Star Wars Andor (Disney+ TV series)

Smart move…smart move.

Finished it. Last half was good. First half was not so great for us and I was almost fast forwarding through some stuff. I had no interest or saw the value in most of the content of the first half. This should have been six episodes. I'm not that interested in seeing weddings, dancing, Senators whispering with double meanings too much, space fascists couples and their potential psycho mother in laws, bickering space morons doing rock paper scissors, etc. Did any of those space morons come back later for something? Were they establishing something I missed because I am the moron? All of that could have been compressed way down and accomplished the same thing without being such a slog or write some better spyfare content. Some really strange choices. I don't speak French, but I thought they were, I guess googling it just now they were not. But it was so close it ripped me out of the moment. Fine, they wanted to do some kind of callback to French resistance or what have you, but why use a sledge hammer method like that to force it through? Yeah ok, I get it. I could have figured it out myself without that. Just like I know the Empire is basically space NAZIs. Stole the fancy Tie Fighter. And never heard about it again. I thought maybe it's big secret was being indestructible as Cassian clearly proved it was over and over. LOL And I thought maybe that is why they wanted that mineral so bad it makes spacecraft industructable. But it was never gone into again. Got annoyed at use of our earthly terms... "p***** off", "spin doctor", "visa", "radio", etc. What happened to commlink? Did they ever say "radio" in the OT? Come up with some Star Warsey words. Saw Gerrera didn't have much to do. Disappointing, I was hoping to see some serious guerilla warfare. They were fueling that weapon right? We never saw them use it. Bummer. I guess I liked the first season better.

Yes, they were there to show us how Rebel cells are fragmented all over the place with no unifying organization yet. Between those idiots and Saw Gerrera as extremist, it shows us that it's not enough the simply be a rebel. They needed an Alliance to pull things together. So their story is somewhat tragic, because they had no guidance.

But I agree, we didn't need an episode and a half of them.

I don't speak French, but I thought they were, I guess googling it just now they were not.

Yes, so they were interesting. According to the BTS videos, it's a nonsense language that sounds like it might be French because it uses French-style voice inflections. Kind of like how most Star Wars languages (like Huttese and such) use English-language inflections. (Think about how young Anakin was verbally sparring in Huttese with Sebulba.) I thought that was clever, but yes, the French Resistance parallel was pretty heavy-handed.

Did they ever say "radio" in the OT? Come up with some Star Warsey words.

I think this was intentional. The Skywalker Saga uses more flowery, "fairy tale" styles of talking, but Andor is more fully grounded in our reality. If you're going to present it in our language anyway, why not use our words?

FWIW, I can't substantiate this statement, but I really feel like radio and commlink are two different things.

Saw Gerrera didn't have much to do. Disappointing, I was hoping to see some serious guerilla warfare.

Agreed, I guess he was there just to show us rebel extremism.

They were fueling that weapon right? We never saw them use it.

It's not a weapon. That device is a special kind of filter that allows Saw to steal the highly-volatile rhydonium fuel without getting killed. Saw now has "unlimited power" in the form of energy that he can pick up any time he wants. I gathered that such fuel access points aren't typically guarded because no one would be crazy enough to try to tap in. So Luthen was trying to help rebel cells unite by offering Saw this gift. It didn't work.

The Ghorman berets insulted the intelligence of the audience, just a bit (as did the 1940s clothing and fedoras)…

It reflects a profound lack of faith in the audience and clumsiness by the show creators. We see the analogy with our own history…this was unsophisticated and completely unnecessary:

I think it was refreshing to hear a new language with non english accent. It was prety smart to use French actors so that they all sounded the same.

When Rogue one came out, i thought that Saw Gerrera was too on the nose with his crazy talk and was way too different than his Clone Wars character. Andor bridges this gap nicely. Yes it would have been cool to see the Partisans in action but oh well.

(As in Rogue One), it's fun to see actual hanging catwalks, with the drooping hoses, in the Yavin set, that were just flat cutouts on the Shepperton set in '76. :)

Never even a glimpse of any Y-Wings! Off on some airfield just off camera I suppose...

Rewatched Rogue One... Saw's people are shown running out of their base, and we see one X-Wing parked, and then they just disappear as we cut in real time between our main characters escaping. The people and the X-Wing just vanish. I guess we're to assume they perished, but it was in the space of one three-second cutaway.

Is there a Stormtrooper armor discussion thread concerning the Rogue One version, which seems to have been duplicated accurately in Andor? I can't quite figure out what's going on in the "kidney plate" area. It's like it's three pieces now. Or there are black straps that create the illusion of gaps.

Watching Rogue One post-Andor; it has been completely altered for me.

The Cassian Andor Saga (includes Andor and Rogue One) really is the best Star Wars since the Original Trilogy…possibly since The Empire Strikes Back.

Sorry George…The Jar-Jar Binks Saga has to stand up and move farther down the bench, yet again.

That’s so cruel…

Just finished the last episode. Emotionally satisfying. I loved the emergence of Kleya as more than just Luthen's assistant. K-2SO was a welcome bit of levity which made this feel more like the OT. It felt like the entire Andor series gradually slid more into line with the rest of Star Wars.

Also, I watched the full credits of the last episode - well, listened to them. I really enjoyed how they used the end credits to further tie into the original Star Wars films. If you haven't, I recommend going back and watching the full credits. It probably had more impact on me coming straight out of the show, but it's worth listening to.

I will say that while I liked the score for the series, it could've been lighter and more "adventurous" at times (more John Williams-esque). But I guess Tony Gilroy wanted a somber tone, which I understand. But there were times I felt the onscreen action was lighter than the score - or sometimes the lack of music - reflected.

I kind of feel like this could act as a conclusion to Star Wars, even though it's still a direct prequel to Rogue One and the rest of the franchise. Like, if they never made another Star Wars project, this felt like a fairly conclusive ending to not only this series, but the whole franchise. I know that's not going to happen, but you could probably use this as an ending point if you don't wish to watch any more new Star Wars.

The only issue I had going from Andor straight to Rogue One is the massive pacing difference between the two. After going through the whole season of Andor with it's slow burn, then into Rogue One it felt like R1 began and was over before I had a chance to blink.

I'm like, "Huh, wait, what? Its over already? Why isn't this movie 9 hours long?"o_O
