Sideshow Hellboy Samaritan - Take 2 (merged)

HEY! mine also changed to item shipping soon! And they charged my credit card as well!
Yay, I guess that must mean they slipped my into the first batch!

That does not sound promising.

Seriously, if there was a way for me to get back every penny that Sideshow have been keeping warm for me then I would cancel this in a minute. Does anyone know if this is possible? I mean 24hrs after an e-mail is just utter *****. I didn't even read it until 24 hrs after it had been delivered:angry After all the delays they should be giving everyone the chance to cancel and get every penny back.

I remember reading in one of their delay e-mails that this would be even better than anticipated, what with the delays and all. Well, the lack of wooden grip IMO makes it worse and if the first one delivered doesn't seem to be dropping jaws then they don't seem to have lived up to their claims.

This is the first thing that I have bought from Sideshow and I will never buy from them EVER again!

OK, here ya go...

Which is which?

Again, which is which?

You see, THAT'S the problem, and my biggest beef - this new one isn't any different than the first one... other than being 3 times heavier. Yeah, it's metal... but SO WHAT, if you're going to make it look like this.

It might look OK from 15 feet away, but up close the craptacular paint job is atrocious:

I was hoping to be wowed by this new one, but it was a big let down.

Fail.

Actually that weathering job is much much better than the one I used to have. I cant tell from the pictures you took but its seems to be better than your resin one too. I remember that on mine they had actually outlined the edges of the gun with silver. On this one at least it looks like the weathering was dry-brushed on. Its not a great dry-brush job. but its better than the solid line I got last time.

Do the grips come off? I'm thinking of repainting mine, re-weathering, and having someone make some good wooden grips for me (don't think I could do it myself).

I should be getting my metal one soon, and I'm excited, but I'll admit: I repainted my resin Samaritan within 1 day of getting it. Trivially easy paint job though: Black plastikote primer, silver and brass rub n buff. #0000 steel wool and a rag or two. Easy peasy. I plan to do the same with the metal one.
I masked off the handle, which is actually a pretty nice paint job, and sprayed everything else ultra flat black primer. 2 or 3 coats. Let it dry overnight, then hit it with the steel wool, buffs it up to a nice shine. Then squirt some rub n buff (most is silver, or aged silver, or pewter, your choice) onto a piece of paper, rub a rag into it, just to get a small amount on the rag (you want it to leave a silver smudge when you rub hard on something. That's how little you want on the rag) and hit the edges all over the gun with it.

Here's a pic:

of my completed Samaritan after painting. It's very very subtle. But that's what I wanted. I wanted it to sell to ME, and a paintjob for the screen would be much less subtle. For parts that were much more silver, like the hammer and the trigger, just put on more rub n buff, let it sit for a while and then buff.

Works like a charm.

Now see, that's what it's suppose to look like. And added the slotted screw to the hinge where the gun opens up. Nice! Why Sideshow didn't include that, I will never know. Always budded me with mine!

Any idea what color the base metal is? I'm thinking if it's already an aluminum/silver color, then just use some steel wool to wear the paint off at the edges.

Or, if it's a dark color, you can paint the gun aluminum, then put on some salt and then paint black over that. When the black is dry, rub off the salt and expose the aluminum underneath. I find salt weathering a much more realistic effect than painting weathering on top. And as a final layer, a coat of graphite powder for that used-blue look.

Of course, all of this is a moot point for me, as SideShow has yet to respond to the email I sent them a couple of days ago.

Is yours the exclusive as well?

Yes, it is.

Seems to be pretty hard to distinguish between those two from a few feet away. But the heavy feel is what I am looking for in a gun replica, so to me that´s what makes it more interesting than the first one.

Maybe the very dull finish is what´s making it look so toy-ish ?

Geez, the woman´s going to be really p****d if that one´s not looking good on the book shelf :lol

Beautiful! Nice job! I might have to give that a try...

Thanks for the comparison images, D48thRonin.
I was also hoping for more of a difference between the two.

That's a definite improvement, Adam. That's a concept that the Chinese factory workers seem to have missed - subtlety in weathering.

And please dish on the screw through the hinge point - that was something that I had also considered at one point. Did you completely replace that (if so, how?), or is it merely cosmetic?
