Star Trek Section 31 Reviews Are Starting to Roll In...

I watched it last night.

1st. I don't care about reviews (any, not just trek), didn't read/watch them and I won't. I couldn't care less about what some one I don't know Thinks about a show/movie/book.

2nd. Section 31 was far from cinematic perfection, It has issues. It moves kind of clunky/forced at first and some of the production decisions were odd. Character development was weak at times, but kind of came together by the end.

However it wasn't all bad and had some good moments. Overall I don't think it was a waisted hour and a half.

Much better than so much of the other drivel on TV and in the theaters, it was actually not bad.

As Trek it's better than some and worse than most but has potential.

One last thought, Based on what we have seen of section 31 in the earlier Treks these guys are a kind of plain. I hope if we see a series
They take it up a notch.

This movie is dreadful in my opinion. It was trying to be so many things and kind of reminded me of the total mess the first two seasons of Picard were. It had a juvenile humour that's been done to death and done much better elsewhere. It all seemed so rushed and the actors kind of cliche with phoned in performances.

Section 31 had an opportunity to carve out its own niche but threw itself down the toilet and I couldn't wait to flush. Can't say a lot without risk of spoilers but there's not a lot to say anyway. I wasn't expecting to see a clone of the good trek that's gone before, but I did expect to find something to connect me to the franchise and sadly i did not find that. There is no Trek here and I think if this movie wasn't part to any franchise....it would bomb itself out of existence on it's own merits or lack of.

I know JJ's Trek gets bad press by a lot of you, but at least I felt the characters were a good representation of who they were meant to be and they were entertaining movies that I can relate to as feeling like Star Trek...this abomination is where all your pitchforks and disdain should go.

I hope anyone reading this doesn't see this as an attack on their opinion if they like the movie, I grew up with TOS and enjoyed other Trek (well not Discovery, I mean what damn Star fleet captain cries every damn episode!) but for me, Section 31 just isn't part of the Star Trek Universe.

saw it last night and yea it's not great.

From my POV:

  1. the tone was too silly and tongue and cheek. For something dealing with section 31, I was hoping for a serious spy thriller with heavy drama.
  2. The characters weren't likable and did too much to be "personable" it got annoying.

I could list more, but high level it was just cheesy and felt like a made for tv movie, which it was. Not something i'd ever see again.

"Star Trek" used to be an intellectual pursuit, with some action scattered here and there. Now, they jump straight to action set pieces.

Think of Star Trek 2/The Wrath of Khan, versus the JJ Abrams "Into Darkness", which tried to retell the story. With Khan and Spock in hand-to-hand combat. On a speeder. Through San Francisco.

“Into Darkness” was a full-on assault, raining down blows of stupidity onto my brain…

What’s ‘star trek’ about it though? Nothing thought provoking about it. It’s as if Suicide Squad had a kid with Guardians of the Galaxy, and inherited the worst aspects of each parent. Got about 15 minutes left to watch which I’ll get around d to I guess sometime, but not in a rush to

Tapped out after about 20 min. My time is far too valuable to waster on this utter dreck! I rather do something far more enjoyable like laundry, or watch some paint dry.

I’m about 40 mins in

WHAT AM I WATCHING!?

I hate complaining about movies… but this is mind blowing bad…

Who made Picard season 3?! What’s he doing? Cuz pay him a buttload of cash and show whoever made this, the door.

That guy has gone to Marvel to make the Vision TV series.
No way Klutzman wants Terry back. Not that I really think Terry is the man for the job either, it seems Picard season 3 was just Easter eggs and fan service, but I suppose by comparison to the Kurtzman stuff it was a step up.

Star Trek should just have a 10 year break, let all the negative association fade away and start again with some creatives who REALLY do like and appreciate Star Trek and not just throw in the buzzwords during interviews and cash a paycheck.

The “Mechanical Future-Man” character is threatening the possibility of more Section 31 movies via the (shill?) channel, Trek Culture.

“If we end up making ten of these…”

Their take on the “death” of Star Trek is interesting…

The problem with SNW (as I see it) is they're trying to emulate the original series, but in doing so, they're mainly emulating the goofier aspects of the show. The show was made in the 1960s, when writing, acting, and esthetics were all different. It's why season one of TNG is widely considered the worst: they tried to copy the original series too much. It wasn't until they settled into their own style that it became great. And even that series doesn't always hold up when you look back on it - there's nitpicks to be made, cultural differences and scientific advancements that are different now than then.
With Discovery, they tried too hard to make it like the popular genre shows of the time (Game of Thones especially). SNW did an about face and tries to make something that looks and sounds like TOS, but with a modern sheen. It largely fails at that, for me. They can't capture the fundamental story and characters of the original. They also can't resist interjecting more modern dialog and interactions, while still attempting to emulate the 1960s show. So instead of creating something more timeless, it becomes immediately dated.
The main problem with season one of TNG was Roddenberry. He was running things...into the ground.

All of his self-destructive behaviors caught up with him.
