Star Trek movie (2009) tricorder - Playmates toy version

I was not a comic book kind of guy growing up and that’s intriguing to the directors that I work with, because I am not attached to what “should be.” I am open to different interpretations on props, which allows for enhancing a story with no limitations. So often great ideas will never be developed because the lore of what has been created in the past. It is a goal of mine to help develop new looks and ideas that aid in moving a story forward. - Russell Bobbitt

Well that kind of implies that there are "great ideas" that were hobbled by what had come before, so they had no choice but to throw away the past so that their great ideas could flourish!

So... where are these great ideas? :lol

Hm, Bobbitt... that's a name that makes me wince a little. :eek :lol

Anyone know this "ace-in-the-hole designer, Doug Brody, an adamant trekker" who designed the movie tricorder? He doesn't seem to have any previous credits (at least on imdb.com) or even a credit for Star Trek-2009.

That's what I find so strange about the new props. They're somehow both completely different yet essentially the same. It makes sense that a prop designer would want to put a little of his own design aesthetic into the props, but I'm just not "feeling" where he's coming from on these particular items.

I think if he'd really wanted to be edgy and take the prop designs in a different direction and not be so beholden to what came before we should be seeing props that were genuinely different and perhaps a bit more bold in their design flair.

I appreciate how he mentioned in the full article the logic behind making the tricorder smaller, and I agree with that rational. But the communicator looks so mundane and 21st century, and the phaser comes from such a drastically different design style the three props don't seem like they really belong together.

I thought so too, I kinda assumed it to be some kind of older survival pack kind of com unit when I first saw it.

Me Too. Remember that the Reliant was using wrist communicators at the time. And the Enterprise was on a training assignment with Cadets. So, I always believed that the metal boxes on WOK were "cadet" issue that were used for training, while the wrist comms were the standard issue. Had the Enterprise not been on a training assignment with kids, they would have had wrist comms too.

Well, the closest TRU to me had nothing. I called two other semi-local stores to ask if they had anything in yet, and I might as well have been speaking Klingon to them. I don't know how much more descriptive I could have gotten than, "new Stat Trek movie toys, specifically the role-play pieces like the phaser, tricorder, and communicator." I even had to say "phaser gun" at one point so they understood what I meant. :rolleyes So embarrassing! And in the end... they didn't have them anyway. Or so they said. Ah, well... I'll just wait until my local store gets them in.

Checked out TRU on the way home, they had the Tri, Phaser, and Comm. If the sounds from the toys are any indication of the film sounds then I am extremely underwhelmed. The Tricorder has a big ALPHA (Next Gen) type display and makes a sound like a teletype machine. The Phaser sound is crap, it sounds like a gunshot, not a phaser, and all you get from the Comm is ReKirk and ReSpock's voices. Meh.

Actually as I understand the wrist comms weren't working all that well in that even though they made sense for the technology to progress, they weren't as iconic as the original communicators. Kirk's flipping of the communicator open had become iconic and didn't appear in the TMP. People missed it. So they redesigned a new communicator to be closer to the original. In retrospect it was probably a bit too big and clunky... but at least it allowed us to see Kirk do his signature flip open.

Of course I don’t particularly care for these new props… but with the exception of the uniforms, there isn’t much to come from this move I do like… so I just leave it at that.

I stopped at TRU and they had the role play toys but not the ship. Im almost upset I bought these. Accurate or not...they suck! Im so no excited for this movie. Trek is dead... :-(

saw some of the new figs and the enterprise at walmart tonight, nothign else though :(

Anybody in Canada finding them?

Hello from Windsor Ontario.
I went to the local TRU and was told they would have them in 2 to 3 weeks!
To be totally honest this store generally sucks at getting anything useful so I do not expect anything.
It is also the reason I pre-ordered mine through a local comic shop. Bit more expensive but I am assured of getting them.
Latter, Petseal

So, should I get them or wait until June when they hit the clearance shelf?

I really don't get it. The TRU's near me have full shelves of this...stuff :confused

As for me,...it's just not hitting "it" with me, so if I get it....it will be on clearance:sleep

I have been trying to figure out what TRU was for the longest time... it just now dawned on me that you people are saying Toys R Us. I must be smarter when I'm on vicodin.

I had no clue "Wally World" was Wal-Mart for the longest time. Who hell gives Wal-Mart a nickname, let alone a longer nickname, completely negating the purpose of a nickname in the first place?

NakedMoleRat....dont be a dummy like me... wait for clearance. I know that with one exception (the bajoran tricorder) Playmates never got any of these right... But if the real props are even close to this small and clumsy they really really really suck (and should hang JJ). The tricorder reminds me more than anything of that TOS keychain tricorder they made a while back. I feel like im going to crush them. Ill see the movie, but im really no excited!

Ditto. I am excited to see the movie, and do like the uniforms though.:thumbsup

Wally World is where the Griswalds go in National Lampoon's Family Vacation. I love the movie, that's why I call it that.

Figures and ship at Wal-Mart
Figures, Ship, Bridge Playset at Target
Role Playing Toys, Figures, Ship at Toys-R-Us.

I may pick up the Tricorder and Comm.
