Star Trek vs. Star Wars: Where Do Your Loyalties Lie?

Star wars

Probably because I played with the toys and in 79 as a 5 year old my dad said he was taking me to see star wars and instead he made a mistake and we saw star trek. Super creepy!!! Couldn't sleep that night.

That said we made a tradition of it through the years. So I still like both but tng if what hooked me.

Star Trek and Star Wars are different universes. No comparison is possible, just as I don't compare any of them to Dune or to Stargate. They are independent.

Old Star Trek up to Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country is the real Star Trek. TNG is sort'a OK I guess. Voyager is meh. DS9 is crap. Enterprise is crap, and the movies in the new timeline is an abomination.

this thread needs an official photo.. may I submit the following :D

Ah, the age-old question.....Star Trek vs. Star Wars: Which do you you prefer?
This is a VERY unscientific question I wanted to inflict upon the RPF Legions: which do you prefer, and why? I know that we love all aspects of multiple genres, but these seem to be the two biggest ones. So, I thought it would be interesting to hear which you prefer.
Now, don't be shy, but there are a few ground rules:

1. ONLY Star Trek and Star Wars! I know that we love others, and this thread fails/sucks/is stupid/etc. without the mention of '-------'!, but I'm just interested in the two Star entries.

2. Be Civil! This, of course, goes without saying.

3. Non-Canon material is allowed.
After all, it's part of the fandom, so it's included.

4. There is NO Rule Four!

5. No touching of the hair or face! (Of course!)

All set? Let's go! :)

I don't really want more SW, the first three films are enough for me I guess, hard to mine the prequels for lasting value.
I DO however want Trek back on TV done right because I think it's about us and where we could end up if we boldy go.
So there you are.

Star Trek had shows with female leads. Star Trek featured gay characters. Star Trek had more alien characters as actual characters than background details.

Plus when it came to either franchise creating a cute, small, furry alien race that helped save the day, I think we can all agree which one did it better.

Star Trek featured gay characters.

I've watched 3 of the 5 series and all of the movies and don't remember there ever being a single gay character in any of them...and I kept my eye open for it. Which characters are you referring to?

For me, Star Wars will always be my first love, probably mostly due to the fact that I saw that one first, but I like both franchises. I also think Star Wars had far better alien designs. Star Wars species come in all sizes and forms, whereas Star Trek species are barely distinguishable from humans.

Mirror Ezri, Mirror Leeta, bonus round for mirror Kira and regular Dax for being bisexual.

A year ago I would have said Star Wars, no contest. I've been watching the OOT and a lot of Trek over the last year and now I don't think I can say I like one more than the other, they are just too different to make an honest comparison. If it was a desert island situation with only being able to watch one for the rest of my life...still tough but I'd probably go with Trek, I can close my eyes and watch all 3 Star Wars movies (the ones that matter to me ;) ) in my head. While there is a lot of Trek I've never seen or only seen a few times. If my daughter was awake she would be giving me a long list of reasons why SW trumps ST, but you know how padawans can be, young and stubborn, like Wesley Crusher. ;) :lol
My house has hundreds of Star Wars toys in it and only 4 Star Trek toys (the Trek stuff is mine)

Well about Trek not having gay characters, that is both true and false. There had been a gay storyline written into TNG but it was cut by the network. There was talk of having Malcolm Reed be gay but it was dropped. It's supposed to just not matter in the future, which is a theme done by other shows (Torchwood, for example). However, it was never really fully and blatantly addressed on screen. This is true. However, it's not because they didn't exist. I mean in our Trek series the captain is gay and married to a science officer who is on another ship. It's a NBD thing.

I think it's more likely to see a same sex relationship in Star Trek than Star Wars, however. Not because I think Star Wars is any sort of homophobic, but because Star Trek deals a lot with the characters and interpersonal relationships (at least in the series stuff, the movies are a bit more actiony, but can you really separate the two? Should this be Star Trek Series vs Star Trek Movies vs Star Wars?). Star Wars is based on a bunch of people for whom an emotional relationship is banned because it might bring out passion and passion can be used as a trigger for the dark side and all that. So to see ANY relationship in Star Wars is more unusual than it is in Star Trek, let alone a same sex one.

Personally I don't really care. I don't see either as homophobic or at all anti-gay just because they aren't there. Star Trek has been groundbreaking in dealing with firsts. TV's first scripted interracial kiss (not first ever, as a Nancy Sinatra special that aired months before had her kissing Sammy Davis Jr. on the cheek so that, technically, counts) was a big deal. The fact that Kirk didn't want to kiss her in the show had nothing to do with her being another race and everything to do with him being her superior officer and being forced to do it.

I mean just because neither has had a redhead kiss another redhead doesn't mean I think either is at all anti-redhead.

I love both series but I favor Star Wars more.

I only watched TOS as reruns but I was around when the Star Wars phenomenon began in 1977 and watched it grow and evolve afterwards.

Star Wars me since I little I've always wanted cool force powers. Plus all the trek people I knew were puzzle eaters and tried to force it down everyones throat. I'll try to watch them now that I'm older to see what's the big deal.

Talking about gay characters, I always figured Spock to be one. He just acted weird and screamed gay / metro sexual to me. But maybe he was ahead of his time, plus it was the 60's..so yeah. Not making fun of him, so don't get your torches and pitch forks. Crap all he Jedi could be since they don't show love really.

Misty you going to Star Wars derby?

Futurism of the 50's and 60's always seemed either decidedly utopian or dystopian. Star Trek was a rich mythos but, at it's heart was, and remains a utopian vision of our future. I didn't like episodes about preaching the religiosity of morals and ethics to fuzzy wuzzies - and there were many episodes like these.

In that setting came SW which was a breath of fresh air simply because it didn't have to be all about moral lessons. It was a space opera where I could actually relate to the characters. They had petty arguments and were undeniably fallible.

The setting also seemed more real because it wasn't perfect. Space ships were actually dirty and worn. When Luke calls the falcon "a piece of junk" I was completely enthralled because, as a sci fi fan who was able to predict movie story arcs, I really didn't know what to expect next. I walked into the theater expecting a movie about robots (my words). Then I thought it would all take place on Tatooine ... then it went into space .... SW made me me lose my bearings in a good way.

And yet, in that bizarre setting, it was ironic that I could relate to the characters more than in any other sci fi film/show before. I was an 11 year old kid who could relate to Luke who felt torn with commitments, who felt a longing for greater things in his future, who felt petty teen jealousy over a girl and who struggles with self doubt. In 1977 it seemed very original for a sci fi film to be about these things.

I enjoyed ST but how could I relate a seasoned star ship captain in the same way?

I enjoy them both but SW really rocked my world.

The first Star Wars movie was amazing back in 1977 because it brought a whole new dimension to the movies with it’s ground-breaking special effects, as others have said. If you weren’t around then, you can’t understand how much excitement it elicited and how much potential it created for the movie industry. But, other than that, the storyline is just basic good-guys vs. bad-guys and other than the wonderful concept of ‘the force’, or inner strength, it really doesn’t have much going for it, in my opinion. I couldn’t even bear to watch any of the movies past the first trilogy.

Star Trek, on the other hand, is a fully fleshed-out world, with complex characters, real science integration and memorable characters and ideas. There is just no comparison. The fact that it was a TV series had it’s advantages and disadvantages though, so if you are just comparing movies to movies, that is different. I’ve never watched the Trek movies more than a few times each. The many series though, I watch over and over and over.

TREK for me by a long-shot!

In TOS he had multiple relationships with females. He wasn't a very good Vulcan. :lol
