Sherlock Coat opinions/info?

I suspect I'm the only person left here still searching for fabric.
Finally got a swatch of that Darkage Wool I posted earlier, which isn't great but certainly more in the spirit than boring old herringbone.
Too bad the swatch is so transparent when held up to the light. Wouldn't be so great as a winter coat then, right?

The Lark, if it makes you feel any better-the real coat isn't all that warm when the winds are blowing. Though I must admit, I can't see my hand when I hold it up to the light. What will you do with your coat once it is made. I've been tempted to make the trek to Baker St, but feared I'd look a ________(Fill in your own word)

I never can understand how people can be anit-fur but will wear leather. Both are animal skins, but that is a subject for another forum.

I think it has something to do with why the animal was killed. Fur: For their fur. Leather: for meat, hey let's use this skin for something.

TheLark, you have to think, you'll also be adding lining and interfacing. It's the same with most tweed, the Doctor Who Shetland Tweed for example, is also quite transclusive on it's own. But the fabric DOES still look quite thin for an overcoat, but maybe you could add 2 layers of it or something, though that'd be quite expensive as it'd require twice as much fabric.

That fabric is only 7 pounds per metre, so I could afford to get twice as much. I wonder how that would affect the way it hangs though.

An alternative would be this black and grey houndstooth harris tweed, which is 19/20 oz weight but more expensive at 32 pounds per single width (30") metre. It's a bit more like jessamygriffin's wool. Do you think you'd need single width or double width to cut out a coat pattern?

Its so hard to make decisions.

It looks like there's too much grey in the fabric. So when seen from a far, it'd be more grey than the blackish color of the real one.

I know this thread is for the coat, but I just purchased the Moriarty Alexander Mcqueen tie. If you all want I can post pics here when I get it.

This might be a little late since it seems everyone on the thread now is making their own coats (which is awesome! the fabrics look great!), but I own the wool version of the Cosplaysky coat posted on page one.

It's a great coat! They do a very nice job of measuring it out (as a short woman I am not at all the right proportions to wear the original design of the coat, but they managed to make it work!), and the material is thick.
It feels absolutely incredible on- I wear it out all the time! :)
The collar is also nice and stiff for all your collar popping needs.

Hey Misswolverine, could you show us some pics of the coat fabric close up?
I might just contact cosplaysky and abby workshop to try and get their coat wool by the metre. I'm buggered if I can find anything else that looks right, and I've emailed fabric shops and tweed sellers all over England, Ireland, Scotland and numerous other countries.

I keep getting so many questions about this, I thought I would share with the group. Here is a look at the back spread open and a close up of the buttons:

It took me about 1 hour to get Photobucket to show these photos right-side up :(

Hope they help.
This just in: A person named Amanda Johnson is considering having these Milford buttons reproduced exactly, She will need at least 10 people to show interest. She already makes this coat as a Reproduction (eBay, I think) and later found my info on this site after having similar buttons made.

If you would be interested in 1 or more sets of these buttons, you should contact Amanda at newneringa@yahoo.com and let her know. I think there is a minimum bulk order for her, so she needs to know how much interest there is. You can tell her that you heard it from me on the RPF, if you like.

Thanks RayR. Email sent.

One interesting I've noticed with all these made-to-order replica coats is that they never get the back pleats quite right. The pleats folds run up well past the rear belt along the sides, but other people always end them at the belt instead. The folds usually aren't severe enough either.

To be very clear, the back is in 2 pieces with a horizontal seam behind the belt. The pleats stop about 1" or so below and above that seam. But you can't tell this by looking without close inspection. The top and bottom pleats appear to be one long continuous line. And yes, the folds are quite severe and permanent all the way to the bottom. Hope this helps.

Ahhh Unfortunately I'm down in San Diego for the summer and my coat is up in Berkeley where I go to school. I have a few pictures of me in it, though, and I'll see if any get a good view of the material.

I will say it's pretty nice stuff. Heavy but not too heavy, and quite smooth.

Here's what I've got- sorry I don't have more to show you. :( These were taken from my phone so they're not great quality, but hopefully it helps. I tried to take some of the details from various photos I have and compile them, plus to show the fabric in a few different lights.

Hm, looks nice, there are some issues though, the button's are quite bright, and it looks like the back-pleats stop at the belt, whereas they should go up much further. But otherwise, that certainly is a VERY nice replica.

Yeah- I mean it's certainly not perfect but it feels really nice on and any minor details that are off are not noticable unless you're really combing over it. Real fun to run abouts in, anyways. haha :)

hahaha thank you. :)

I'm actually teaching a course on the Sherlock Holmes stories and the BBC series (basically about Sherlock Holmes and modernity) at UC Berkeley in the fall- I'm really excited to wear the coat to class. :D

I look forward to seeing updates on everyone making their own coats!! I wish I had the sewing skill to pull something like that off.
