Star Wars: questions you've always wanted answers for

I always thought the circular blockade of a sphere was stupid, but maybe they aligned the circle with the plane of the galaxy. Any useful hyperspace routes all fall within that simple disc (barring the thickness of the planet from a polar orbit)

too be honest, I never cared for the all black. I think it made him look way too much like vader. although that might have been intentional.
who knows with lucas and his ever changing OCD line of thought..

It WAS deliberate. During costume fitting, Mark said to George something like, "What's with the black costume? It's very Vadery.." George replied, "....it's supposed to be...."

I had always thought it was indicative of his possible fall the dark side if he didn't watch himself. He gets close using rage, more or less, to defeat vader in the end, but before succumbing he realizes what's going on and stops.

Wouldn't it have been neat if Vader's black attire turned out to be just a more "mechanical" version of traditional Jedi garb? I think so anyways...

I think the cartoons had the right idea in showing Anakin starting to wear some of the Vader clothing while he was still a "good" Jedi. The shoulder armor, the leg armor. Why George didn't do that in the films themselves....

I agree. I didn't like how the "post-immolation" attire came out of nowhere and it would've been neat to at least see how the design was influenced.

It would've be quite a surprise to me if the prequels had depicted the Jedi sporting black garments with armor we had formerly attributed to Vader only. Would've turned the "bad guys wear black" motif on its head and been in keeping with with George's original statements regarding Jedi attire.

Oh yeah, and Obi-Wan wore a white version of the chest armor in the cartoon. Same deal.

No one seems to remember but, in 1979, marvel did an issue showing a younger Jedi Ben Kenobi. While I am fully cognizant that George Lucas did not delve into every detail of the comics, given the various guidelines and the upcoming sequel, I have to believe they at least asked him what a Jedi would look like as they had never been shown on screen before. The outfit shown in that issue is black and not unlike the one Luke eventually wore. So, yeah, I do believe the outfit Lukewore in ROTJ was, at least at the time, meant to be more like a traditional Jedi outfit

that is awesome! i never knew about this!!

The old EU explanation was that there are only so many safe Hyperspace routes in between locations, so they were probably just blocking the likely route ships would come into and try to leave the planet. That's why Padme's ship had to go straight through the Trade Federation ships to get away.

I don't know if I'd take Marvel as proof. They also put a giant green rabbit in there as a character.

Well, two things on that . . .

1. You have a point - but, at the same time, given the fairy-tale aspect of SW and the association of “black” with (and only with) the main villains in the first film (Vader, TIE pilots, etc.), I have to believe Marvel wouldn’t just arbitrarily cloak the heroic “knights” in black without at least running it by Lucasfilm.

(At the same time, Luke wears a black shirt at the end of SW, doesn’t he? So who knows? I’ll give us each half a point in this match;). )

2. Re: Jaxxon: I’m pretty sure GL endorsed the idea of a similar long-legged, floppy-eared funny talking side-kick a bit later on, say around 1999 or so . . . :cool

If you disregard the X wing flight suits, then Luke wears mostly white in ANH, mostly grey in ESB, and mostly black in ROTJ, its a clear progression.

1 Why don't the rebels drop some more fighters behind Vader and the Ties in the trench and take them out or just fly in Falcon style and pick them off?
2 Empire with repulsor lift vehicles and speeders yet the Sandtroopers adopt Dewbacks while dispatched to Tatooine. Why? And nobody say it's like the Alliance "having trouble adapting the speeders to the cold."
3 Porkin's is asked to eject. So he would swap a fiery death to freeze in space or does an orange coverall and motorcycle gloves protect pilots from no atmosphere and sub-zero temperatures.
4 Jawas. Great business model trundling round the desert hoping to chance upon droids.
5 Grappling hook. Amongst millions of imperial troops Luke happens to chance on the only Stormtrooper with a grappling hook. Good job TK4356 or "Mr Tractor Beam Deactivator key guy" as he was known to his colleagues had the day off.
6 Snowspeeder tow cables. Why? Do the Rebels have target blimps or an ace waterski team that would need tow cables? Are there some kind of snow-whales on Hoth that need harpooning?

Not to mention that Porkins would only get about 20mins of extra life unless they had a shuttle that could rescue him. Otherwise he will just have a good view for the explosion.

1. Aren't the remaining X-wings preoccupied with the other TIE fighters?

2. I figure Tatooine is backwater enough that the Empire figures it isn't worth devoting too much equipment or just found it easier to use local resources.

3. One can speculate Rebel pilots perhaps had some sort of fancy mask they could quickly don in cases of imminent ejection. Apparently, the original idea was for the Rebel pilots to wear masks or full face helmets but George scrapped the idea because he felt it was important for the audience to see their faces. That line is probably a holdover from that earlier iteration.

4. I never thought they were limited to droids. I think they look for anything they can salvage, from droids, crashed ships, old equipment, etc.

5. Do we know all troopers aren't equipped with grappling hooks?

6. I've always wondered the canon explanation for this. I seem to recall their was some EU explanation that the speeders could be used to tow cargo but that seems a little weak to me.
