Just because fans say they can do better doesn't mean they actually want to. And those who would? Well, they're already doing it.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

This fan actually wants to. This fan has been a film student in fits and starts as health and finances have allowed for longer than he likes to think about. This fan has a pretty thorough understanding of the demands of scriptwriting beyond just the story, but also the realistic ability to make it happen, and the storytelling beats that need to be met to keep an audience from getting bored. This fan re-wrote Nemesis out of sheer need for a better movie to end TNG's film series, and ended up with one his non-Trekkie friends said they would have seen at least twice in theaters.

But this fan has had zero luck breaking into Hollywood, and isn't sure he wants to. But, sadly, the properties this fan enjoys writing and would love to work in aren't available for indie film-makers, being in the hands of some pretty massive mega-corps who prefer a sure thing.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Seeing as there is no way they're gonna start over anyway, This kind of excites me.

I used to hate fast and furious. But now that I've seen them all, they've improved quite a lot. The fact is, they're a better series than JJtrek. The plots actually work and even though it's pretty extreme sometimes, there is actually a character core. JJtrek does not have this

Re: New STAR TREK 3

For the record, anyone who isn't sure about his f an f contribution should check out the fourth one, fast and furious. It's pretty damn good and it has a ton more soul than the current trek

Re: New STAR TREK 3

I love most of Pegg's work, even as far back as Spaced, but I wonder if his inclusion creatively will result in even more "nudge-nudge, win-wink" antics. The reboot movies are fun action romps, but overall feel like satire. Or Hollywood actors playing Star Trek the role playing game.

Personal opinion: If Pegg was the sole writer for Star Trek 3 his comedic talents might tend to override the script. However, I can't imagine everyone else on the production staff would simply step back and let him stray too far from the "Star Trek Formula", so I'm interested in seeing what he brings to the movie.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

Let me guess he'll play a pissed off alien/genetic freak who is mad at the Federation for something. He'll have five times the strength of a human and fly around in a bad ass ship that outguns the Enterprise by about 1,000,000 to 1.

Meanwhile the Federation will suddenly forget they can use transporter technology to beam to the next galaxy and that they can bring people back to life with magic Khan blood.

Old Kirk and Spock will show up and remind us of better days.

Sadly, that's probably not too far off.

We already had a high ranking Starfleet officer go rogue, a Romulan miner/world-wrecker, and super-man Khan... what's left?
Maybe Cranston will be the guy that created the whining whale probe.

I heard that his character is so evil that he just watches Q's daughter die and doesn't try to save her.

Re: New STAR TREK 3

I'm not a big fan of reboots, I'd rather see good writing with established characters and history. I see a lot of retconning and stuff like this in comics as well and it just turns everything into a big mess. I can't imagine trying to explain Star Trek history now for a new fan or child, just being introduced to it. That would take a bit of time and patience. For me right now Star Trek is best represented by James Cawley's work on his webseries, it's really fantastic. However if people like the new stuff , that's fine, it doesn't affect me at all, to each their own!

Re: New STAR TREK 3

I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion but I thought the two JJ star treks were ****ty.

NOT at first, mind you. The first time I saw the first reboot I was giddy. It was exciting and the cast was incredible, plus it looked amazing. But when you watch it again the plot holes just start to eat it alive. It makes the finding God movie look well thought out by comparison.

The second movie didn't even get a second viewing. Even at first look it couldn't stand up to the massive plot holes. Also, it was the first time since Wrath of Khan that I wasn't there for opening day of Star Trek. They actually found a way to make me ambivalent about Star Trek (which may be impressive in itself).

For this third one, as much as it actually causes me pain to say it...I might actually pass on seeing a Star Trek movie in theaters.

I'd come back if they could keep all these new effects, the new phasers, new ship design. I didn't even have a problem with the lens flares. I LIKE lens flares. Just dump this stupid new timeline. Dump the idea that Starfleet promotes cadets to Captain (then back to cadet, then back to captain!) Like there's only 10 people total in all of Starfleet...thats not a star fleet...thats barely a star club. Starcasualinformalgathering. Dump the idea of transporting to other systems and ships that have been moving AWAY at max warp for over an hour. Also dump the stupid "kirk bangs all women' parody. It really was funny the first time, and even funnier when Deforest Kelly mentioned it in one of the movies, but the truth is, in the entire original series, he got with 7 possible, 4 confirmed women total. Even Picard had 5 or 6 if you count the girl from Insurrection and his wife from inner light. Let it go already. Tired joke is tired.

Where have you been for the past 2-6 years that you could possibly think yours is an unpopular opinion? Quite the opposite in fact. People have been crying about it since the first movie came out and even more popped up after the second.
