The moment you decide to commit an act of violence it has very real consequences. And its a terribly difficult moral barrier to break for most , particularly against a member of your own family. My take on it was similar to Arts and gizmo. I felt that that he was being terribly conflicted, particularly by guilt, and struggling with it. I thought for a moment he was asking Han to help him kill himself. After all we really DON'T know what atrocities he has committed against the Jedi or his immediate family, its not said in the film and we barely glimpse anything at all in that vision. If he has killed Lukes wife on top of everything else, how can he truly comeback to his family? We already know that Anakin did exactly the same thing and became Vader.
I wonder if Kylo lacked specific Jedi skills as Ben that made him weaker than the other students and with all the expectations of his ancestry that was too much to bear, so he could only gain greater powers once he turned to the dark side under Snokes guidance. I still find it strange that NONE of the other Knights of Ren had lightsabres and if there were Jedi there how could they be so easily beaten? Something very odd had to have happened at this point to tip the balance of power towards Ren and co.
Snokes influence is part of that, and perhaps the brain washing that is part of the First Orders Stormtroopers indoctrination wasn't also responsible for Bens conversion to Kylo. The First Order does seem to have sprung up totally around Snokes malevolent influence, and look at how much direct control he had over both Kylo and Hux.
I felt the one thing Kylo was trying to do was fight against the dilemma of his actions had brought to him and that it could have gone either way. Thats why I felt Adam Driver brought so much more to his character than say a certain actor did his, in that you could really see the conflict with in him this time,
If he is a darkside psychopath , then, rather than living with the guilt as Ben, killing Han seems to enable him to remove all that agony of self doubt, at least for that moment and he isolates himself from all the harm he has done to those he once called family, and allies himself totally with Snoke and becomes another person Kylo Ren. Once he has taken that dreadful step into the moral abyss by killing his father then he has truly damaged so much of what was once Ben, surrendering to the path of the darkside and stepping away from the light ,which ,given that he appears to blame it for Vaders eventual downfall and weakness he appears to be strangely frightened of.
PS I need to see this again once everyone has gone back to school. I don't operate well in very crowded and noisy conditions.
PPS In the opening crawl the First Order only arises AFTER Luke has gone , which suggests even more strongly to me that Snoke specifically was in hiding and had to use Ben to remove Luke. Given Kylos fear of the lightside the mind control powers that Kylo has are probably very limited by the lightside, which is why Luke HAD to be gone before Snoke could build his new Empire built primarily on mind control and conditioning. Certainly Poe suffered but Rey threw off and resisted its effects quickly. But I am just guessing.
