Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Encore!

Since the heads of those who watched this have surely melted, RAIDERS-style, I shall carry on defending actual TREK in your stead.

Grew up watching TOS reruns, the original crew movies. Was super excited for TNG...then DS9...kinda tuned out if Voyager...loved Enterprise...

And a fan off all the new stuff. LD, Discovery, SNW!!!!!!

Sure it's not for everyone, and yes some episodes are out there (its Trek...always has had some weird stuff!), but with seasons being renewed obviously it works for a lot of people!

Is there anyone who both likes musicals and disliked this episode? Because I think that has a lot more to do with the reception of the episode than the actual quality (which was good, I might add).

Weird space phenomenon makes the crew drunk and horny: a Trek classic
Weird space phenomenon makes the crew sing and dance: Trek is dead

The Klingon Ship really was on their starboard bow.

Star Trek: Discovery is as far removed from Trek as you can get.

Is dysfunctional, dystopian, garbage where they all are facing complete and total meltdown crises EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. Every moment of their lives.

I don’t even care about season 5. I have no intention of watching it.

Lower Decks is vulgarity disguised as comedy.

The only good show is Prodigy, which has been dumped and we don’t know how we’ll watch season two yet.

The reason for it happening to them was well explained and they tied it into the arc well.

I was dreading it going into the episode, but wound up thinking that it worked.

But, why go to the trouble of Spock and Chapel getting together just to break up 2 episodes later? I’s this the explanation for why she was in love with him in TOS:TRT, but he didn’t reciprocate?

TOS:TRT stands for The Original Series:The Real Trek.

I think M’Benga’s story is more of a Human discovery than Spock’s.

He was the butcher that killed the Klingons because he felt forced to, though he didn’t want to.

He tried to rebuild his life, lost his wife and then his daughter gets an incurable disease and he had to let her go to save her.

He’s becoming my favorite character in this series.

Spock is just Butt-Joke boy at this point.

And it is the last series that I’ll watch on Paramount Puss. I have NO DESIRE for the Discovery spin off, Academy series.

Unless they make the Seven of Nine spin off that I actually want, I’m out altogether.

I have nothing against Star Trek experimenting with content. ST The Lower Decks is a successful venture in a new comedy direction. I also understand that playing the same character in a series can get monotonous, but this is the second season and you can't possibly get bored of your character so soon. Each series comes with episodes that are...odd. This episode takes the cake.

I really love the series so far, but this "High School Musical" episode should be purged from the servers, and never make it to syndication. In fact, I think the creators owe us an episode. Instead of a 10 episode season they should do an eleventh episode to make up for episode 9. Dancing Klingons is where I draw the line.

Just my thoughts.

I loved the musical episode. There. I said it.

Musicals and Trek are not my cup of tea. But…

I also don’t like flat-out comedy episodes like “A Piece of the Action”, “The Trouble With Tribbles”, or “I, Mudd”…

I’m also one of those weirdos that prefers the dull, sleep-inducing, monochromatic seriousness of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

It's such a genius idea inserting a musical episode in a season filled with regular episodes. Imagine if JMS had thrown one into Season 3 of Babylon 5, or Ron Moore put in a musical episode during the Cylon occupation of New Caprica... that would have elevated their respective shows to uber sci-fi status! It's just too bad those shows didn't have a talent like Akiva Goldsman...

I have room in my heart for both styles.

It’s abundantly clear that Roddenberry preferred the serious, cerebral, dry, sci-fi procedural style of the first pilot, the first movie, and the first season of TNG.

But the wit, banter, character relationships, and humor Gene Coon brought to TOS are key factors in its ongoing popularity.

There’s room for both, and STAR TREK isn’t quite STAR TREK if the scale slides too far in one direction or the other.

Funniest bit from that review:

“…There was no song for M’Benga alas – he and Chapel didn’t feel strongly enough about last week’s events to let it go – which is a shame because I’d have loved to have seen the Doctor prancing around sickbay, tunefully recalling his time as the Butcher of J’Gal…”
