Star Wars: Detours trailer

But if Star Wars hadn't done anything for you since 1982, it's time to move on with your life and fandom people.

Oh, Star Wars is doing something for me. It's just not being done by those are are actually controlling the franchise.

It looks fun to me. Personally, I like this stuff more than some of the "serious" takes on SW because I feel that Lucas CAN'T produce anything serious SW even when he tries.

I'm more offended by takes on the SW characters as "horror" (death trooper) or some of these other designs (female stormtroopers, etc).

Yeah, uh.... According to "Rebel Assault II", "Star Wars: Legacy" and "Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare", the armor worn by both male and female stormtroopers are indistinguishable. How exactly is that offensive?

The "female" stormtrooper with the form fitting armor and boobs. Like you said, the stormtrooper armor should be indistinguishable.

Man, it is not FOR us. I imagine kids would get a kick out of it and frankly, that is who Star Wars has always catered to, at least in my opinion. I think my nephews would dig it. Things like this are a foot into the Geekdom that is Star Wars, so how bad can it be?

I love Star Wars, but if it were my baby like it is George's, I would be trying to get as much mileage and new fans into my work as humanly possible. I think you all would too.

Oh, I have to echo what Bryan said...we are getting an influx of kick-ass Star Wars story telling from The Clone Wars series. Weekly...awesome.

No. And I don't say that as an opinion either. It ended up being made for kids. It was never always catered for kids.

And speaking as someone who only had the three movies as a toddler still in his lower single digits, the original movies were the best thing ever. Sometimes kids like serious films that aren't hogged down by "in your face" comic relief.

No? Are you forgetting the Ewoks? Wait, the Ewoks TV show? How about the Droids cartoon? Holiday Special, did you see that when it was released? Sorry man, it has always catered to kids. I was a young'n when all of this was released and LOVED it ALL. Their guest spot on The Muppets was killer to me at the time. I stayed home on a Saturday night to watch that.

Absolutely. I was 9 in '77 and Star Wars was 100% geared to kids around my age. We are the original demographic and experienced it first hand.

I remember A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. It seems that after Empire and the departure of producer Gary Kurtz, Lucas really did turn Star Wars into a kiddie fare. But for the original movie and Empire? No. Those were not catered towards children. It did the next best thing! Kids and adults loved it!

Most of the Star Wars themed shows targeting kids came about after Return of the Jedi which itself was obviously aimed at a younger crowd than the first two movies. This is probably due to George adopting a daughter in 1981. Now everything Star Wars is aimed at younger kids but it didn't start that way.

The Holiday Special was just a total misfire trying to mix Star Wars with the sophisticated brilliance of 70's variety shows. I was 9 or 10 when that came out and even then I knew it was crap.

That is just how you want to see it. I think the fact that he kept the toy rights is contrary to your position. Toys...there weren't many adults buying action figures for themselves, man. These movies were for kids. My parents took me to see them because I loved them. They do not care a lick about the story now, nor did they then.

As to "A New Hope", I remember it being "Star Wars". Jawas and "Utinni!", the comedy stylings of R2 and 3PO...yeah, you are looking at this as an adult now, not the child you were then. As the child I was then, I see what this will do and I would let my young nephews watch this and enjoy. Sure, there was a serious story but also had a lot of light hearted fare...to snare in the children.

I think to call them outright "kids films" is disingenuous. They were simple adventure movies that were geared as family entertainment. There are the darker more serious moments in all three original films for adults as well as light hearted moments for kids and action for everyone. That's why they were so successful and why my adult parents lined up to see them, even without me.

Now that said, how do you get the most bang for your buck when adults will just watch the film and be done with it? You market the hell out of it taking every angle you can and at this, George is a genius. The most ludicrous market, even at the time, was toys and other child related merchandise.

It wasn't until ROTJ that Star Wars took an honest dip into outright kids movie but even then, it was a family film, not kids. George certainly didn't ignore the kids though and just about every spin off of SW has indeed been directed exclusively to children. Nothing wrong with that, it's made him a very rich man!

It's a fine line but especially Star Wars & Empire are just flat out adventure movies with something for everyone.

I remember an interview with Lucas where he states the movies were for the teen crowd but as you said people want to see things a certain way so they will see it that way no matter what.

I can still remember quite clearly my somewhat negative reaction to RoTJ back in 1983. It wasn't too hard to see the difference in the intended audience even though I was still young and fell into the so called intended age group.

No doubt the first two movies had some moments targeting younger kids but on the whole I think there is a big difference in tone from the movies that followed.

Whatever the case it's his universe and he's welcome to do whatever he wants with it.

You could not be more wrong.

Yeah, and earth tone space hippies believe that if you create a machine to do the work for a man, you're taking something away from the man. It's an awe inspiring quote that, like your reply, doesn't say anything at all. And here I thought I was actually discussing why I thought the first two Star Wars movies weren't catered towards kids, but didn't go out of it's way not to include them in the enjoyment factor. Like Ghostbusters. A film that was not labeled as a kids movie, but kids loved it.
