This is what I got when I ordered a can of pre-1998 GM15, compared with a sample of 7173 from back in the day. It's too light and too gold. Label gives an alternate color code of WA929L.

If you have a sample or photo of a GM15 that matches, I'd love to see it.

Aka WA216B; here's that color against 7173 when I was investigating color codes a couple years ago. It's a touch too saturated but it's the best color match I know of so far. (It looks closer in the photo than it does in hand.)

My recollection is that the Plasti-Kote name for 7173 was "silver sand metallic." Now, there is a GM15 version with that name but the color chip I found online also didn't match. Mind checking if you have that one in your books and, if you do, sharing what it looks like? Thanks.

I do. And I also have the old cans of 7173 and 7179 as well.. Here is Marble head on the left. And GM15 on the left

This version of GM15 aka GM15U aka WA914K, looks promising. No idea if it's from before '98 but the color chip is a warm medium gray, so it's on the right track.

Yes I've contacted Autopaint, they are in a different city to me and may not ship paints, I'll see what they come back with

The madness deepens. I just bought a GM dealership color chip book off eBay; it runs from the mid '80s up to 1995, which I'm assuming is when HMS Mike began using 7173 (it started showing up on screen some time in '96 IIRC.)

Hopefully I can find the match and get the exact WA color code.

I will tell you. Paints colors recycle. And some of the new paints look like the old ones. But with new paint code numbers

If you have an automotive supply shop that does off the shelf car paints pre-mixed then Vauxhall Smoke Silver is a great, modern day equivalent.

Master Replicas replica, HMS kit built up by HMS and a GMRos early 2000s replica (which is a tad undersized) and the reverse of a VOY PADD made by me paint with Vauxhall Smoke Silver.

Do you know the paintcode for that? We had Holden/ Vauxhall models here for a while.

Color code book is here! I went through all the years of GM paint codes to find the closest ones. I took comparison photos of each under direct sunlight and in shade.

First up, here's the one I think Plasti-Kote was matching. W15 Silver Sand Gray Poly, aka 32Y-8376 aka 90T-5701. Googling those latter codes don't match paint colors, but a search for "W15 Silver Sand" turns up a 1984 Pontiac color code of WA8311. Plasti-Kote's brand name for 7173 was Silver Sand Metallic, so I'm like 90% sure this was what the code was. It's almost spot-on, but in person the real 7173 is a tiny -- and I mean tiny -- bit warmer than the color chip. But this should be choice #1 if you can get it.



Next up in "close enough" is a 1992 code, GM18U Med. Gray Poly, aka WA9289. It's a touch too dark but it's a warmer tone that matches 7173 a bit better. The difference looks greater in the photos than it does in person.



And a 1995 GM code, GM15U Med. Gray Met. aka WA9739. It's pretty beige, but is closer than the GM18 WA216B I'd found before.



There's also a couple non-GM ones I noticed that are okay matches, a Subaru color 49B Slate Metallic from 1995 and a Toyota color 923 Silver Taupe Metallic, also from '95.
