Shiniest gun in the Verse! Mal Reynolds pistol. WIP.

After putting this project on hold for far to long, I came across a post of someone building Mals gun on the cheap. This inspired me to pull out my old file and start working on mine once again. I started with a line drawing of the gun. I posted it some time ago in another thread. I separated all of the pieces that I needed to start and printed them out. Once I had decided on the thickness I needed for different parts, I used spray glue to stick my print outs to MDF and started cutting. Right now I'm still in the shaping stage. Getting the curves on these pieces right has been the biggest challenge so far!

I'm having trouble finding the knurled thumb screws that are just under the barrel of the pistol. Anyone know where the best place to pick those up would be? Looking on Amazon, they seem to only come in lots of 50 or more.

I know what you mean. It is hard to tell if it is what you need unless you see it in person.

Exactly, and since I am on a deadline (one of the three guns I make is for a friend before he moves) I dont want to get bitten by a long shipping time.

Updates! I went out to the shop last night around 7 and ended up staying until about 4 in the morning. I am tired today, but a lot of progress has been made! I shaped out the rest of the main body pieces and made the barrel. So fat everything but the barrel tube and the grips are made from MDF. the barrel tube is a short piece of steel half in tube. and the grips are being made from black walnut. Having a rotary tool has been a saving grace on this build. I've used it on almost every part of the build so far. Let me know what you guys think!

That MDF barrel is disgusting - and by disgusting I mean I'm jealous because I don't understand how the hell you made it out of MDF. How the hell did you do that?
MDF seems to be my favorite material I've never used. I don't even know where to get MDF. I've seen some at Lowe's and Home Depot, but the grain seems a lot heavier than what I've seen here in the RPF, and they also don't sell it in a wide variety of thicknesses. The best craft-friendly wood I can get from Lowe's or Home Depot is poplar.

I picked up the MDF at Home Depot, usually in a back corner somewhere they sell small sheets, 24x 24. The barrel is 3/4 inch, then I marked my lines down the side, drilled the hole and got to sanding. There will be a rough grain on some sides, but that was fixed with a couple coats of primer and even more sanding! My suggestion is to glue sandpaper to a small block of smooth wood. Helps keep the sides straight. Use a rough grit and go slow. I mean really slow. Also use a sanding head on a rotary tool to get the bulk of the sanding done quick, then finish by hand.

Thanks! Its just a matter of taking it slow and being careful. I worked at the edge of the table so I could pull the sanding block at a downward angle. It worked quite well.

See, those bevels look like you cut them with a table saw. They don't look like you sanded them by hand.
 
Made a lot of progress this weekend. I shaped the grips to where I like them, made the clip, started adding detail, and so far I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

I'm so glad to finally get this build going as it is my first replica prop!

Pistol looks great, especially for your first prop replica. Mine was a lightsaber built out of a pool thermometer :lol
