STAR WARS - The Acolyte lightsabers

I think this is the saber that Lesley had talked about. She requested some special lightsaber to the prop guys and they said it was not possible, so they somehow made it work with some trickery (cheat as you said).
I was hoping there would be another more interesting lightsaber design revealed (hopefully it will belong to the Sith Master).

Whilst it is a cool idea (and sneaky, in line with the Stranger’s character) but as a design it doesn’t seem to be so impractical as Leslye suggests the kick back she received from the prop dept. Hopefully there is another cool lightsaber reveal in the pipeline. I think the design is sick, but I’m hoping this isn’t “it”.

I hope we see not just the Sith Master but also his lightsaber as I have fears about whether we will get a second season of this. The way it’s going, this might be our only chance.

agreed i hope you are correct.

The difficult-to-implement designs Headland referred to was just making LED sabers that could stand up to prequel-style duelling. She was pretty explicit about that.

Seeing the full hilt more in tonight’s episode, the separation is kind of a cheat I think. I mean, I’m not an internals junkie, it’s all space fantasy tech magic so it’s fine, but I don’t think there’s room for two complete real-life internals.
I think it can be done know seeing how the inquisitors sabers work

Looks like the Jedi would have stock lightsabers with some customisation for Padawan, Knight and Master levels.

The Sith ones are interesting- thinking we might get a blade length adjustment as one design features this and it is from Legends. Cortosis debuted in I, Jedi - and I think Corran Horn designed a saber where the blade could adjust the length. This is of course not new as Vader’s lightsaber could do this in Legends but in Cannon, this would be the first live action depiction.

A bit of trivia for ya ..

It's not canon, but the first ever blade length adjustment happened in "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" from 1978. I believe that novel was based on an early "Star Wars 2" idea from George Lucas.

It's also the first mention of the planet Mimban. :)

Kanan's hilt had blade length adjust when Ezra was training on top of the Ghost.

Some really good designs for the Jedi master lightsabers. Pity none of them were used.

What? Fans have been doing that forever.

“I want to use the type of lightsabers that you can actually duel with as opposed to utilizing sticks that you then CGI in later.”
Headland even learnt lessons from the sequel trilogy of Star Wars films, which featured heavier, bulkier lightsabers for its actors to throw down with. “That affected the way Daisy [Ridley] and Adam [Driver] fought because they wanted to have that practical lighting,” Headland explained.
Instead, the showrunner asked the props team “to create lightsabers that could be utilized the way Darth Maul or Qui-Gon Jinn use them, but they also had to light up for the practical light effects”.
Headland added: “I do have to thank the props department for making that happen – it did start with them saying we can’t do that!”

Vader's Vault whole schtick is making slim dueling sabers. Some of their combat class sabers can almost fit inside of other sabers on the market. (I have the REV-N. It's a perfect slim Prequel-esqe.) lightsaber Sure you can't use LED string for heavy dueling. But it's absolutely silly that this is their excuse.

I'm not claiming they're hard to do, I'm just pointing out that Headland claimed they were, and that only to clear up what "difficult" design she may have been talking about.

VV have been less inclined to guarantee the duelling capabilities of their products in recent times.

Nobody uses LED string blades anymore. Pixel strips aren’t string blades (strings are a very specific type) and can be used for heavy duelling. Yes they are more expensive to fix/replace, but a properly built one can withstand plenty of abuse.

Even outside of Vader's Vault. You can make a pretty substantial lightsaber from The Custom Saber Shop. And they are slimmer than what the prop department is making for this show. I mean just look at the lightsabers used in the full contact dueling sport. They aren't big and chunky. (They're long to give proper longsword or katana grips.)

Custom sabers don’t always use the equipment production ones use.

Up to each person whether they want to take this info as genuine;

Makes sense to me that the needs of a professional video production crew will be different than those of fans who want to play around with their light-up toys. I may not be in love the new hilt designs, but I get why they did what they did.

I stumbled on this realization when I was trying to get Stranger Things flashlights - for off-the-shelf items some of the prop houses have pre-designed DMX rigs they can rent out to productions - but if you ever wondered why the kids always have pretty hefty flashlights? Yup. As soon as I saw that revelation it made perfect sense why lightsabers (and anything emitting appreciable light) would need to be hefty.

We just upgraded half our stage's lighting to D-Fi DMX LED units at work. My wall-mounted broadcasting packs are about 6" x 8" and run off a 12v DC wall-wart. But the lighting units are all running off 110 with the wireless integrated into the main board - and even there the tech is somewhat iffy at times. With something that has to be reliable because lost minutes mean thousands in losses? I'd up the saber size too. ;-)
