers) are contrary to the spirit of the fan community that I would encourage. MSW won't get my clicks or support.

Ok yes, he led with a rumor of Mark being the villain. But he never said Mark was the Kylo character. That's always been Adam Driver. He did at one point speculate if Luke was portrayed as a half cyborg in some of the concept art. And yes that was incorrect. I am agnostic towards all of this. I don't care if Jason is a class one tool, I'm just curious in collating rumors and seeing which pan out. And a sober, unbiased anaylsis of what we have heard so far still but the ball in his court regarding veracity.

We just didn't know yet what Kylo's name was, but he said from the start that the Kylo art was Hamill's character. That's why he had to insist that the beard he'd been seen with in public was fake - it just didn't reconcile with the Kylo art. He wondered publicly if they were changing the beard out over time because it was getting longer. You know, like beards do as they grow.

That, and spreading disinformation to other news sites just rubs me the wrong way.

Something that's not sitting right with me about what we've learned so far - and apologies if this has been addressed in the other thread or on MSW, which I read from time to time but is a little too densely packed for me sometimes:

If Rey is Leia and Han's daughter, why is she a junk collector on Jakku and not a member of the royal family? The whole "separating the children for safety" thing doesn't make sense this time around (and I hope and pray they have more creativity than to pull that again), but the only main character that appears to know Han and Leia is Poe, who is a little old to be their son and has a different last name anyway.

It does seem likely that Rey is the daughter of Han and Leia, but how did she get to Jakku and why is she out of touch with her parents?

although it is still not clear, a lot of evidence is pointing in the direction of Rey NOT being their daughter. There is also some indication Kylo might be there son.

Interesting. So then is the VO in the teaser a red herring? Or is Luke speaking to Kylo Ren?

That would invalidate the "my family" portion of the VO then, I assume.

Although the idea that that monologue refers to Fin is pretty funny:

LUKE: "... you have that power, too."

FIN: "okay cool. Wait, so what does that have to do with your family?"

LUKE: "oh, nothing, I was just saying."

Right now the big money is Fin, he is the force sensitive person who may become a reluctant Jedi.

By the way, I'm aware that the teaser VO is re-used from ROTJ. Maybe I'm reading too much into its relevance to the plot of TFA. But how can I resist?

Or like Spaceballs. "What does that make us?"
"Abolutely nothing!"

I really don't want to stir up controversy... but does anyone feel like this Jedi situation is a lot like the USA presidential elections?

Will we get a black male? Or female Jedi first?

I can't help but feel a LITTLE like I do about the new ghostbusters... I understand peoples wanting more diversity in things... but this is still the story about the skywalkers etc.

I can't help but feel that Finns character was kind of shoehorned into this thing because of all the PC nonsense...

I hope I'm proven wrong and it all flows naturally. But it feels kind of forced from what I've seen. (haha "forced")

I also hope that Rey is actually Kira Solo...

I am constantly irritated by PC casting, but I don't see this being the case at all assuming Boyega is the new Jedi of the Sequel trilogy anymore then I felt Sam Jackson was stunt PT casting in the PT. They both feel seem less and color blind. I just don't think she is a Solo.

I would be very surprised if by episode IX this is still the Skywalkers' story. Casting doesn't bother me.

I find this line of thinking really frustrating.

Rest assured the Skywalkers will be getting plenty of screen time in the new trilogy. What on earth (or Jakku) is even the least bit "PC nonsense" about casting John Boyega, an incredible actor with up-and-coming action film cred, in a leading role? Or giving a female character a role as a Jedi? It does nothing but remind us that the SW universe is about more people than Luke, Han and Leia.

I love the SW fan base but the amount of backlash (even the softer, "maybe it will work" type) is utterly baffling to me, and I've been seeing it everywhere since day one.

Would anyone have a problem with a Sullustan or Twi'lek lead character? No, because that would be a ridiculous thing to get upset about. There are billions of characters in this universe, and not all of them are white. How is that pandering or political in any way?

Not to pile on, OldKen. It's nothing personal at all. I'm just mystified that it's even something ANYONE is talking about, let alone SW fans.

IF the rumor that Luke doesn't fearure a lot in this film it might indicate he has a larger role in Ep. 8, but in a general sense I think you are right and I coukd see Ep. 10-12 being all about the new generation. Especially if they do kill Han in this movie, which I think is VERY likely.

I'm half native American. My best friend to this day and since age 3 is black. (he also agrees that it seems like they put in the black guy hero because Lando was kind of a shady guy and the only other actual black character which IS kind of sad!)

I really like John Boyega. I own Attack the Block... I SAID THAT I HOPE I'M WRONG AND IT ALL FLOWS NATURALLY.

It still seems like they are going the PC route.

The Empire NEVER had aliens or women in the movies.

That used to be OK to write that the badguys don't approve of aliens etc. But now they probably have to.

I bet the Anchorhead cantina even serves droids now...

Come to think of it... maybe that's why the new desert planet isn't tatooine... so they don't have to discriminate robots... LOL.

I think some of it is the WAY in which it is being handled.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed by the way Daisy Ridley was presented at the opening ceremony for Celebration. It was little more than dismissive of the way women were handled in the OT and even seemed to throw disdain on Princess Leia, while constantly pounding the idea of a "strong woman" into the ground... something I absolutely hate because while people seem to think that is a good thing, it isn't at all. Talking about "strong women" only serves to reinforce a belief that women aren't and only helps continue to create a rift and promote disparity between the sexes. If you care about a character being a "strong woman" then you are already leaning towards a sexist bent. Instead of focusing on that, what should be the concern is whether she is a strong/capable character/person. By focusing on sex and race it seems that we are being preached to and no one wants that.
