Hello. My name is Jonah Burgess. My father, Rance, owned this laser before Petaline killed him. Here is its story...
The laser was made by the prop company Modern Props from San Fernando CA. The company closed in early 2020. They were one of the leading prop rental houses in the Hollywood area. While their website is long gone, there is still an old facebook page (facebook.com/Modernprops/photos) with photos, including this laser.
Modern Props actually made five of these lasers sometime around the year 2000. They were called Intimidator. They had a catalog number of 120-2210. The 120 was the department for hand props, category number 2210 was the hand device Intimidator. Each laser was stamped on the beveled slope at the bottom of the frame with the full catalog number followed by the sequence number 1 through 5.
I am the current owner of lasers number 4 AND number 5. Laser #4 was sold on July 1, 2016 at the Profiles in History auction. It was advertised as the screen used laser. On December 18, 2019, laser number 5 came up for auction at Profiles in History. The number 5 unit was also listed as screen used. However, #5 also had with it a reprinted copy of the rental agreement for use on Firefly, as well as an inventory history for #5 showing it was used for Firefly in December of 2002, several rentals to a company called Three Strikes Prod LLC in 2004, and a three week rental to ABC Studios for use on Nathan Fillion's show Castle (as seen in season 6, episode 4, Number One Fan).
Both lasers came in the same type of heavy plastic case with custom cut foam padding and extra mini-disks.
Note in the pictures how the base of the laser frame, under the pop open mini-disk door, is thicker on #4 than it is on #5. Look carefully at the youtube video in the first post and you will see the difference between the still photos and the live video.
I never knew my father, but I've been told he was a bad man. Please don't follow in his footsteps. Be kind.
