Star Trek Section 31 Reviews Are Starting to Roll In...

Yep, that's more fuel for my suspicion. Probably an AI-generated script that they didn't spend enough time cleaning up. You end up with lots of stereotypes and overused plot points, and it's emotionally tone-deaf. It wanders in & out of self-parody.

But are there ENOUGH people (consumers of said product) that enjoy this? Like this? Support this?

Does the plethora of online content/streaming content numb the populace into accepting this stuff?

Sorry to say this, but anyone who watches this on Paramount Plus, is part of the problem.
Everyone wants better Star Trek but if people continue to stream their "content" it only contributes to their immediate viewing figures and emboldens and encourages them to make more of this dreck.

I’m hoping the fact that this is a movie and not a series is a good sign. Maybe it’s a way to finish up contract elements with Kurtzman and move on.

"It’s not incoherent, but suffers from the same issue that blighted Discovery, where you’re watching a dramatized synopsis rather than a script. There are thematic and plot beats that rhyme with each other, but the meat joining them all together isn’t there. It’s just stuff that happens."

"It doesn’t help that the plot (credited to Kim and Lippoldt) is very much of the “and then this happens” variety that they warn you about in Film School 202. So many major moments in the film are totally unearned, asking you to care about characters you’ve only just met and don’t much like. There’s a risible scene at the end where two people who haven’t really given you the impression they’re into each other have to hold hands and stare into their impending doom. The pair in question have shared their backstories with each other, but there’s no suggestion that they are anything more than just people working together on a job, let alone friends."

This all reeks of AI-generated script content.
True and sad. I really wanted to like it. I agree that Discovery was a let down as well.

Frank Scheck of THR had the same thoughts, noting that Michelle Yeoh thrives when she's able to lean on her abilities as an action actress. With Section 31 being one of the only upcoming Yeoh movies promising action and big fight scenes, it should be a treat to witness, but the movie falls short of delivering a script as worthy of its star:
SHE'S 62 YEARS OLD.
I don't understand these people who love Michelle Yeoh. Her acting isn't great - I honestly think she gets a pass because English isn't her first language, so it can be easy to dismiss any poor choices on her heavy accent. All these critics saying "the script let her down," well, maybe she did the best she could with a sucky script, but even they are admitting they like her because of her stunt work. And now that she's in her 60s, it's pretty unrealistic to expect her to rely on her "abilities as an action actress." They're bending over backwards to not lay any blame on her for her part in this. Sure, blame lies with the writing, but also the casting. As others have said, her popularity is what got this project greenlit. Her having Oscar clout means she had more control over the projects she took, and she read this script and said "okay."

I pay for Paramount plus and I can assure you I will not be watching this, ever. I still watch a lot of Trek on the platform, but I stopped watching the Trek projects that aren't good. I did not like Yeoh's character on Discovery - by that I mean that I didn't like Yeoh's character choices or the writing of the character. I don't care for any of the Mirror Universe overacted characters that has been seen in prior Trek series. It's okay in small doses, but overacted "evil" characters are not enough to build a story around on their own. It could be done well when they wanted - DS9 did some more interesting things with the Mirror Universe, particularly with Chief O'Brien's mirror universe "Smiley" character (it helps that Colm Meany is a legitimately great and underappreciated actor). I stopped watching Discovery and Strange New Worlds after multiple attempts to even enjoy them for what they were as they got steadily worse. I've watched all of Picard, including rewatching season 3, but I won't go back and watch season 2 for sure and probably won't rewatch season 1 either (it was much better than season 2 but still had a lot of issues).

Streaming platforms definitely notice when users stop watching, like series' that people don't complete or movies they never finish, so hopefully there's enough of us to offset any "fans" that are just watching this because it's branded as Star Trek or the ones that are hate-watching.

Really? After hearing all this and the horrid pictures I wanna see because I can't but think, can it be that bad? As in, as bad as they're saying. Kinda like driving by a car wreck, everyone has to stop and look which is why your 15 minute drive takes an hour...

I'm not shocked. Discovery sucked, this sucks. The only good thing Star Trek right now is SNW, and it's going to be a bit before we get any more episodes of that. I think CBS jumped on the Michelle Yeoh bandwagon because of her Oscar win. It seems like when Disney does another ****** Star Wars show, CBS has to match it with an equally ****** Star Trek show. At some point it's got to be like George Carlin's joke about Richard Pryor: "Richard Pryor had a heart attack, I had a heart attack. Richard Pryor had another heart attack.....I had another heart attack! Richard Pryor set himself on fire, and I said "**** that!" so I had another heart attack!". Something's got to give.

Ahem…

That’s a very low-bar of quality that SNW is being held to…
The problem with SNW (as I see it) is they're trying to emulate the original series, but in doing so, they're mainly emulating the goofier aspects of the show. The show was made in the 1960s, when writing, acting, and esthetics were all different. It's why season one of TNG is widely considered the worst: they tried to copy the original series too much. It wasn't until they settled into their own style that it became great. And even that series doesn't always hold up when you look back on it - there's nitpicks to be made, cultural differences and scientific advancements that are different now than then.
With Discovery, they tried too hard to make it like the popular genre shows of the time (Game of Thones especially). SNW did an about face and tries to make something that looks and sounds like TOS, but with a modern sheen. It largely fails at that, for me. They can't capture the fundamental story and characters of the original. They also can't resist interjecting more modern dialog and interactions, while still attempting to emulate the 1960s show. So instead of creating something more timeless, it becomes immediately dated.

"It’s not just bad Trek, it’s bad film. It’s a train wreck where the train is carrying a load of Cybertrucks. It’s like what would happen if Michael Bay threw up Zack Snyder."

Yeah, I think the Trek franchise has finally reached the inevitable “depths” reached previously by “The Acolyte” in the race to the bottom…

The problem bashing that is that S3 hasn't aired so we don't know the context or if the episode is any good. Hard to look at that and feel positive, but still.

Sometimes, you can just recognize dog poo without having to get close enough to smell it and touch it, in order to know for certain that it is what it appears to be….

Making the philosophy of logic a “genetic characteristic that just comes with being Vulcan” demonstrates the continued fundamental ignorance of the writers of SNW that we have come to know so well.
