STAR WARS - The Acolyte lightsabers

I know this isn't the real reason for the thickness of the sabers, but in the real world sometimes trends and preferences change over time just for aesthetics. For example length of skirts, how baggy or tight pants are, etc. It could be at the time of the Acolyte they prefer a simpler design that is thicker. Things should look somewhat different than the eras we have previously seen.

Are these brass cases ammunition cases?

I stumbled on this realization when I was trying to get Stranger Things flashlights - for off-the-shelf items some of the prop houses have pre-designed DMX rigs they can rent out to productions - but if you ever wondered why the kids always have pretty hefty flashlights? Yup. As soon as I saw that revelation it made perfect sense why lightsabers (and anything emitting appreciable light) would need to be hefty.

We just upgraded half our stage's lighting to D-Fi DMX LED units at work. My wall-mounted broadcasting packs are about 6" x 8" and run off a 12v DC wall-wart. But the lighting units are all running off 110 with the wireless integrated into the main board - and even there the tech is somewhat iffy at times. With something that has to be reliable because lost minutes mean thousands in losses? I'd up the saber size too. ;-)
I could be wrong as I haven't seen it mentioned, but I'm pretty sure in the ST they also had the dueling props ending out XML data that made tracking the blades easier for rotoscoping. There's multiple times you can see the antenna on the bottom of the Graflex stunts. This may be another component.

But yeah-- production needs more than "light up and take impact." They need exacting control over color/temperatures as they would vary scene to scene depending on the lighting set up.
