Star Trek movie (2009) tricorder - Playmates toy version

We need one of our trek graphic guys to make a professional looking replacement graphic to use. I think I'm gonna replace the front with an aluminum plate (unless the real one is actually chrome)

I agree. That sticker could use some work.

Most of you finding these at TRU? I was curious since the release date isnt until the 19th and even the TRU website shows them as pre-order only right now.

Many TRUs all over the USA are breaking the street date, but it seems to be hit and miss. There are also reports of the movie toys showing up early at some WalMarts, but I don't know if the tricorder was an early arrival there.

I heard K-Mart is stocking the figures, so you might check there as well. :)

All I have is a Wal-Mart (not even a Supercenter...), so I'll have to wait for evrything to be released there. :(

EDIT - They proboly won't even stock them.....

Just tried walmart and they didnt have anything trek. Why is TRU closed on Sundays... bogus. Granted they suck, but Playmates toys are what got me into props. Im kinda bummed that they come ready to go though, I used to really enjoy putting on all the decals.

You know, what's wrong with that communiator, conceptually, is that Kirk and Spock are calling the ship for beam-up... what should happen, is that the comm should have clips of the Enterprise answering YOU...

Any online stores carrying these for non-us customers?

Looks like entertainmentearth.com has the movie tricorder in stock and ships internationally. They also have the DST TOS tricorder (exclusive medical version) up for pre-order that you were looking for in another thread, and it's supposed to be released at the end of May 2009. See links below.

Damn that phaser looks stupid. The comm doesnt look too bad. The tricorder actually is pretty cool. Of the three its the only one I really like. The comm is just okay, but at least you can look at it and know what its all about. The phaser still looks like something buzz lightyear would be carrying around.

Found this interview with the prop master on the new Trek movie, Russell Bobbitt. He essentially says he wasn't a fan-boy and therefore didn't feel locked into what "should be" in his props. Here's what he said about the movie tricorder:

"How large is the tricorder as compared to the original from TOS? It’s not as small as a TNG tricorder, is it?

Bobbitt: There were several items where we made great leaps in design choice. One is the Tricorder. I presented a TOS Tricorder to the actors and their reaction was that the size was too big with the amount of action there is in our film. So I immediately went to my ace-in-the-hole designer, Doug Brody, an adamant trekker who became our tech advisor. I gave him the task of designing a smaller version of the Tricorder, which would not be like any other, but would include all the elements needed to scan the environment appropriately."

He also talks about the movie communicator and phaser.

I don't mean to sound negative... as I love Diamond Select... but how come Playmates was able to use chrome plastic on their stuff and Diamond Select couldn't?

I mean, Playmates sucks and they were able to pull it off.

This is a guess, but probably because Playmates is big enough to get their Trek stuff into all the major chains and sell tens of thousands of units; DST, meanwhile, is not in the major chains (except recently, with a few Trek items at TRU) and sells a few thousand of each item mostly online or in small comic shops.
