As for Luke, I don't think that scene with Vader meant that Luke forgave Vader at all. I think what people miss is that Obi Wan, Yoda, and probably Luke clearly distinguish between Anakin Skywalker and Vader as two different people. So Luke was glad that Anakin was back, not that he was forgiving Vader. I'm sure if he had lived Vader would definitely have been tried for his crimes and Anakin would have to take the punishment.
Obi-Wan says in ROTS, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes," but the difference between light and dark in the PT seems absolute, polarized and obvious. I love that Luke's and Vader's struggles with the other side, especially with regard to each other, seems palpable, tempting and real, even though we as the audience know what is wrong and right. I'm really hoping for that kind of ambivalence in this new trilogy.
The point about Vader forcing Leia to watch the destruction of her home world doesn't hold up, it was Tarkin's idea and it was he who gave the order to destroy Alderaan. Vader used the mind probe on her, that's about it.
When it comes to Alderaan's destruction, Darth Vader is definitely an accessory to it. He may not have given the order but he sure as fudge was 100% for it. The dude grabbed Leia and held her in place while it all happened! I doubt he was giving her a reassuring rub on the shoulder.

Is that charred detail reflecting something that happens to it or has the top portion always looked like that?
*Psycho music plays*You'know I just had a crazy thought....what if the whole point of the film is they're trying to clone....Vader? what if that's Ren's whole thing is trying to get enough DNA to make a NEW Vader?
