Star Wars: questions you've always wanted answers for

Come on, you know it was an holiday. Garage pick up was delayed by a day. So of course they were a few more bags n junk.

1. I always wondered about that too, for that matter, when they're running down the trench why don't one of the escort fighters pull up and drop speed a touch and drop back behind the TIES in the trench? But I suppose, like Wolfsburg suggests, perhaps all of the other fighters were too busy with the TIEs outside of the trench but if so, that makes them pretty lousy escorts in my opinion.

2. This is probably because using dewbacks was deemed to be more efficient because all that sand tends to mean lots of maintenance on mechanical systems, more than it would be worth. This doesn't mean that the Empire didn't have repulsorlift craft on Tattooine, it's possible because of maintenance they kept them in reserve for when speed is critical.

3. My guess is that the cockpit serves as an escape pod, sort like how the cockpit on the F-111 was originally designed to serve as an escape module for the crew instead of ejection seats.

4, 5, & 6 Got nothing there.

No 2. Tons of speeders on Tatooine but they use big lumbering lizards from the dropsite through the wastes to Jawas then to the Lars homestead THEN to Mos Eisley. Obviously off camera the Dewbacks are this planet's equivalent of the road-runner. :)

It could be that speeders are largely relegated to near homesteads and places like Mos Eisley where you're not far from civilization (relatively speaking) if your speeder breaks down. Out in the deep desert they probably regard dewbacks as much more reliable transportation, they don't break down. Besides, they probably also provide the Imperials a certain element of stealth, no engine noise and billowing cloud of sand to announce their presence from miles away, and speaking of clouds of sand, the entire point of patrolling is to see what you can see and it's kind of hard to see anything when your vehicle is kicking up sand all around you.

1. How did the trash monster get into the compactor to begin with?
2. If spirit Anakin is now Hayden-version Anakin, why wasn't spirit Obi-Wan changed to Ewan-version Obi-Wan? And also, spirit Yoda to younger CG Yoda? And where was spirit Qui-Gon?
3. With all of the changes made in the SE versions, why didn't George fix Vader's hidden wrist joint at the end of Jedi? After losing his hand to Luke, and then tossing the Emperor down the shaft, Vader falls down and helps to support himself by leaning his arm on a railing (you can see his stump), and midway up his forearm, it is bent over the railing. That has always bothered me.

But the mask was ditched and visor lightened so we could see the actors' faces. Some of us maintain that the mask is hanging out of camera shot, attached to the chair, and the pilots presumably have enough time to snap it on before ejecting, and the other visor closes automatically. The EU also came up with the notion that the chair had a protective clamshell that closed when ejecting. Don't have any pictures handy of that, though.

I've never heard about, or seen the picture, of the helmet with a mask! I don't know about a clamshell, but most old EU books said the pilot has some kind of emergency shield that envelopes them and keeps them somewhat warm if they are rescued fairly quickly.

And how garbage does a Star Destroyer generate? If any ship chucks out what looks like several thousand tons of broken machinery enough to disguise a freighter then they must be horrendously maintenance intensive. Is the internal volume of the ship stock full of spare parts?

My guess is that that junk was accumulated over a period then dumped. I doubt they dump that amount of trash every time they jump to hyperspace! Either way the Empire absolutely does not recycle!

The Dianoga got into the trash compactor same way the raccoons get into my garage. Someone left a space door open.

Short answer: Because that's the way Lucas wanted it.

Long answer: Luke had no connection to the younger Obi-Wan, only to the older man he knew as Ben. So if they had changed him to Ob-Ewan, Luke probably wouldn't have recognized him in his younger form. With Yoda...well, he'd still look like Yoda, but Luke knew him in his later years too, so there was really no reason to make him look younger. And that's why it was stupid for Lucas to change Sebastian Shaw into Hayden Christensen--Luke had no connection to Anakin before he became Vader, so he wouldn't recognize his younger form either. And Luke had no connection to Qui-Gon whatsoever, so there was no reason to show him (beside the fact that Qui-Gon didn't exist when the Original Trilogy movies were made, that is). An argument could be made that Luke would intuitively know it was Anakin and Obi-Wan because of The Force, but back here in the real world they're really nothing more than visual cues for audiences to recognize them. Just another of several reasons why Lucas' Special Editions are not-so-special.

My questions are focused more toward the production and design side of the films. I know I'll never get / find a list of every greeblie used in the SW universe (I can dream) but I would like to know:

What were the corridor and door pads on the Falcon made from?

What color is the actual cockpit door?

That's just 2 of the 14,593 questions I have. ;)

Go back to when we first see the Falcon in Docking Bay 94... when the camera pans across the ship there is NO radar dish. Why didn't they add that?

I've got one.

Why did Lucas think it was a good idea to make Leia Luke's twin sister? Especially when he'd already introduced the whole romantic subplot in the first two films? WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!

Also, "The Academy." What "Academy" is this? Luke talks about going to it, but says he hates the Empire, so, is it an IMPERIAL Academy? What's the deal?

Dia nogas were used to digest the organic waste I read somewhere. Mark Hamill recounts a story where he held up some styrofoam during the scene and to the tune of Chattanooga choo-choo said "Pardon me George, could this be dianoga poo poo? " Lucas who completely tired and frustrated of the shoot at this point put his foot on Hamill's chest and just pushed him under the water.

Vulcan science academy. Obviously wanted to jump franchises before the muppets and cgi were involved.

Re the Academy, my guess is that even though Luke might not have had much love for the Empire he certainly didn't hate the Empire at the beginning of ANH and the Academy was his only ticket off of Tattooine. I think in Luke's mind there were only 2 choices, go to the Academy and finally get off of Tattooine (even if it meant serving the Empire) or stand on his morals and spend the rest of his life rotting away on Tattooine wondering about what life would be like outside of Tattooine.

It would seem the Academy was independent, not Empire-run. At least not officially. Biggs was a graduate but working on a private frigate. He tells Luke "I'm not going to wait for the Empire to draft me into service". (This is all from the scene as scripted and filmed.) It would not be necessary for the Empire to draft graduates if the Academy was strictly a path to Imperial service.

It originated when Lucas threw in the line at the end of TESB where Yoda corrects Obi-wan and says "No, there is another", after Obi-wan states that Luke is "their last hope". Apparently at the time, Lucas didn't actually have a grasp on who this "other" was but thought it'd be cool to throw that wrinkle into the narrative. At some point, it was decided the other would be Luke's sister, however she wouldn't be introduced until the third trilogy. Along the way, Lucas decided he didn't want to do a third trilogy but felt like he still needed to address who this "other" person was. Unfortunately, he decided the easiest way to handle it would be to simply make Leia the sister, despite the fact this would introduce a very awkward, incestuous element to the first two films and make Obi-wan seem surprisingly dense since he should've known the "other" was Leia, given his role in hiding the Skywalker twins.

That's cause obi and yoda lived their lives fully as themselves. only anakin 'died' when he became darth vader ;o)

Adult Anakin was pretty much half darkside anyway, if they really wanted the good Anakin there it would be little yippie pod racing Anakin as a force ghost.
