Star Wars Andor (Disney+ TV series)

Absolutely loved this episode. And the Ties! The best sequence in the best episode of the best Star Wars show yet!

As for the Tie costume:

Short version is it’s a reworked R1 suit. To me it looks like they used the pic in the Costumes Book as their main reference down to the cog placement and missing chestbox cone nut.

I don’t hate this new variation, but I do hate that the R1 suits are being destroyed to create them.

The cogs. I hate them a lot. I make accurate cogs so this one really hurts

. Productions: DM me your address and I will burry you in free accurate cogs

. The cogs on this helmet match none seen on screen ever, but if you lazily search Etsy for “Tie Pilot Decal” these exact cogs are the first thing that pops up. They look bigger than 2.75” but it could be placement. I would research it, but I don’t want to look at them any longer than I have to.

Here’s the break down:

Repainted R1 helmet with cogs identical to Echobase on Etsy. It’s been suggested by a couple that the lenses look different, but I don’t think so.

R1 ground officer flight suit (black nylon, black thread, silver R1 cogs.)

R1 ground crew commpad (same as Jyn and Bohdi)

R1 code cyl

R1 armor with repainted R1 (MonCal) box. LED indicators in switches, red and white indicators cut down/recessed, tiles painted (red tile, two blue painted lighter than R1) bottom greeblies replaced with washers

R1 (3M) hoses

R1 gloves

Boots are reproduction lugged sole jack boots (no top buckle)

R1 belt with no boxes

That about covers it..

I’m sure better screen caps will show up, but here’s what I was able to grab quickly.

I grew up with the originals and saw them in the theatre. I’m loving Andor - I just don’t think that competently written characters and a truthfully penned world of believable motivations is reliant on including urinating soldiers, prostitutes and sex scenes. Star Wars for good or bad is a fantasy space world created primarily for 12 year olds, it’s not just a visual context for any dramatic content. Again, I’m loving Andor.
Actually, that's peak Star Wars. I was younger than 12 when I first saw RotJ and for a moment I suddenly stopped thinking about good vs bad

Big "thank you!" for that breakdown!! I've not seen any of the films or tv shows after Jedi, so I must have been thinking of the early R1 compare pics - PHEW!!!

Working that out would have gotten right on my AT-ATs for the next 48 hours lol.

It's in the episode where they rescue Leia (yet again), this time from the Inquisitor base. I think it might be the second or third to last episode? It was beyond stupid so it's understandable if you mentally blocked it out. lol!

And I think they strongly hinted that K2 would appear in season 2 of Andor? I know Alan Tudyk was initially attached to this season but later said plans changed, as I recall.

Didn't Luthen's ship (in episode 4) have Alan Tudyk's voice? That portends a Jarvis/Vision origin.

That. Was. Intense. Wow. Great episode. Reminded me of the painstakingly choreographed action scenes of "Terminator 2". The only downside of this show is that you have to wait another week for the next installment. The good thing is, there are two more arcs to look forward to. :)

The McLaren F1 Team Base was used in Andor as a set.;)

Does that indicate that TIE fighters are propelled by McLaren engines? I always wondered why they sounded like them... :D

I recognised the Barbican Centre in London (with its brutalist architecture) as a place in Coruscant.

Karn's bedroom was obviously inspired by the living pods of the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo (which was recently demolished). Those had similarly angled integrated storage/electronics units on one wall and a window at the far end.

Edit: (Found it)
Karn's office pod is very reminiscent of an computer workstation prototype, supposedly from an exhibition in Hannover in 1969 ... or a 1970's Soviet sci-fi movie. The origin is unclear, but that image has circulated a lot and it looks like the art directors here have been inspired by this.

Karn's mom's "TV" having 4:3 aspect ratio and rounded corners like a real-world CRT is a bit too real-world for me. I think it would have been more Star Wars-y if it had been more like Vader's seven-sided screen in ESB or 1:1 like the screens on a Star Destroyer's bridge.
