So Cal Prop Party!! PICS START ON PAGE 33!!!!

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

I'm a little surprised at the reaction too. I've talked to Brian at PIH and they aren't even interested in replicas nor do they even want to film any. I think you guys have this picture of evil PIH running around with cameras in everyone's face taking pictures, notes, names and trying to buy everything....well there's nothing forcing anyone to sell anything to them. They may "ask" but does anyone have a problem with saying "no thank you" ? I've been to a filming and they usually sit off in a corner somewhere interviewing people with their permission when they are holding their auction and cameras are fixed on the bidding crowds for reactions. I thought this might be fun but if everyone doesn't want them there then they won't be there. Also keep in mind they may not even want to go so until anything is definite I feel everyone should voice their concerns to either Brad or myself and see what we want to do.

Ceric,

The only person that will have to decide weather to go or not to go is YOU. I feel your going to do whatever you want regardless of what anyone here says and if you show up, of course you will be welcome. I think these guys are just being honestly concerned because of your age plus the distance and cost. Your age alone is going to put alot of obstacles in your path so give it alot of thought before you go traveling so far.

Tymer, behind the sarcastic and fake-mean-spirited comments, they did have a point about how my money could be better used. As I said, I finally got myself a new MP3 player for at the gym and took care of all my D*Con expenses so I don't have to worry about that this fall.

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

For those of us that are old and naive and not well versed in the universe and all.......who is Profiles In History? Is it a TV show? Website? Why would they want to buy everyone's props?

I would be more apt to say DON'T sell your props because that is where the illegal activity would lie. Just because we make replica props for our collections doesn't necessarily mean it is illegal. It is only when money transfers in plain view does the act of selling copyright material illegal.

If PIH is going to blow the entire Prop Party out of the water and give it more exposure that could be both good and bad. Good for popularity of the props and the makers and bad if we want to keep it a small and quaint little gathering albeit it is sounding like it is going to be a "party of all parties!"

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

Profiles in History is an auction house that sells screen-used/production/ questionable screen-used props from movies and sometimes tv shows...They are one of the well-known ones....

They have a tv show called Hollywood Treasure on SYFY channel that follows their crew around searching for screen-used props and they try to convince the owner to sell through their auction.....

They are definitely not into Replicas.....basically, their sole purpose of being there is making new connections and getting leads or possibly trying to consign....

basically, see no point of them going...they will be there for different purposes...and may get in the way of things...

Capn Jack,

Let me alleviate some of your concerns since I have talked to them personally:

1ST...Their first concern is they aboslutely do not want to be associated with "replicas" since they sell REAL props. I assured them that although this is alot of RPF guys having a prop party that we are not representing the RPF in any way shape or form....its not like we are going to have banners hanging everywhere waving the RPF flag. We are just a bunch of guys getting together for the same interests. They have no interest in replicas whatsoever.

2ND... They are interested in meeting owners of screen used props...which is their main incentive of even going to the party. That and they are always looking for interesting things to add to their TV show which is now in their 2nd season.

3RD...They do not BUY props...they auction/sell screen used props for consignors.

4TH... They are not going to take over the party...most likely they will be off in some corner of the room interviewing people who don't mind being interviewed. They MAY scan thru the room but I don't see them with cameras shoved in everyone's faces.

5TH...If this is going to cause a big problem and make everyone uncomfortable then they won't be there.....they may not even want to come...this isn't something definite.

You lubbers aren't speaking Jack's language...

Charles - PIH is the EITC of the prop community.

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

I think I gotta agree with Michael on this one...

This thing has kind of spiraled.

What started as a tradition of local prop enthusiasts gathering together to share has seemingly taken on a mantle of being almost a "mini-con", somehow erroneously construed as worthy of a multiple-hundred dollar investment entailing interstate travel, branching from a simple prop party to full-fledged, costume-sporting miniature convention, now repleat with (possibly) representatives of professionals within the prop collecting industry.

And I do agree that the presence (however low-profile) of PIH does (may?) modify the atmosphere, or "culture", if you will, of a prop party.

Another thing to consider - how many of us have screen-used props worthy of the attention of PIH?

About 1/10 of my collection is screen-used (10-15 pieces at most). Only TWO of those would be really intriguing to an entity like PIH. ONE of those I bought from PIH. The other? I would never sell it. I would never transport it for fear of loss or damage.

I would imagine similar numbers and sentiments apply to most of us.

I'm sorry to be a wet blanket; just being honest and objective.

I dunno, maybe I'm old-fashioned or resistant to growth and change, but I suppose I prefer "smaller and cozier" gatherings. I guess that is what Plan B is for!

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

Jeezum Crow
Way to suck the fun and life out of the prop party
If it's not "poor me, nobody likes me" it's "outsiders aren't welcome"

Why can't we just friggin' get together, show our stuff, have a few drinks, and have a good time?
What the hell is the problem with that?
:angry

Interesting discussion about Profiles in History. If they're interested in coming by for a pint and some lively discussion, I don't see why not; but if they're coming to just drum up business and broker screen used items on a tight schedule I'd say the easier thing all around would be to have one guy come with a stack of business cards and the full production staff can approach members (or the other way around) another time.

If the full PIH camera crew comes by and isn't interested in fakes, I guess I should skip the fake Bond BMW with the missiles in the sunroof and bring out the screen used "Evil Herbie" Horace the Hate Bug instead?

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

I don't have DEEP concerns about participants regardless of where they come from.... I was just curious to get the other side of the story regarding PIH. I went to their website and they seem to be a For Sale/Auction group. Now that I know this I agree that they don't seem suitable for a "REPLICA" gathering. I for one do not own any screen used pieces. I merely replicate things.

@Rob! Well we do know the demise of the EITC so perhaps it would spell doom for PIH? I keed!

The production crew isn't interested in FILMING replicas even though there were exceptions like BobbyC's Batmobile and the BTTF Deloreon because they were interesting enough and made for good TV. They are not going to come by and hand out cards or do you think that no one here couldn't find their office phone number? Your cars would most likely be in that category.....assuming you'd want them interviewing you and assuming they ask you. But lets face it, bottom line they are looking for consignors but they do want to see something interesting enough for their TV show to keep it on the air, that's why I came up with this idea because I thought you guys would like it. So far I'm not too sure. Also no one is forced to consign anything to them.

This is getting lame.

I'm not sure if I'm going now.

Can we nuke this thread and start over?

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

Not lame....just clarification. This event should be low key and relaxing. Hopefully not filled with business transactions and dirty dealings in darkened corners!

LOL!!! The more I read this response the more elaborate the picture in my head becomes. I just have this image of random people hunched on the ground or in corners trying to cover themselves with jedi cloaks etc while passing around replicas and everyone has really shadowed features because they never see the light of day and in the middle of it all is PIH camera crew filming us like some form of documentary while trying to smuggle someones prop.

I know this is not the case obviously.....it just sort of popped into my head after reading "dirty dealings in darkened corners" hahhaha.

Also I'm not trying to say that PIH is going to steal anyones items.....it was literally just a silly image that came to mind.

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

But of course, that's all just histrionics.

It's just bunch of folks getting together to chat for six hours and show off some stuff if you got anything cool in the last year.

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

True. That's what I meant.

Low-key and relaxing for sure!

I really need to finish some new pieces before then.
Of course they will be Aliens stuff....

Re: So Cal Prop Party!! SET FOR MARCH 6th 2011 **SEE 1st POST**

So since there is a lot of members here that aren't comfortable with PIH attending, I am going to say that thanks but no thanks.

I really appreciate Dennis' comittment and truly hard work but I want this party to enjoyable for everyone and not just a few. Thank you again Dennis.
